Naimisharanya is a sacred forest mentioned in Puranic Literature. It was in Naimisharanya where puranas had been narrated for the first time.
The Ancient Naimisharanya forest corresponds to modern day Nimshar situated along the Gomti (Gomathi) river in Sitapur District of Uttarpradesh.

Lalitha Devi Temple
Lalita Devi is the presiding deity of Naimisharanya. The temple is an ancient shrine and as per the legends or various Puraanas when Devi Sati burnt herself in the Yogi Agni after Daksha Yajna, Shiva carried her body on his shoulder and started performing Shiv Tandav. Due to which the creation of universe was affected and so Lord Vishnu divided Devi Sati’s body into 108 parts. It is believed that the heart of Devi Sati is present in Naimisharanya and is one of the Shakti Peeth’s Known as Lalita Devi. As per another folklore it is also believed that by Lord Brahma’s order Lalita Devi appeared here for the destructions of Asurs in Devasur Sangram. The temple is a beautiful cantilevered, multi-limbed divinity over entrance flanked by elephant statues.
Chakrathirth
Legend has it that the consequences of an imminent Kalyug drove many sages to Brahma to seek refuge. He rolled his Chakra (wheel) across Earth and told them to follow it till it rests; it is believed that Chakratirth is the place where Lord Brahma’s wheel cracked through the Earth developing a large source of water. However, due to high flow of water the saints then requested Lord Brahma to help them. On Lord Brahma’s request then arrived Goddess Lalita Devi who re-established the Chakra (Wheel) and controlled the flow. This formed a kund (pond) here, known as Chakra Kund. Today, this spot is surrounded by a promenade dotted with shrines honouring many Hindu deities.

Bareilly is a city in Bareilly district in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Located on the Ramganga, it is the capital of Bareilly division and the geographical region of Rohilkhand. The city is 252 kilometres (157 mi) north of the state capital, Lucknow, and 250 kilometres (155 mi) east of the national capital, New Delhi. Bareilly is the fourth city in Uttar Pradesh with compressed natural gas (CNG) filling stations (after Lucknow, Kanpur and Agra). It is the seventh-largest metropolis in Uttar Pradesh and the 50th-largest city in India.[citation needed] Bareilly also figured amongst the PM Narendra Modi's ambitious 100 Smart City list in India.
The city is also known by the name Nath Nagri (known for the four Shiva temples located in four corners of the region - Dhopeshwar Nath, Madni Nath, Alakha Nath and Trivati Nath), Ala Hazrat,Shah Sharafat Miyan and Khankahe Niyazia (derived the famous Muslim Mausoleum), Zari nagari and historically as Sanjashya (where the Buddha descended from Tushita to earth). The city is a centre for furniture manufacturing and trade in cotton, cereal and sugar. Its status grew with its inclusion in the counter magnets list of the National Capital Region (NCR), a list also including Hissar, Patiala, Kota and Gwalior.[3] The city is also known as Bans-Bareilly. Although Bareilly is a production centre for cane (bans) furniture, Bans Bareilly is not derived from the bans market; it was named for two princes: Bansaldev and Baraldev, sons of Jagat Singh Katehriya, who founded the city in 1537. Bareilly's 2011 population was 898,167
Bareilly has been connected to the rest of India by rail since the 19th century, and a 1909 map shows that Bareilly was a railway junction during the early 20th century. Six rail lines intersect in the city. In 1890 the Bengal and North Western Railway leased the Tirhoot State Railway to increase the latter's revenue, and the Lucknow-Sitapur-Seramow Provincial State Railway merged with the Bareilly-Pilibheet Provincial State Railway to form the Lucknow-Bareilly Railway on 1 January 1891. The Lucknow-Bareilly Railway was owned by the Government of India, and operated by the Rohilkund and Kumaon Railway.
The Oudh and Tirhut Railway was formed on 1 January 1943 by the merger of the Bengal and North Western Railway, the Tirhut Railway (BNW operated), the Mashrak-Thawe Extension Railway (BNW operated), the Rohilkund and Kumaon Railway and the Lucknow-Bareilly Railway (R&K operated). The Oudh and Tirhut Railway was later renamed the Oudh Tirhut Railway; it merged with the Assam Railway and the Kanpur-Achnera section of the Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway to form North Eastern Railway (headquartered in Gorakhpur, with a divisional headquarters in Izzatnagar), one of the 16 zones of the Indian Railways

Bareilly is on the Moradabad-Lucknow route. Trains from the north (including Jammu Tawi and Amritsar) and Delhi running east and northeast (to Gorakhpur, Barauni, Howrah, Guwahati and Dibrugarh) pass through Bareilly, and the city is also on the route from Uttarakhand to Kasganj and Mathura. Many trains to railway stations in Uttarakhand pass through Bareilly.

Sitapur is a city and a municipal board in Sitapur district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. It is in the Lucknow Division. The town is located on the banks of river Sarayan, halfway between Lucknow and Shahjahanpur and is well connected to state capital Lucknow by the National Highway No. 24. In British India, it was spelled as Citapore and was a cantonment, garrisoned by a portion of a British regiment. The traditional origin for the name is said to be by the King Vikramāditya from Lord Ram's wife Sita.
Rail Network
The district is traversed by broad gauge train network connecting Gorakhpur and Delhi via Gonda, Burhwal, bypassing Lucknow and Hardoi. The major towns of the district Sidhauli, Mishrikh, Maholi, Hargaon, Biswan, Mahmudabad etc.are well connected with rails. Tamabur-Ahmedabad is not connected with rails. Broad Gauge conversion from Lucknow to Sitapur is in progress.

बाबा देवेश्वर धाम नैमिषारण्य
जिस प्रकार मानव-शरीर में मस्तिष्क अपने गुणों के कारण विशिष्ट महत्व रखता है, उसी प्रकार पृथ्वी पर अवस्थित कुछ विशेष स्थान अपनी विशिष्टता के कारण पवित्र माने जाते हैं कि, ये स्थान जनमानस में 'तीर्थ' या 'पावन धाम' के रूप में समादृत हैं। पवित्र नदियों के तट पर स्थित ये तीर्थ कभी ऋषि-मुनियों की तपस्या और आराधना के केन्द्र हुआ करते थे क्योंकि वनों की हरीतिमा और शुद्ध वातावरण आध्यात्मिक अन्वेषकों के लिये अनुकूल होता था। इसके साथ ही सुख-शान्ति-प्रदायक ये तीर्थ केन्द्र श्रद्धालुजनों को भी आकर्षित करते थे।
कहा जाता है कि शौनक आदि ऋषियों को सूत जी ने अट्ठारह पुराणों की कथा और मर्म का यही उपदेश दिया था। द्वापर में श्री कृष्ण के भाई बलराम भी यहाँ आए थे और यज्ञ किया था। प्राचीनकाल में इस सुरम्य स्थल का वृहद् भू-भाग वनाच्छादित था। शान्त और मनोरम वातावरण के कारण यह अध्ययन, मनन और ज्ञानार्जन हेतु एक आदर्श स्थान है।
यज्ञवाटश्व सुमहान् गोमत्या नैमिषे वने ।
आज्ञाप्यतां महाबाहो तद्धि पुण्यमनुत्तमम् ।।

प्राचीन और घर-घर में प्रचलित श्री सत्यनारायण भगवान की कथा का प्रवर्तन नैमिषारण्य की पावन धरा से ही हुआ, जिसका प्रारम्भ नैमिषारण्य के उल्लेख के साथ होता है-
एकदा नैमिषारण्ये ऋषय: शौनकादय: ।
प्रपच्छुर्मुनय: सर्वे सूतं पौराणिकं खलु ।।
एक बार भगवान विष्णु एवं देवताओं के परम पुण्यमय क्षेत्र नैमिषारण्य में शौनक आदि ऋषियों ने भगवत्-प्राप्ति की इच्छा से सहस्र वर्षो में पूरे होने वाले एक महान यज्ञ का अनुष्ठान किया।
-श्रीमद्भागवत महापुरण - प्रथम स्कन्ध
नैमिषारण्य का उल्लेख कूर्म पुराण में मिलता है, जिसमें इसे तीनों लोकों में प्रसिद्ध बताया गया है -
इदं त्रैलोक्य विख्यातं, तीर्थ नैमिषमुत्तमम् ।
महादेव प्रियकरं, महापातकनाशनम् ।।
जहाँ श्रीदेवीभागवत में नैमिषारण्य स्थित चक्रतीर्थ एवं पुष्कर को सर्वश्रेष्ठ तीर्थ कहा गया है, वहीं आस्थावानजन ऐसा विश्वास करते है कि बदरीनाथ व केदारनाथ धाम की यात्रा नैमिषारण्य की यात्रा के उपरान्त ही पूर्ण होती है।
श्रीरामचरितमानस में गोस्वामी तुलसीदास जी ने नैमिषारण्य का माहात्म्य-निदर्शन करते हुए तभी तो कहा है-
तीरथ वर नैमिष विख्याता ।
अति पुनीत साधक सिधि दाता ।।
ऐसे विशिष्ट माहात्म्य के कारण ही नैमिषारण्य को महिमामण्डित तीर्थ-स्थल के रूप में सर्वत्र मान्यता प्राप्त है। इसी कारण यहाँ प्रतिवर्ष बड़ी संख्या में दूर-दूर से श्रद्धालुजन दर्शनार्थ आते हैं। चक्रतीर्थ, भूतेश्वरनाथ मन्दिर, व्यासगद्दी, हवनकुण्ड, ललितादेवी का मन्दिर, पंचप्रयाग, शेष मन्दिर, क्षेमकाया मन्दिर, हनुमानगढ़ी, शिवाला-भैरव जी मन्दिर, पंच पाण्डव मन्दिर, पुराण मन्दिर माँ आनन्दमयी आश्रम, नारदानन्द सरस्वती आश्रम-देवपुरी मन्दिर, रामानुज कोट, अहोबिल मठ, परमहंस गौड़ीय मठ आदि के साथ ही लगभग 10 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर स्थित मिश्रिख व दधीचिकुण्ड तथा 12 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर स्थित हत्याहरण तीर्थ नैमिषारण्य के प्रमुख आकर्षण है।
ब्रहमा के चक्र की नेमि के शीर्ण होने से वह मुनि-पूजित वन नैमिष नाम से विख्यात हुआ।
तभी से नैमिषारण्य ऋषियों की तपस्या के योग्य स्थान बन गया।
आधुनिक सभ्यता के विकास के साथ ये तीर्थस्थल आध्यात्मिकता के साथ-साथ व्यावसायिक गतिविधियों से जुड़ गए लेकिन उनकी मूल आस्था निरन्तर बनी रही है।
ऐसा ही एक तीर्थस्थल उत्तर प्रदेश के सीतापुर जनपद में नैमिषारण्य है, जिसकी महिमा पुराणों में वर्णित है। कहा जाता है कि शौनक ऋषि ज्ञान की पिपासा शान्त करने के लिए ब्रहमा जी के पास गए। ब्रहमा जी ने उन्हें एक चक्र दिया और कहा कि इसे चलाते हुए चले जाओ। जहाँ चक्र की नेमि (बाहरी परिधि) गिरे, उसे पवित्र स्थान समझकर- वहाँ आश्रम स्थापित कर लोगों को ज्ञानार्जन कराओ। शौनक ऋषि के साथ कई अन्य ऋषिजन इसी प्रयोजन से चले।
अन्तत: गोमती नदी के तट पर चक्र की नेमि गिरी और भूमि में प्रवेश कर गयी। तभी से यह स्थल चक्रतीर्थ तथा नैमिषारण्य के नाम से विख्यात हुआ। जनश्रुति के अनुसार नैमिषारण्य का नाम 'निमिषा' का अपभ्रंश है, जिसका अर्थ होता नेत्र की आभा। वैदिक काल में यह तपस्थली एक प्रमुख शिक्षा-केन्द्र के रूप में विख्यात थी। पौराणिक मान्यतानुसार नैमिषारण्य 88000 ऋषि-मुनियों के तप-ज्ञानार्जन का केन्द्र था।
वाल्मीकि-रामायण में 'नैमिष' नाम से उल्लिखित इस स्थान के बारे में कहा गया है कि श्री राम ने गोमती नदी के तट पर अश्वमेध यज्ञ सम्पन्न किया था- 'ऋषियों के साथ लक्ष्मण को घोड़े की रक्षा के लिये नियुक्त करके रामचन्द्र जी सेना के साथ नैमिषारण्य के लिए प्रस्थित हुए।' महाभारत के अनुसार युधिष्ठिर और अर्जुन ने इस तीर्थ-स्थल की यात्रा की थी। 'आइने अकबरी' में भी इस स्थल का वर्णन मिलता है। हिन्दी साहित्य के गौरव महाकवि नरोत्तमदास की जन्म-स्थली (बाड़ी) भी नैमिषारण्य के समीप ही स्थित है।
