Polonia, un país de 38 millones de habitantes y 312.700 km² ubicado en la porción oriental de la Europa Central.
En estas primeras horas en Varsovia, que significan nuestra cuarta visita al país, nos hemos encontrado con una ciudad revitalizada después de la pandemia.
Limita al norte con el mar Báltico y el óblast ruso de Kaliningrado, al noreste con Lituania, al este con Bielorrusia, al sureste con Ucrania, al sur con la República Checa y Eslovaquia y al oeste con Alemania.
Es una república parlamentaria, católica y cuyo idioma es el polaco, una lengua eslava occidental y forma parte de la Unión Europea.
Su capital y ciudad más poblada es Varsovia, dónde acabamos de llegar y vamos a tener nuestras primeras impresiones. La ciudad, de 1.777.000 habitantes, está situada en el centro-este del país.
Nos han contado en estás primeras horas que los polacos son de naturaleza pesimista, siempre parecen estar tristes y preocupados. Nos dijeron que se quejan por todo, que sí hace frío, que hace calor, que sí llueve o que no llueve, del tiempo, de la política y de las enfermedades. Pero eso es algo que aún tenemos que comprobar.
Las estadísticas acompañan está hipótesis. Al pedírseles que calificaran su satisfacción general ante la vida en una escala de 0 a 10, los polacos otorgaron una calificación promedio de 6.1 cifra menor que el 6.7 promedio de países desarrollados.
Lo cierto es que no vemos mucha gente alegre, o sonriendo, todos parecen ir en absoluta seriedad.
Polonia nos está resultando un país económico. Entró en la Unión Europea el Primero de mayo de 2004, sin embargo, no ha completado la Unión Monetaria; la moneda circulante sigue siendo el złoty y no se ha dado una fecha oficial para la introducción del euro.
Algunos célebres polacos se nos vienen a la mente inmediatamente al pisar este territorio.
Frederic Chopin, compositor exponente del romanticismo, nació en los alrededores de Varsovia de madre polaca y padre francés.
Viajó a Viena y posteriormente a París para continuar sus estudios musicales. Pero nunca volvió a Polonia porque ésta se encontraba sumida en revueltas libertarias como consecuencia de la pérdida de la independencia del país.
Nicolás Copérnico. El siglo 16 fue una época de prosperidad económica y desarrollo cultural para Polonia. En aquella época, la humanidad creía que el Sol y los planetas orbitaban alrededor de la tierra.
Pero en 1543, el mismo año de su muerte, Copérnico publicó la teoría de que la Tierra y los otros planetas orbitan alrededor del Sol. Esta idea fue tomada como revolucionaria.
Mientras caminamos por las calles de Varsovia no podemos dejar de admirar la belleza femenina. Pero además de bellas las polacas han hecho historia. Maria Skłodowska-Curie, la primera mujer en recibir dos veces el Premio Nobel, de Física y de Química, nació aquí.
Madame Curie viajó a París para continuar sus estudios y al igual que Chopin, nunca olvidó su tierra y compartió el anhelo de los polacos por recuperar su independencia. Por eso denominó polonio al primer elemento que descubrió y por el que recibió asimismo su primer Premio Nobel.
Polonia es un país eminentemente católico y eso puede verse a simple vista en las innumerables iglesias coronada de cruces. El polaco Karol Wojtyła, arzobispo de Cracovia y Papa Juan Pablo II fue el primer pontífice eslavo en la historia de la Iglesia Católica y permaneció en el Vaticano hasta su muerte.
Parece que es un designio de los polacos tener que salir de su tierra. En nos sucesivos videos de esta serie intentaremos saber por qué.
El territorio polaco comprende en su porción más grande al norte parte de la gran llanura europea y abarca al sur territorio montañoso de los Sudetes, los Cárpatos y la Sierra de la Santa Cruz.
Iremos a la costa del mar Báltico y recorreremos algunas de las ciudades más bonitas.
La tarde se hizo honda y nos caímos dentro admirando la belleza que circula y se estanca a nuestro alrededor.

Eurail Pass validity
You can travel in Poland with the Eurail Global Pass or the Eurail Poland Pass. These Eurail Passes are valid on:
all trains operated by the national railway company PKP / PKP Intercity JSC. This includes domestic trains with sleeper cars.
trains on the regional railway lines:
- Przewozy Regionalne (Regional Services).
- Koleje Dolnośląskie (operating in the area of Lower Silesia).
Please note: the Kulturzug, the direct train between Wroclaw and Berlin, is not included.
- PKP Szybka Kolej Miejska w Trójmieście Sp. z o.o. (SKM w Trójmieście).
Eurail Passes are not valid in Poland on:
trains operated by Arriva PCC.
trains operated by Koleje Mazowieckie (KM).
International trains
The international services in Poland include:
international day trains to Berlin, Prague, Vienna and Budapest

Train types and reservations
The main train types in Poland are:
Express InterCity (EIC, ExpressIC) - domestic standard trains with optional reservation.
Express InterCity Premium - domestic high-speed train with mandatory reservation and supplement.
If your reservation is made outside of Poland, you'll be asked to pay an additional 10 euros on the train.
EuroCity (EC) - international high standard trains, reservation mandatory on domestic routes.
Twoje Linie Kolejowe (TLK) - fast trains with optional reservation in 1st class, no reservation in 2nd class.
Express (Ex) - express trains (obligatory reservation).
InterRegio (IR) and Regio (R) - local trains without reservations.
Reservations for EIC, EX, IC, EC and TLK trains are free if made locally in Poland.
How can I make reservations for trains in Poland?
At train stations in Poland:
By making your reservation at a railway ticket office in Poland you don't pay a reservation fee, making this by far your best option.
If you want to take an Express InterCity Premium train you'll still need to pay a supplement.
While it's often possible to make your reservation on the day of travel, some trains do get fully booked, especially in summer. Consider making your reservation in advance.
Online:
You can reserve Polish trains using the Eurail Reservation Service.
You can reserve Polish trains through PolRail.
By phone. By calling the Deutsche Bahn booking centre on +49 1806 996 633 (open 24/7).

This is Kępno's main railway station. It's a train station with german architecture and that has recently been renewed by the European Union. The trains usually goes to Krakow, Ostrów Wielkopolski, Poznań or Kluczbork. Soon there will be trains available to Wrocław (Breslau).
