Trip to multicultural Kėdainiai and the center of Lithuania | Travel guide

Hi, here's another municipality video - Kėdainiai district located right at the geographical center of Lithuania.

Kėdainiai was a great place to visit and it astonished me that it was such a multicultural and historical city. When visiting you can see a lot of german and Scottish influence still visible in architecture today.
In this video I talk about all this and more - like the J. Monkute - Marks gallery in the city, Skinderiškis dendrological park, Apytalaukis Dotnuva and Paberžė manor houses, and the childhood home of Nobel prize winner Czesław Miłosz.

---

I'm Justina and I'm travelling around all 60 municipalities of Lithuania, a small country in the north east of Europe.

Disclaimer: None of my videos are sponsored, I choose to visit each of places mentioned based on my own research of the region and my interest.

Tour in Kedainiai with a guide #13

Jerulita Travel” professional guides are visiting one of the oldest Lithuanian cities – Kėdainiai. It is in the very heart of the country, just a few miles away from the officially confirmed geographical center of Lithuania.

The cultural diversity that existed in Kėdainiai created a unique town identity. Its old road network, trading squares, sacral and residential building reflect the life and traditions of various nations and confessions that used to live here: Lithuanians, Jews, Germans, Poles, Russians, and even Scotts.

Kėdainiai is humorously titled as the cucumber capital of Lithuania. Gardening, and particularly cultivating of cucumbers, has been popular here since the 19th century, while most gardeners were Jews. What else were Jews doing in Kedainiai and how the modern citizens of Kėdainiai keep the memory of the former Jewish Community? All these Jerulita guides are explaining in two next episodes of Jerulita Travel series.

Most Beautiful Place in Lithuania?!

Nida Lithuania is one of the most beautiful places I've been to in Lithuania. Of course, there are still SO many places to explore in this country, so I can't say for sure yet, but it's without a doubt been my favorite place I've visited in Lithuania so far.

All Songs from Epidemic Sound

Song One: Kids in Love by Tellow

Well it USED to be. Sort of. Welcome to The Fascinating Town of Kėdainiai, Lithuania.

I came to Lithuania in search of a wee piece of Scotland. But will I find it? I must admit, this was one of my favourite videos to film, it felt like a proper mission and it was you guys who came up with the idea - please tell me more of these! Anyway, welcome to Kėdainiai, I hope you enjoy it...

I don’t pretend to be a travel expert, but I love what I do and would be honoured if you came along with me. My channel focusses on the wide-eyed wonder and excitement of finding somewhere new, and my genuine reaction to it. You might not get a history lesson in my videos, but who knows, you might pick up some useful travel tips along the way, add a few destinations to your bucket list and hopefully be entertained by what you see. Thanks for watching, it means a lot to me :)

I do ALL of this myself. Planning, filming, editing, promoting, all with a weekly upload schedule, so please understand not every video will be an epic adventure. But my pledge is to always do my best in any situation.

FAQs:
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotels especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman.
WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature whenever possible, but she has her own life and a proper job so it can take a while for our schedules to match up. Trust me though, I prefer it when She is there too!
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
WHY THE ADS?
It's my income, I can't do this for free.
CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links below for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for YouTube Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

Magnificent Old Town of Kėdainiai! I Lithuania Travel VLog I #saltibarsciai

Kėdainiai Old Town is just magnificent. Kamilė and I finally had a chance to visit it. It is one of seven Old Towns of Lithuania and is a state-protected urbanistic monument. The Old Town has a number of preserved valuable Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Classicist-style buildings, four trading squares of the 15th-17th century and a historical road network. The town's history dates back from 1372, when the name of Kėdainiai was first mentioned in the Livonian Chronicle of Hermann de Wartberge. It grew and developed spontaneously until the 16th century, and was planned according to the Valakai Reform in the 16th century.

Kėdainiai Old Town is an open-air museum, telling the rich history of the town and Lithuania. Properties are not cheap here, as they are real and not faked, reaching us today from the bygone centuries. Visiting Kėdainiai Old Town will give a unique historical experience: to walk the winding streets of Old Town is as if to walk through a 17th century town. You will find brand stores, hotels, cosy cafes, bakeries and museums in the Old Town. Sightseeing tours and thematic excursions around Old Town are also offered. Today, the Old Town covers an area of 89.69 ha.

Lithuania (/ˌlɪθjuˈeɪniə/ (About this soundlisten) LITH-ew-AY-nee-ə;[10] Lithuanian: Lietuva [lʲɪɛtʊˈvɐ]), officially the Republic of Lithuania (Lithuanian: Lietuvos Respublika), is a country in the Baltic region of Europe. Lithuania is considered to be one of the Baltic states.[11] The country is situated along the southeastern shore of the Baltic Sea, to the east of Sweden and Denmark. It is bordered by Latvia to the north, Belarus to the east and south, Poland to the south, and Kaliningrad Oblast (a Russian exclave) to the southwest. Lithuania has an estimated population of 2.8 million people as of 2019, and its capital and largest city is Vilnius. Other major cities are Kaunas and Klaipėda. Lithuanians are Baltic people. The official language, Lithuanian, is one of only two living languages in the Baltic branch of the Indo-European language family, the other being Latvian.

For centuries, the southeastern shores of the Baltic Sea were inhabited by various Baltic tribes. In the 1230s, the Lithuanian lands were united by Mindaugas and the Kingdom of Lithuania was created on 6 July 1253. During the 14th century, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was the largest country in Europe;[12] present-day Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, and parts of Poland and Russia were the territories of the Grand Duchy. With the Lublin Union of 1569, Lithuania and Poland formed a voluntary two-state personal union, the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. The Commonwealth lasted more than two centuries, until neighbouring countries systematically dismantled it from 1772 to 1795, with the Russian Empire annexing most of Lithuania's territory.

As World War I neared its end, Lithuania's Act of Independence was signed on 16 February 1918, declaring the founding of the modern Republic of Lithuania. In the midst of the Second World War, Lithuania was first occupied by the Soviet Union and then by Nazi Germany. As World War II neared its end and the Germans retreated, the Soviet Union reoccupied Lithuania. On 11 March 1990, a year before the formal dissolution of the Soviet Union, Lithuania became the first Baltic state[13] to declare itself independent, resulting in the restoration of an independent State of Lithuania.

Lithuania is a high-income advanced economy[14][15] with a very high Human Development Index,[16] a very high standard of living and performs favourably in measurements of civil liberties, press freedom, internet freedom, democratic governance and peacefulness. Lithuania is a member of the European Union, the Council of Europe, eurozone, Schengen Agreement, NATO and OECD. It is also a member of the Nordic Investment Bank, and part of Nordic-Baltic cooperation of Northern European countries.

Tour in Kedainiai part 2. #14

Yulik Gurvitch the guide of “Jerulita Travel” continues touingr in Kėdainiai and immerses into the life of its Jewish Community that had flourished here since the beginning of the 17th century.

In order to increase the merchant population of Keidan, the owner of the place Christopher Radzivill offered the Jews land and granted the Jews full civilian rights. At the same time, despite Radzivill's desire to absorb more Jews, he was strict in selecting which Jews would be permitted to settle and accepted only those who had recommendations that testified to their reputation and honesty. As a result, the Keidan Jews mainly came from Germany and tended to be learned and of the higher classes.

It was said that if a Jew from Keidan was traveling, and someone asked where he was from, he would puff out his chest and poke a finger at his heart, replying proudly: Me? I'm a Keidaner! And so forcefully would he poke that it looked like the finger might go right into his chest. Thus people took to calling them Keidaner mit griblen in hartzn - Yiddish for Keidaners with holes in their hearts.
