Here I present an album of photographs of the Russian Imperial city of Tsaritsyn that lies on the River Volga. The city was renamed Stalingrad after Joseph Stalin on April 10, 1925. This was officially to recognize the city's and Stalin's role in its defense against the Whites between 1918 and 1920. Under Stalin, the city became a center of heavy industry and transshipment by rail and river.
The city became famous for its resistance — and the extensive physical damage and death toll it suffered — during the Battle of Stalingrad against the German Army in The Great Patriotic War.
In 1945 the Soviet Union awarded Stalingrad the title Hero City for its resistance. Great Britain's King George VI awarded the citizens of Stalingrad the jeweled Sword of Stalingrad in recognition of their bravery. In 1961, Nikita Khrushchev's administration changed the name of the city to Volgograd (Volga City) as part of his programme of de-Stalinization. Beginning in 2013, for nine days every year, the city may be officially referred to as Stalingrad.........
Today, the city has been entirely rebuilt with a fine promenade overlooking the River Volga, broad tree-lined avenues and a most remarkable memorial to the city's war-time resistance .

Kurgan is a city and administrative centre of Kurgan Oblast.
An urban settlement was established here between 1659 and 1662 as Tsaryovo Gorodishche by Timofey Nevezhin, a farmer from Tyumen. During the 18th century, the settlement was developed as a fortress town and served as a frontier post and being fortified was able to defend the inhabitants from attack. The city was granted city privileges by the Empress Catherine the Great in 1782, which is when it acquired its present name. The name is taken from a large kurgan (burial mound) close to the original settlement..............

During the 19th century, the town became a fashionable resort for Russian aristocracy and gentry. Leo Tolstoy spent his summers here. In 1898 Anton Chekhov bought a house (the white Dacha) here, where he lived until 1902.The town is also associated with the Imperial Family. In 1889 Emperor Alexander III constructed Massandra Palace to the north of Yalta and his son,m Emperor Nicholas II built the Livadia Palace south-west of the town in 1911.

Also known as the Assignation Bank, the bank was founded inn 1769 on the orders of Empress Catherine II and was the source of the first paper money to be circulated in Russia. The architect chosen was the Italian architect Giacomo Quarenghi and was one of his first major commissions in St. Petersburg....
As gold and silver were required for expenses on foreign wars, Russia found itself flooded with copper rubles, making anything larger than day-to-day payments extremely inconvenient. It was therefore decided to follow foreign models and issue assignation rubles, promissory notes tied to the copper currency (the silver ruble was a parallel currency, and quite soon had a much greater value than the assignation ruble).
Quarenghi's building was designed for the issuance of these notes, the storing and minting of copper coins, and for providing savings and loans banking to the Petersburg public.The Neo-classical design included a central three-storey building that housed the bank and surrounded by a horseshoe-shaped building for storage, printing and minting...
The back of the building faced the Catherine Canal (now Griboedov Canal), making it easier to bring metal coins to the bank by barge....
The building today houses the Saint Petersburg State University of Economics and Finance

Alexei Petrovich Maresiev was born in 1916 in Kamyshin in Saratov Province.
He was a Soviet Military Pilot and wad awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union in 1943.
On April 4, 1942, his Polikarpov I-16 was shot down near Staraya Russa and captured by Nazi forces.
Although, severely injured, Maresiev managed to crawl his way through enemy lines to the Russian Front,
feeding on the bark of trees, pine cones and berries. During his 18-day-long journey his injuries deteriorated
so badly that both of his legs had to be amputated below the knee. He was sent to a sanitarium in September 1942,
where he gained the use of his legs by using prosthetics. So much so, that in early 1943, he passed a medical
examination and was passed fit for flying.
During a dog fight in August 1943 he shot down three German Focke-Wulf Fw 190 fighters. In total, he completed 86 combat flights and shot down 11 German warplanes. He was awarded the Golden Star of the Hero of the Soviet Union (August 24, 1943), the highest military decoration of the USSR. In 1944 Maresyev joined the Communist Party and two years later retired from the army……………

Here I present an interesting album of photographs of the ancient city of Riga, the capital and largest city in the Baltic State of Latvia....
Riga has a long and varied history. Founded in 1201, the city had been a trading port for hundreds of years. Situated upriver from the mouth of the Daugava River, on a sheltered natural harbour. Riga began to develop as a centre of Viking trade during the early Middle Ages. In 1282, Riga became a member of the Hanseatic League giving it economic and politcal stability until the Polish-Swedish Wars between 1621-1625 when the city came under the rule of Sweden
When these photographs were taken, Riga was part of the Russian Empire in 1710 following the Russian Victory over Sweden in the Great Northern War. During these years under Russian rule, Riga developed as an important industrial port and was, by 1900, the third largest city in Russia after Moscow and St. Petersburg.....

Мое путешествие к Уракову бугру — археологическому памятнику, стоянки эпохи мезолита. Находится к северо-востоку от города Камышина, на правом берегу Волги, между селами Нижняя Добринка и Дубовка. Стоянка расположена на мысу, границы которого фиксируются расположенными севернее и южнее него глубокими оврагами у Уракова бугра. Наибольшее число находок было датировано 10,5 тысячами лет до н.э., когда на этой территории доминировал тундро-степной ландшафт ( данная информация взята из Википедии).

Бекешчаба (Békéscsaba) - административный центр медье (уезда) Бекеш на юго-востоке Венгрии. Родина знаменитой венгерской пряной колбасы из паприки «Csabai» и место проведения ежегодного одноимённого колбасного фестиваля. С 70-х годов 20-го века - побратим города Пензы (где есть улица Бекешская, на которой некогда находился ресторан «Кёриш»). В честь венгеро-советской дружбы в Бекешчабе был построен целый микрорайон (lakótelep) под названием Penza, существующий до сих пор.

Удивительные находки в России.
Не доезжая поселения Камышин Волгоградская область. Расположена закрытая зона и огорожена колючкой.На территории находится купол.Но не понятно зачем и как он служил.Помогите выяснить что это.Подписывайтесь делитесь с друзьями, возможно кто то подскажет. Очень интересная штука.
