It feels like a completely undiscovered part of Thailand and the locals really welcomed us. It's also really affordable so if you are looking for a cheap destination then it's perfect for budget travel/backpackers. Most people head straight to the Thai islands but we recommend spending a day or 2 checking out Trang itself too. Whether it's your first time to Southeast Asia or not, Trang has something for everyone!

I left my overnight stop in Trang (see previous video) and headed towards the pier in order to take a ferry to the island of Koh Muk. Along the way, I stopped off at the charming town of Kan Tang which features a very cute railway station that lies at the end of the Andaman branch line. The town also features Thailand's oldest rubber tree; some tunnels dug by the Japanese during WWII; some nice old buildings in the centre of the town; plus a ferry that takes you across the wide Trang river. If you have time before the ferry to Koh Muk, then why not stop off here en route.

Ao Yai Fisherman’s Village - Traditional Living on Koh Kut - Thailand 2023
On Koh Kod’s east coast there is a small sea gypsy village called Ao Yai. The village is home to a mixture of both Thai and Cambodian residents. A trip to the fishing village gives you an authentic look at Thailand’s traditional fishing lifestyle.
Ao Yai is built on elevated boardwalks and stilt houses over the ocean. It is an easy walk through the village where you will meet friendly locals. You will notice the fishing nets strung up between houses where the locals process their daily catch.
The village hasn’t been developed as a tourist attraction, so you won’t find any accommodation around here. There are a few seafood restaurants serving the freshest possible food on the island. Ao Yai is best visited as a day trip across the island by either motorbike or songtaew.
The only other main village on the island is called Ao Salt which is also located on the north east of the island. It’s where the ferry terminal is from the mainland. It’s not as interesting as Ao Yai but you could combine a half day trip to see them both.
If you want to mix the trip up with a cultural experience, then definitely add a village on your list of things to do on Koh Kood. It’s a nice break from the beaches and gives you a chance to see more of the beautiful scenery on the island.
