THE MALTA DIARIES - Filming Locations

Numerous locations in Malta, Gozo and Comino have appeared in Film and TV productions throughout the years. Here are just a few of the places that you can visit to find out why the camera loves them.

MALTA & GOZO [4K] – MALTA’23 W 11 DNI! – TOP 40! DRONE & WALK (#0 zabytki i atrakcje wyspy słońca)

... zapowiedź kolejnego cyklu wizualnych opowieści ... tym razem o Malcie. Wszystkie odwiedzone miejscowości zostaną udokumentowane oddzielnymi filmami. Polecam śledzenie szczegółowej relacji z wyprawy … ;-)

About Places 2 Go Travel P2GT =====================================================
On my travels I'm joined by my good lady (most of the time), my Dad (some of the time) our wider family occassionally and my dog when not travelling overseas.

What's This Channel About: It started as a travel diary, as a way to share our experiences with our friends and family. A wider audience took an interest in my videos and things just grew from there. I'm trilled at the idea that people on Youtube may get something out of my videos and I love to connect with people who are like minded and enjoy travel as much as we do. Why We Love To Travel: As a young adult I was always too busy working to take vacations. My mindset was fixed on building a successful business and this was always justified by telling myself that I'd travel once I'd made my fortunes. By the time I was 30 years old I'd only been on two overseas vacations and did not think I was missing out. Roll forward to 2015, my good lady finally convinced me to book a stay at an all inclusive resort in Fuerteventura. It was an amazing experience and I was instantly bitten by the travel bug and now want to see loads of different places and travel as much as we can.

How frequently Do you Travel : As frequently as possible, currently around seven times per year. We have committments at home meaning we need to fit our travel plans in around everyday life.

Why Are We Not On Camera: These videos are about the places, adventures, experiences and destinations. The videos are not about me / us - I'm not a TV presenter and I have absolutely not desire to be in front of the camera.

What's in our kitbag: Canon SX540, Canon SX510, various GoPro cameras including the Hero 3 Hero 4 Black and the Hero 5 Black plus a Nextbase Dashcam and Samsung and Apple cameraphones.

Our Favorite Places 2 Go Travel: Canary Islands, especially Lanzarote & Fuerteventura are big favourites with us because of the near year round sun and relaxing vibes. =====================================================

Malta Grand Harbour

The harbour mouth faces north east and is bounded to the north by Saint Elmo Point and further sheltered by an isolated breakwater and is bounded to the south by Ricasoli Point. Its north west shore is formed by the Sciberras peninsula, which is largely covered by the city of Valletta and its suburb Floriana. This peninsula also divides Grand Harbour from a second parallel natural harbour, Marsamxett Harbour. The main waterway of Grand Harbour continues inland almost to Marsa. The south eastern shore of the harbour is formed by a number of inlets and headlands, principally Rinella Creek, Kalkara Creek, Dockyard Creek, and French Creek, which are covered by Kalkara and the Three Cities: Cospicua, Vittoriosa, and Senglea. The harbour has been described as Malta's greatest geographic asset.[2]

With its partner harbour of Marsamxett, Grand Harbour lies at the centre of gently rising ground. Development has grown up all around the twin harbours and up the slopes so that the whole bowl is effectively one large conurbation. Much of Malta's population lives within a three kilometer radius of Floriana. This is now one of the most densely populated areas in Europe. The harbours and the surrounding areas make up Malta's Northern and Southern Harbour Districts. Together, these districts contain 27 of 68 local councils. They have a population of 213,722 which make up over 47% of the total population of the Maltese islands.

Kalkara Malta, by the sea

#malta #kalkara #sea

Kalkara is a small town with an area of 1.75km2 and a population of around 3,000 people. Kalkara is located in the Eastern part of Malta and it looks over the Grand Harbour. The town gets its name from the Calce, lime in Italian, since there was a lime kiln present there during the Roman times. Kalkara has two bays leading to the Grand Harbour known as Rinella Bay and Kalkara Creek and two peninsulas called Bighi and Ricasoli.
Historians believe that the Kalkara area was was the first to be inhabited when the first people came to Malta from Sicily. The inlets seem to be adequate shelter from the heavy storms of the Mediterranean Sea. Kalkara is known for boat building, in particular, the Maltese dgħajsa and barklori. The locals participate actively in the traditional boat races, known as the regattas, building their own boats.
The first stone of the current Parish Church was laid on the 13th October, 1946, after the previous one was destroyed in the Second World War. The church was designed on a neo-classical style by Vincenzo Bonello and Joseph D’Amato. The titular statue of St. Joseph is a wooden masterpiece that was created by the famous artist Ferdinando Stuflesser in Bolzano. The church was further adorned throughout the years; in 1953, Loreto Mintoff donated an exceptional high-altar made of marble, while the marble pulpit, the marble pavement and the Via Sacra were added along the years.

Kalkara: Things to see and do

Fort Ricasoli: This fort on the Rinella Peninsula was built by Grandmaster Nicholas Cottoner to defend the entrance of the Grand Harbour from the Turks. Giovanni Ricasoli contributed a lot for the fort’s construction, and that’s from where the fort got its name. The fort was used both by the Knights and the British, who also used it as a prison.
Fort Our Saviour: In 1724, Grandmaster Manoel de Vilhena wanted to build a fort close to the entrance of Kalkara in order to protect the adjacent Vittoriosa and to have a lookout at the Grand Harbour.

Villa Bighi: In 1650, Fra Giovanni Bighi constructed a large villa facing the entrance of the Grand Harbour. During the plague of 1813 the villa was used as a hospital, however, it was then pulled down to build a Naval Hospital instead. Bighi Naval Hospital took two years to be completed and was used extensively during the British reign. Nowadays, it serves as the International School of Restoration.

Villa Portelli: Overlooking the Kalkara Creek, there is Villa Portelli which was built by Sir Agostino Portelli as a summer residence. Throughout the Second World War, this villa was the residence of the Flag Officer, while from 1961, the Admirals started to use it as their residence.
