The peninsula is notable for its olive oil and olive production. Also various types of wine are produced.
Tourism[edit]
Chalkidiki has been a popular summer tourist destination since the late 1950s when people from Thessaloniki started spending their summer holidays in the coastal villages. In the beginning tourists rented rooms in the houses of locals. By the 1960s, tourists from Austria and Germany started to visit Chalkidiki more frequently. Since the start of the big tourist boom in the 1970s, the whole region has been captured by tourism.[7] In the region there is a golf course and there is a plan for other four in the future.
Mining[edit]
Gold was mined in the region during antiquity by Philip II of Macedon and the next rulers. Since 2013, a revival of mining for gold and other minerals was underway with a number of concessions having been granted to Eldorado Gold of Canada. However, critics claim that mining would adversely affect tourism and the environment.[8]
Administration[edit]
The regional unit Chalkidiki is subdivided into five municipalities. These are (number as in the map in the infobox):[9]
Aristotelis (2)
Kassandra (4)
Nea Propontida (3)
Polygyros (1)
Sithonia (5)
Prefecture[edit]
As a part of the 2011 Kallikratis government reform, the regional unit Chalkidiki was created out of the former prefecture Chalkidiki (Greek: Νομός Χαλκιδικής). The prefecture had the same territory as the present regional unit. At the same time, the municipalities were reorganised, according to the table below.[9]

Bridge in Karyes Lakonias - October 2013

The Bridge in Karyes Lakonia in Greece was constructed back in 1886 by Italian stone masons and as the story goes the bridge was designed and constructed to cater for a proposed road that would be serving as a link between Athens and Sparta.
As this was to be a main road and in order to maintain a reasonably level road surface in line with the two side banks it was deemed necessary to construct a substantial bridge to cater for the anticipated traffic that would use such a bridge. A great amount of earth was carted by horse and cart and was placed on either side of the river to achieve the required levels and provide adequate structural support for the main bridge structure.
The construction of the bridge was undertaken by some of the best Italian stone masons and this beautifully detailed bridge structure was constructed.
Although the then proposed road link between Athens and Sparta never eventuated the bridge has served the village of Karyes and the other Parnona Villages very well for a period of over 116 years.
Through out this period no maintenance of the bridge has ever taken place.
Today the bridge has been extensively damaged, portion of the side walls has been demolished, large stones have been deliberately been removed from the main central support pillars as well as other damage to the bridge. The damaged and removed stones are laying on the side and the river bed bellow the bridge.
The damage seems to have been done intentionally. The demolition of the side rail walls on the South West corner of the bridge has also created damage to the existing water pipes that are located on the side of the bridge and water has been spilling out of the damaged pipes ever since the bridge vandalism.
Some of the locals in the village of Karyes indicate that the damage has been done a few years ago and despite notifying the council authorities no investigation has ever been carried out or any atempt to repair the bridge.
This bridge is the main connecting link for Karyes as well as a lot of the neighbouring villages of Mount Parnon the responsibility for the maintenance of the bridge we believe falls with the Council Dimos Spartis.
Hopefully someone in authority takes some action to carry out the necessary repairs before it becomes too late.

The harbour of Dafni, Mount Athos: up and running

When the daily boat with pilgrims arrives in Dafni it is a busy place. Here you can take the next boat to Kavsokalivia, the bus to Karyes or a taxi to other monasteries. This is filmed in sept. 2013. The strange thing is you see only men on the video, no women has ever been here.

A Look At The Monastery of St Stephen, Meteora, Greece

The Monastery of St. Stephen is an Eastern Orthodox monastery that is part of the Meteora monastery complex in Thessaly, central Greece. It is situated at the top of a rocky precipice. Kukulas peak 1600 feet which overlooks the monastery.

The Monastery of St. Stephen is located on a plateau-like structure. The original monastery was believed to have been built in the 14th century, however, a new katholikon was built in 1798 making it the newest of all the meteorite structures. The monastery is made up of many buildings including new katholikon, the hestia (kitchen), an old refectory that has since become a museum, and an assortment of rooms with different purposes. These include workrooms for paintings, embroidery, incense-making, and needlework. The church's interior was decorated with frescoes on the inside for a short period after 1545. However, During the World Wars, the monasteries were bombed heavily and ransacked in the belief that the monks were holding refugees. As of 2015, the Monastery of St. Stephen is home to 28 nuns after its conversion to a nunnery in 1961.

Holy Monastery Of Pantokrator (Ntaou) – Penteli | Greece

The holy and venerable Monastery Pantokrator Tao was founded in the 9th century as a monastery for men. During its long history, it has experienced both looting and destruction, but periods of efflorescence as well. During the early Byzantine era, in particular, it emerged as the second monastery in the Balkans, having a brotherhood in excess of 600 monks.
The most dramatic era in the history of the Monastery, however, was that between 1570 and 1680. In those difficult years, the Holy Monastery of Pantokrator was a spiritual cradle and source of national inspiration and social awakening not only for the much-suffering Greeks of Attica, but for the wider Greek world then suffering under the Turkish yoke.
