The hill Kalugumalai (Hill of the vulture). Earlier it was known as Araimalai or Thirumalai. Even before that it was referred as Nechchuram and Tiruneccuram. Some of the epigraphies mentions that there was a palace for the pandya official called Ettimannan. At the foot of the Kalugumalai a large urn-burial cemetery was found. However hundreds of urns were destroyed during limestone quarrying.[4] Opposite to Kalugasalamoorthy Temple there is a small palace which served as local residence of Raja of Ettaiyapuram.

Kalugasalamoorthy Temple (or Kalugumalai Murugan temple) in Kalugumalai, , is dedicated to the Hindu god Murugan. Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is believed to have been expanded during the 18th century with the images excavated from Kalugumalai. The core temple has a rock-cut architecture exemplary of early Pandyan Art. The other portions of Kalugumalai houses the 8th century Kalugumalai Jain Beds and Vettuvan Koil, an unfinished Shiva temple.

In a beautiful town in Kovilpatti Taluk of Thoothukudi district called Kalugumalai, this Pandya period Rock-CutJain beds were carved.
Temple Architecture: Large panels representing Tirthankaras, flanked by attendants, seated on thrones, each under his respective tree, with the triple umbrella over their heads. Other panels show Yakshas and Yakshis elaborately worked. One of the panels shows Dharanendra Yaksha and Padmavati. The panel of standing Parsvanatha with the snake hoods over his head is a gem of early Pandya art.
History: Scholars believe the construction of this unfinished site belongs to the reign of Pandyan king Parantaka Nedunjadaiya (768-800 CE).

Vettuvan Kovil | தமிழ்நாட்டின் எல்லோரா கழுகுமலை வெட்டுவான் கோயில் | Kalugumalai Part 1
Vettuvan Kovil has a small Artha mandapam and garbhagriha, which now holds Lord Ganapathy inside. Amazingly carved figures of Uma Maheshwara , Dhakshina Murthy, Vishnu, Bramha. Also in the west side you can see Narasimha, Brahma , South side Dhakshina Murthy. And at the four corners you can see seated Nandi's, now badly damaged. Believed to have been excavated some 40 yrs before the excavation of Kailasa temple of Ellora.
The Vettuvan Koil is in Kalugumalai village, about 60 km from Tirunelveli and 20 kilometers from Kovilpatti. It is located in Thoothukudi district in southern Tamil Nadu.
Temple sits on the top of small stone hillock on the eastern side. The temple was built in the 8th century along with the Kalugumalai Jain Beds under the early Pandyan era
As per local legend, there was a rivalry between a father and son. The son started to work on lower rock for the Murugan temple, while father started working uphill. The son claimed that the father would never finish the shrine, which infuriated the father to kill the son.
It is believed that the son was able to finish the Murugan temple at the foothills, but the father's work on this temple was incomplete.

The temple is open from 5:30 am – 12:30 pm and 4:30 - 9 pm. Four daily rituals and many yearly festivals are held at the temple, of which the ten-day Vaikasi Visagam, 13-day Kanthasasti festival, ten-day Thaipoosam festival and the 13-day Panguni Uthiram festival being the most prominent.
