21 Things to do in Kaohsiung, Taiwan

These are my carefully selected 21 best things to do in Kaohsiung, the most underrated city in Asia. I included gems like Cijin Boulevard, Old Taiwan Restaurant, 85 Sky Tower, the ICE BOWL, chocolate chicken at Ruifeng Night Market and the Brickyard for the best nightlife of Kaohsiung. Subscribe to my channel ► for weekly videos!

I had no expectations before driving down to Kaohsiung. This massive city on the southern tip of Taiwan is a tropical paradise with tons of fun things to do, delicious foods to eat and mingle with its friendly locals. After you watch my video I guarantee you will put Kaohsiung on your bucket list.

Kaohsiung is best known for the Dragon & Tiger pagodas located at the Lotus pond north of downtown, the most facinating thing is the zigzag pathway which is meant to deflect evil. Do make sure to enter through the dragon's mouth first and exit through the tiger's mouth to obtain good fortune. Afterwards, treat yourself to a massive shaved ice dessert at the Ice Bowl located at Binhua 1st Road.

► 100+ photos, prices, discounts and extra tips

Kick off the next day with a typical southern Taiwanese breakfast at Dandan Hamburger, famous for it delicious soup burger combo. I stayed at the massive 85 Sky Tower hotel on the 61st floor with mesmerizing views of Kaohsiung.

Cijin Island is located in front of Kaohsiung harbor, the largest harbor of Taiwan at which you can rent an electric buggy and cruise along its beautiful boulevard while making selfie stops at the Rainbow Church, giant sea shell and end your adventure with a lunch at the Windmill Station Sushi Restaurant.

At the Windmill Station Restaurant make sure to order the gigantic chirashi bowl of assorted fish with high-grade uni, unagi and tuna. Make sure to top it off with Kaohsiung waffles! On the way back to the Cijin Ferry, make stops at the Cijin dried fish market, Cihou fort for the best skyline view of Kaohsiung and Mazu shrine.

During the evening take the subway to Formosa Boulevard Station to admire world's largest glass art installation consisting of 4500 glass panels.

For night markets check out Ruifeng Night Market located just north of downtown Kaohsiung where you must try the Gua Bao with juicy pork belly, chicken on a stick stuffed with sticky rice and bizarre chocolate chicken for the ultimate night market experience.

To really venture out, go to OLD TAIWAN restaurant which is a themed 1950's Taiwanese restaurant with incredibly local dishes. The dishes truly tasted like they were cooked with love by grandma Taiwan, a great delicious alternative to night markets.

Kaohsiung has a fun and vibrant nightlife, for an epic night out check out bars; Black Dog, an expat bar and Brickyard for their underground dance off parties, foosball tables, pool tables and great local atmosphere. The best nightclubs in town are Muse Kaohsiung and LAMP Disco which often hosts all-you-can-drink parties with a young local crowd. Not much English is spoken at these nightclubs so be aware.

In conclusion, Kaohsiung made it to my Top 5 list of favorite cities in Asia. Most likely due to not having any expectations and being blown away by the tropical climate, delicious local dishes, friendly locals and fantastic parties. Kaohsiung, I shall return in the near future!

Hua Lien is known for its majestic views and the best way to experience this is to paraglide over the valley

most people visit Taroko Gorge for good the plunging canyons flanked by marbled mountains. It’s essentially the Taiwanese Grand Canyon.

01:16 - Zhuilu Old Trail 錐麓古道
Zhui lu Old Trail was created by the indigenous people to connect their villages but today, it’s a slightly challenging walk. This trail allows you to have an amazing view of the canyon.

KEELUNG 基隆 - 01:51
A city full of ancient forts and colourful photo spots, Keelung is a charming port city in the northeastern part of Taiwan.

02:00 - Zhengbin Fishing Port 正濱漁港
This place has colourful houses and fishermen reeling in their loot for the day.

02:08 - Chaojing Park 潮境公園

FAQs
========================================
Q: How long did it take?
A: My trip was 14 days.

Q: Which airport should I arrive at?
A: Having travelled from the other side of the globe, I arrived at Taoyuan International Airport in Taipei. If travelling from Australia or Asia, there may be connecting flights to Kaohsiung International Airport on the south-west coast of Taiwan.

Q: How much did it cost?
A: You can see a cost breakdown of my trip at 12:37

Q: How did you pay for things or get local currency?
A: I just take money out from an ATM using my debit card. It has a small international transaction fee, but it’s minuscule if you only do it once or twice. You may be able to order foreign currency at better rates, but it’s not something I personally bothered with.

Q: Is it easy to find petrol stations?
A: Yes, you'll find one pretty much everywhere, including remote areas in the mountains! I always went with caution and ensured I had a full tank before entering remote areas, however to my shock, there were petrol stations, and even 7 Eleven stores in remote mountains! Just to be safe, I would highly recommend getting a full tank of petrol before going to the mountains.

Q: Which month did you go?
A: I visited mid November to early December and spent 14 days there.

Come discover Kaohsiung, we went to Southern Taiwan for the first time and in the port city of Kaohsiung and share the best things to in Kaohsiung. We had some amazing Taiwanese street food and went to one of their best night markets!

Taiwan’s busiest harbour. Located in southwestern Taiwan, this city boasts scenic seaside spots, magnificent mountain views, and a captivating culture. In our last video we began our journey in the harbour side of Kaohsiung, today we explore more of Kaohsiung by visiting Taiwan’s largest mall, Dream Mall and explore the famous Lotus Lake, where the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas are said to give visitors good luck. At the lake, honour the Goddess of Mercy and God of War, and marvel at the massive statue of the Mysterious Warrior, Xuan Wu. Round the day off with a jaunt to the Ruifeng night market Kaohsiung. When we arrived in Taiwan and did a search on what to see and do - the number one thing was to try as much Taiwanese street food as possible at the night markets here in Kaohsiung. Whether you’re looking to pay your respects to the gods or taste some amazing Taiwanese street food on the buzzing night market, Kaohsiung is not to be missed on your trip when you travel to Taiwan.

Where we stayed in Kaohsiung: (superior double room with sea view, great location).

I'm so happy to be back in Taiwan, one of my favorite nations in the world! I was invited here by the Taiwan Tourism Bureau to cover parts of the island that I never knew existed, which led me down to the countryside to visit a few indigenous tribes. Did you know that the indigenous Taiwanese were the original settlers of the Philippines and many other Pacific Islands? I was fascinated to learn about this!

Along the 4 day journey around Taiwan with Deanna, I found it fascinating to see the difference between rural life and city life, which became the concept of this story. We went to Taiwan's second-biggest city called Kaohsiung to uncover the differences between Taiwan’s rural areas and its bustling cities. I was mesmerized by the amazing temples and delicious food! Finally, we made our way to Taipei where I take you on a journey to understand the wacky (yet fun) culture and experience a night market - one of the singular best things about Taiwan.

This is my Taiwan story, go create yours:

P.S. - There are a few minor corrections to the video that I want to make - thank you to those who helped fact-check!

1) At 1:40: Taiwan was under Japanese colonial rule from 1895 and left in 1945 at the end of World War II.
2) At 1:35: I misspoke - The Spanish and Dutch colonies were actually in the 17th century.

Thank you for watching and I'll see you next week!
