THE CITY OF KAVALA

Kavala is the second largest city in the northern Greece, the principal seaport of eastern Macedonia and the capital of Kavala prefecture. It is situated on the Bay of Kavala, across the island of Thassos.

I love this panoramic city, and ask Yianni to stop from time to time to take photos. The medieval castle in Kavala is situated at a hill above the town. Additionally the town's fortifications are still widely visible, especially in the costal front. Kavala is built amphitheatrically, with most residents enjoying superb views of the coast and sea.

It seems that it is going to rain though, and I try to take as many photos as possible. Me, Yianni and our children have the best memories from this beautiful city. We have spent about 4 months out here when the children were very small and my husband was working at a factory there. The city is much bigger now, but no matter what, it remains beautiful even better than those years. We have a long trip today, going back to Evia after spending 8 days on the Island of Thasos and this is the reason we set off quite early.

City Kavala Greece

Kavala este unul dintre cele mai atractive orase mari ale Greciei, este ca un amfiteatru care creste din portul frumos catre o imensa cetate bizantina. Construit pe vechiul oras Neopolis, populaţia oraşelor s-a dublat în 1922 când grecii din Asia Mică au sosit aici, în timpul schimbului de populaţii.
Piete spatioase, clădiri contemporane şi centre comerciale din partea de vest a oraşului creeaza un contrast plăcut cu casele traditionale vechi, grădinile mici şi aleile din partea de est. Portul este deosebit de pitoresc, cu nenumăratele sale barci de pescuit, viu colorate, ancorate de-a lungul tarmului.
Printre reperele oraşului sunt impresionante zidurile vechi, castelul bizantin şi Kamares - apeduct ridicat de Soliman Magnificul în secolul al 16-lea, casa lui Mehmet Ali (secolul 18) şi Imaret, o clădire turceasca.
Există multe locuri pentru cazare, hoteluri de orice categorie. Restaurantele sunt multe si excelente. Pentru plăcinte cu branza si cafea încercaţi Cafe George pe o stradă laterală de langa Eleftheriou Venizelou.
Dacă vă place să înotati şi să mancati peşte proaspăt, mergeti catre plajele minunate şi tavernele prietenoase, nu departe de oraş, in locuri cum ar fi Kalamitsa, Palio, Nea Iraklitsa, Raspani, Perigiali, şi Nea Peramos.

Philippi witnessed all of them. You can now visit the Archaeological Area, Museum and Theater on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The collection of the Kavala Tobacco Museum is exceptionally rich. It includes objects used to grow tobacco, machines used to process it commercially, photographs, rare documents documents of the Ottoman tobacco monopoly the Régie, statutes of associations, bank documents, etc.. It also contains books on tobacco, publications of the Greek Tobacco Organization, the archive of the Tobacco Merchants Association, private documents, tobacco maps and blueprints, the furniture of tobacco merchants, etc.
