Arusha is a city in north eastern Tanzania and the capital of the Arusha Region, with a population of 416,442 plus 323,198 in the surrounding Arusha Rural District (2012 census).Located below Mount Meru on the eastern edge of the eastern branch of the Great Rift Valley, Arusha has a temperate climate. The city is close to the Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Lake Manyara National Park, Olduvai Gorge, Tarangire National Park, Mount Kilimanjaro, and Mount Meru in the Arusha National Park and is thus considered the safari capital of Tanzania.
Arusha is a major international diplomatic hub. It hosts the East African Community. From 1994 to 2015, the city also hosted the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, but that entity has ceased operations. It is a multicultural city with a majority Tanzanian population of mixed backgrounds: indigenous African, Arab-Tanzanian and Indian-Tanzanian population, plus a small European and an American minority population. Religions of the Arushan population include Christianity, Islam, Sikhism and Hinduism. Eneo la Hifadhi ya Menai Bay ndilo eneo kubwa zaidi la bahari lililohifadhiwa la Zanzibar. Ukristo ndio dini kubwa zaidi nchini Tanzania, lakini pia kuna Waislamu wachache na Waanimist. Zaidi ya lugha 100 tofauti zinazungumzwa nchini Tanzania, na kuifanya kuwa nchi yenye lugha nyingi zaidi katika Afrika Mashariki. Nchi haina lugha rasmi ya de jure, ingawa lugha ya taifa ni Kiswahili. Kiswahili kinatumika katika mijadala bungeni, katika mahakama za chini, na kama njia ya kufundishia katika shule ya msingi. Kiingereza kinatumika katika biashara ya nje, diplomasia, katika mahakama za juu, na kama njia ya kufundishia katika elimu ya sekondari na ya juu; ingawa serikali ya Tanzania inapanga kusitisha Kiingereza kama lugha ya msingi ya kufundishia, itapatikana kama kozi ya hiari. Utawala wa Wajerumani ulianza Tanzania Bara mwishoni mwa karne ya 19 wakati Ujerumani ilipounda Afrika Mashariki ya Kijerumani. Hii ilifuatwa na utawala wa Waingereza baada ya Vita Kuu ya Kwanza ya Dunia. Bara ilitawaliwa kama Tanganyika, huku Visiwa vya Zanzibar vikibaki kuwa eneo tofauti la mamlaka ya kikoloni. Kufuatia uhuru wao mwaka 1961 na 1963, vyombo hivyo viwili viliungana mwaka 1964 na kuunda Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania. Nchi hizo zilijiunga na Jumuiya ya Madola ya Uingereza mwaka 1961 na Tanzania bado ni mwanachama wa Jumuiya hiyo ikiwa ni jamhuri moja.
