Location
1. Gezer is in the eastern foothills of the coastal plain (Shaphelah) of western Israel. It is about 14 miles (22.5 km.) east of the Mediterranean Sea and about 19 miles (30.5 km.) west of Jerusalem. Tel Aviv sits about 17 miles (27 km.) to the northwest of Gezer.
2. Gezer was on the main north-south travel route called the Via Maris. It was also on a major east-west route that linked the coastal plain to Jerusalem and beyond.
The Via Maris connected three continents, Africa, Asia, and Europe.
This location is significant because Israel forms a narrow land bridge to connect these three continents.
To the east is a desert and to the west is the Mediterranean Sea. This forced trade and travelers to use the Via Maris.
Whatever happened in Israel was taken to the known world at that time.
3. Whoever controlled Gezer, controlled trade and influence in the ancient world in biblical times.
4. God, in His sovereignty, placed Israel on the crossroads of the known world so they could be a light to the world and communicate His message to them.
5. Gezer was in the territory of Ephraim.

Historical Background
1. Gezer is one of the largest tels in Israel.
2. Whoever controlled Gezer had significant control over the ancient world.
3. Gezer began to be inhabited some 5,000 years ago.
4. It has around 21 layers of civilizations.
5. A tel is a mound of earth that develops as one civilization builds upon another.
6. The Canaanites first lived here from around 3000 BC to around 2000 BC.
7. When the Israelites arrived in 1406 BC, they failed to drive out the Philistines and occupy Gezer.
8. As a result, the Philistines lived here from around 2000 BC until King David subdued them in around 1000 BC.
9. Gezer existed during the time of Christ.
10. Gezer is mentioned 14 times in the Bible.
11. During the Hasmonean revolt (167 BC) the Jews lived close-by to Gezer and used it for battle purposes.

Western Wall, Western Tunnels Overview Tour: Kotel, Jerusalem, Holiest Site in Judaism, Wailing Wall

See a complete overview of the Western Wall, Western Wall Tunnels, Kotel (Hebrew name), Western Wall Tour, Temple Mount Platform, Southern Stairs, Wailing Wall, and more in Jerusalem. A very biblical, in-depth look at the holiest site in Judaism.

TOUR TRIPS TO ISRAEL BY TODD FINK:
BOOKS ABOUT ISRAEL BY TODD FINK:

Location
1. The Western Wall, also known as the Wailing Wall (because the Jews weep here during their prayers) is located on the western side of the Temple Mount.
2. The Western Wall Tunnel is accessed on the northern side of the Western Wall Plaza and runs north to the end of the Temple Mount Platform.
Historical Background
1. When the Romans destroyed the temple in 70 AD, part of the western side of the Temple Mount Platform survived. For hundreds of years prior to 1967, people prayed in the small area of the wall that could be seen at that time. However, in 1967, following the Six-Day War, Israelis excavated below the ground level of the wall and found two more stone rows. They then cleared the area around the wall to create the Western Wall Plaza that visitors see today.
2. The Western Wall is part of the retaining wall, or support wall, that Herod the Great built in 19 BC when he enlarged the Temple Mount complex in order to accommodate a larger temple and Temple Mount area. It was a massive undertaking that required exceptional and sophisticated engineering.
3. Unlike many think, the Western Wall was not part of the wall of the temple King Herod Built.
Places of Interest
1. In the Western Wall Plaza area, a walkway bridge can be seen that tourist use to access the Temple Mount.
2. The Western Wall Plaza is divided into two sections: a men’s and a women’s section.
3. The area close to the wall is considered a synagogue, so men must wear a head covering when entering the men’s section.
4. Most Jews do not enter on the Temple Mount for fear of unknowingly walking in the place where the Holy of Holies might have been. Plus, Muslims do not want them entering there as well.
5. The Western Wall Plaza is the closest large public area to the temple and Holy of Holies for the Jews. Therefore, it is their most holy site.
6. On the northern side of the Western Wall is Wilson’s Arch, which is the modern name for a stone arch whose top is still visible today. It once supported a bridge that provided access to a gate that was level with the surface of the Temple Mount during the time of Jesus. Under this arch is a synagogue where Jews pray and read the Scriptures.
7. The Western Wall Plaza is only 10% of the entire western wall of the Temple Mount Platform. The majority of the wall is accessed by entering what is called “The Western Wall Tunnels.” We will see that part shortly.
8. The entire length of the Western Wall is 1,575 ft. long (480 m.), almost a third of a mile (.53 km.).
9. South of the Western Wall are stones that the Romans cast down when they destroyed the city in 70 AD. under the leadership of the Roman General, Titus.
10. The broken pavement of the street that the massive stones crushed when they fell is sobering to see.
11. Burn marks remain on some of the stones as a result of fire from the Roman conquest of the city in 70 AD.
12. There are remains of shops that were part of a large shopping plaza at the southern part of the Western Wall.
13. This is the same wall that Jesus and His disciples would have seen.
14. On the Southern Stair entrance to the temple is where Jesus would have taught His disciples and entered the Temple Mount area.
15. At the southernmost end of the Western Wall is a significant stone which stood upon the uttermost southwestern corner of the Temple Mount.
• It has words written in Hebrew that mean “The Trumpeter’s House.”
• A priest would stand at this corner announcing with a loud trumpet the beginning of the Sabbath, and other festival days the Jews celebrated.

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.

Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.

In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)

Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

Israel Part 3: Nazareth, Cana, and the ruins of Zippori National Park

Today’s video continues my trip in the northern region of Israel. Included is a visit to the Basilica of the Annunciation, the Zippori National Park ( Tsipori), and Kafr Kanna (Cana) and the town where Jesus performed his first miracle turning water to wine at the wedding.

Cana, place of Jesus' first miracle

About ten kilometers from Nazareth, in the Holy Land, there is Cana, also called Kafr Kanna, which in Arabic means village of Cana. This location is mentioned in the Bible to be the place of the first miracle of Jesus, who turned water into wine on the occasion of a wedding feast.

The Shrine of Jesus' First Miracle is located here, under the custody of the Franciscans, who have been present in Cana for three centuries.

The Wedding at Cana Jesus first Miracle

The Wedding at Cana where Jesus performed his first public miracle took place where it is today Kafar Kanna and it is located in the Galilee, about 5.3 miles north east to the city of Nazareth.

The miracle at the weeding at Kana by Jesus, which is considered as Jesus first miracle, is described at the Gospel of John and it is written here along the wall opposite the entrance to the church.
According to Christian tradition, the Franciscan Wedding church which we are visiting today marks the place of the wedding at Cana.
Each year on January 18 the Franciscan celebrate the first miracle by Jesus with a special solemn mass here at the Wedding church at Kana and we are here with them.
Now let’s enter the church.
This church is also dedicated to St. Bartholomeus, which was Jesus’ newest disciple at the time of the wedding and is identified by some scholars as Nathaniel from Canna of Galilee.
Over there behind the altar is a picture depicting the wedding and in front of the altar there are status of Jesus and Mary and off course jars symbolizing the miracle of Jesus by turning water into wine. This motive of ancient jars is spread throughout the church.
The church that we see today was built on the remaining of an old byzantine church. Here there is a fragment of a Byzantine mosaic dating from the 5th or 6th century which preserve the name of the donor in Aramaic – Pious Joseph son of Tanhum.
In memory of the pious Joseph, son of Tanhum, son of Bota and of his children who made this table, may it be for them a blessing, Amen”
Right next to the entrance of the church is an entrance to a museum which holds remaining of the first byzantine church and old jars founded in the area. One jar is said to be one of the six jars used for the miracle.
Over there is the area were the old byzantine church used to stand……… and as you can see some remaining of that church are still here.
Over there is where according to tradition the actual wedding took place…… and this is a replica of an ancient water jar from that period. See how people leave notes with prayer to god.
As we exit the church we shall get to a beautiful garden with motives from the weeding.
Every year on January 18th right at the end of the Solemn mass a big feast is taking place here in the garden with many guest from around the area…. Including our team.

John 2:1-11
New International Version
Jesus Changes Water Into Wine
2 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
4 “Woman,[a] why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”
5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.[b]
7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.
8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”
They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

According to the Gospel of John, during the wedding, realizing that the wine had run out, Mary said to Jesus, They have no more wine. Jesus answered her, Woman, what do you want from me? My hour has not yet come. His mother said to the servants, Whatever he tells you, do it.
There were there six stone amphorae for the ritual purification of the Jews, each containing from eighty to a hundred and twenty liters. Jesus said to them, Fill the jars with water, and they filled them to the brim. He said to them again, Now take some and bring it to the one who is in charge of the feast, who, after tasting the wine, approved it. According to the evangelist, This was the first miracle of Jesus, performed at Cana of Galilee.
The Church is owned by the Custody of the Holy Land, part of the Franciscan order in the Catholic Church. The current church was built circa 1881, and expanded from 1897-1905, following efforts by the Franciscans to acquire the site between 1641 and 1879, when acquisition was completed. Twentieth-century archaeological excavations indicated that, before the current church building, the site housed a Jewish synagogue in the fourth and fifth centuries, and tombs under the rule of the Byzantine Empire in the fifth and sixth centuries.

In 1901 the current facade was built, and September 30, 1906, Bishop Angelo Roncalli consecrated the altar. In the second half of the 1990s, the Holy Land began an extensive renovation of the church, completed in 1999.
