Mohács, Hungary

Mohács, town and river port, located in southern Hungary, is a common stop on Danube River cruises. In the past, the small town of Mohács twice was the place for decisive events in Hungarian and European history. Two massive and historically crucial battles were fought near the small town of Mohács. The Ottomans won the first in 1526 and swept north, the Habsburgs the second in 1687, driving the Ottomans out of East-Central Europe. The Historical Memorial Park just outside of town has a comprehensive collection of clothing, tools, and arms that show the cultural differences between the enemies. The town has a number of fascinating churches: the 18th-century Baroque Protestant church, the Roman Catholic church, the Serbian Greek Orthodox church and the Avas church. The central square is dominated by the Battlefield Memorial Church, the so-called Votive Church. On one side of the central square is the Town Hall, an intriguing Moorish style building, with cream and pink stonework and green domes. In front of the town hall and the church, there is a statue embodying what the town believes in. The Statue of the Three Nationalities is a good example how to present that all people are the same, no matter of our nationalities or religion. Today, Mohács is well known for its Busó Carnival, a wide range of tourist attraction and its vicinity to the nearby city of Pécs. Most important is the vicinity of the Duna (Danube)-Dráva National Park and its wide range of attractions. Mohás, since some years, has become a brand new destination for eco tourism activities and the outstanding quality of food and drinks make it a perfect destination for relaxed outdoor holidays.

Hungarian Puszta Horse Show Kalocsa Hungary Highlights

Highlights from a traditional Hungarian Puszta Horse Show near Kalocsa in Hungary. Not far from the Danube it is a popular excursion for both visitors to Budapest and also on Danube river cruises. Many of the main cruise lines visit here. I went while on a Emerald Waterways Danube cruise from Bucharest to Budapest. The show by traditional Magyar Cowboys includes longhorn cattle, horses that have been trained to lie down and sit which they historically did during battle to reduce visibility and they used whips to sound like gun fire. There is also an impressive finale where a man stands on the rear of two horses part of a charging nine-horse display. Come and join the fun in this video.

Kalocsa is famous for its folk art all over the world, and in this city there is the „Piros Rózsa” Folkdance Group, which has been active for decades. Our works present the traditions of Kalocsa to the world, when we are performing in Hungary or abroad. Our group focuses on and keeps the traditions of the town. The children, their parents and the adults dance together in our community. We have already taken part in a lot of festivals and we have won the „Best Classification” prize. A year ago we got this prize for the eleventh time. In our performances we present the traditional folk costumes of our city, which is very famous all over the world. The choreographies present the Hungarian traditions of the year, the folksongs and the dances of Kalocsa. A three men folk band accompanies the group.
The artistic directors are Kriszta Koszta Illésné and Zoltán Illés.
There are 40 members in the group.

Hungary (Europe) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Hungary.
The land of the Magyars is considered to be one of the oldest cultural regions in Europe and whose history dates back to primeval times. Hungary is a gateway between East and West, with a remarkable past and is a diverse country of nature and culture. In 1991 the Fertö Hansag National Park was founded on the Hungarian side of Lake Neusiedl, a protected natural area in which grey Hungarian cattle populate the soda veldts of small salt ponds and where water buffalo enjoy to wallow, while a variety of water fowl stop on their annual migration. Köszeg is one of Europe’s most beautiful castle cities, with typical courtyards and the little main square has a Marian column and Captain's Gate Tower. The square is dominated by the tall facade of the Saint Emmerich Church that was built above an ossuary by the Hungarian Calvinists in around 1615. A beautiful Baroque building contains yet another treasure, the Jesuit Apoteka, in which remedies were prepared according to ancient formulae. Budapest is the capital of Hungary, pearl of the Danube and ever-changing cosmopolitan city. In the south of Pest, historic buildings are located within the Gozsdu Courtyard and close by, in the Jewish quarter, the Great Synagogue, the second largest Jewish sacred building in the world. One of the main landmarks of Hungary’s capital city is the Parlament, an imposing Neo-Gothic building located alongside the Danube on the banks of Pest. At the confluence of the Tisza and Bodrog, within the northern tongue of Puszta, is the world famous wine growing region of Tokaj where the tradition of wine growing goes back several centuries and brought the area much prosperity. The southern Hungarian town of Kalocsa is located near the Danube and is a centre of paprika growing and folk culture that is well worth a visit. Hungary is a land of many faces, a glorious gem set in the heart of Europe.

Hungary | The Puszta and its Horsemen

The Hungarian horse culture has survived the test of time and its in the Puszta Region that you’ll find the masters still at work. Historically the Magyars were fierce, adroit fighters, who enjoyed immense success on the battlefield thanks to their light armor, sharp, curved swords, deadly archery skills and their prowess as horsemen.

The mounted horse-herdsman of Hungary are called Csikos. The csikós tradition is now closely associated to the environs of Debrecen and Hortobágy National Park.
