Kempten is the largest town of Allgäu, Germany. Kempten is considered the capital of the Allgäu region. With its 70,000 inhabitants, it is located in the foothills of the Alps on the Iller River in the Oberallgäu region. Kempten is the oldest urban settlement (town) in Germany.

Kempten / Deutschland. Kempten ist eine Stadt im Allgäu im Süden Deutschlands. Mit etwa 68.000 Einwohnern ist sie die größte Stadt im Landkreis Oberallgäu.
Die Stadt hat eine lange Geschichte, die bis in die Römerzeit zurückreicht. Kempten war damals ein wichtiger Handelsplatz und wurde später eine bedeutende Stadt im Mittelalter. Heute ist Kempten vor allem für seine schöne Altstadt bekannt. Hier gibt es viele historische Gebäude zu sehen, wie zum Beispiel das Rathaus, das St.-Mang-Kloster oder die Residenz. Die Residenz war einst der Sitz der Fürstäbte von Kempten und ist heute ein Museum. Auch die St. Lorenz Basilika ist einen Besuch wert. Die Kirche stammt aus dem 17. Jahrhundert und ist ein beeindruckendes Beispiel für den Barockstil.
Neben der Altstadt hat Kempten auch viele moderne Einrichtungen zu bieten. Es gibt zum Beispiel ein großes Einkaufszentrum und ein modernes Kongresszentrum. Die Stadt ist auch ein wichtiger Verkehrsknotenpunkt, da hier verschiedene Autobahnen und Bundesstraßen zusammenlaufen. Dadurch ist Kempten gut zu erreichen und ein idealer Ausgangspunkt für Ausflüge in die Umgebung.
Alles in allem ist Kempten eine vielseitige Stadt mit einer reichen Geschichte und vielen Freizeitmöglichkeiten. Besucher sollten auf jeden Fall die Altstadt besichtigen und die vielen Freizeitangebote nutzen. Kempten ist ein idealer Ort für einen erholsamen Urlaub oder einen Wochenendtrip.

Apart from Neuschwanstein, the Allgäu offers an incredible number of other beautiful places, many lakes and sights and is ideal for a trip with a RV due to the proximity of the travel destinations and the numerous campsites.
Probably the most famous travel destination in the Allgäu is the fairytale castle Neuschwanstein. But by no means the only sight worth seeing there. In addition to Neuschwanstein, numerous larger and smaller lakes in the middle of the Allgäu Alps enchant with grandiose views of the surrounding mountain landscape and beautiful nature.

Kempten | One of Germany's best kept towns
On my third day of my bavarian travel series, I visited Kempten, one of the more beautiful towns in Bavaria or should I say one of Germany's best kept towns. Travelling through Bavaria for the past two days was so enjoyable and Kempten wasn't to disappoint either. The weather was at its best, which made walking around so much more enjoyable. visiting the Evangelischer Friedhof, St. Magnus Church and the Basilica St. Lorenz were the highlights of my visit. I finished my day at the library and gardens, which were wonderful. I certainly saved the best until last. Kempten must be one of Germany's best kept towns.

Kempten (Allgäu) (Swabian Kempte?/i) is an independent town with over 70,000 inhabitants in the Allgäu in the Bavarian administrative region of Swabia. It is the upper, school and administrative center of the surrounding Allgäu economic, holiday and planning region with around 470,000 inhabitants. Kempten is the second largest city in the administrative district after Augsburg and is considered one of the oldest cities in Germany, as it was mentioned in a written document in ancient times. Since the 1930s, Kempten has been increasingly mentioned as an Allgäu town, but a Swabian dialect is spoken there rather than an Allgäu dialect, the latter can only be identified to a recognizable extent south of Immenstadt im Allgäu. Kempten is the southernmost independent city in Germany.
The cityscape is characterized by the centuries-long coexistence of two town centers: on the one hand the so-called collegiate town of the Prince Abbey of Kempten, on the other hand the imperial town of Kempten. The contrasting basic and outline structure, which can still be seen today, makes Kempten a twin city.
The Kempten University of Applied Sciences has been located in Kempten since 1977, with almost 6000 students enrolled, making it one of the largest universities of applied sciences in Bavaria.
The medium-sized town is located on the border area to the Austrian states of Tyrol and Vorarlberg.
Kempten is 646 m to 915 m above sea level. NHN on the northern edge of the Alps on the banks of the Iller, about 35 km north of Oberstdorf. The Bavarian state capital Munich is about 110 km away from Kempten, the administrative district capital Augsburg about 90 km. Suburbs and nearby towns of Kempten are Durach, Waltenhofen, Buchenberg, Wiggensbach, Lauben, Haldenwang, Wildpoldsried and Betzigau.
Of the German cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, Kempten is 672 m above sea level. NHN (old town) after Villingen-Schwenningen (704 m) the second highest.
The city's local mountain, the Mariaberg, is the highest point in the city at 915 m. Further scenic accents are set by narrow ridges and crests such as those of the Haubenschloss (759 m), the Reichelsberg, the Halde (700 m) in a north-south direction and the elevations of the Burghalde (690 m) and the Lenzfrieder Höhenridge (762 m) in an east-west direction. In the south, the Alps dominate the panorama.
The main river is the Iller; Erosion channels, streams and tributaries are the Rottach, Kollerbach, Bachtelbach, Durach and Leubas, Ursulasrieder Bach and other smaller, often unnamed streams. They feed the water from ridges and slopes into partly ravine-like incisions (Kalbsangsttobelbach) in the north-east or north-west flow direction of the Iller. The total length of the watercourses in Kempten is over 176 km, of which the Iller itself is only 13 km. The larger bodies of water in Kempten are Bachtelweiher, Herrenwieser Weiher, Schwabelsberger Weiher and Stadtweiher; smaller ones are the Steufzger Weiher and the pond in the Engelhaldepark. They are all artificially dammed, usually several hundred years ago.
From a natural spatial perspective, Kempten belongs to the pre-Alpine moor and hill country - more precisely to the Iller foothills natural area unit, which was also referred to in older literature as the Iller young moraine country.
From a structural geological point of view, the boundary between the folded rocks, which are counted on the northern edge of the Allgäu Alps, and the unfolded sediments of the Molasse Basin runs underground. .
