Padanna Backwaters | Beautiful Unexplored Places in Kerala

In Kannada language salt fields are referred to as padanna. It is believed that as there were large tracts of salt fields in between the river that flowed west and the sandy shore, the place came to be known as Padanna. Though there are no salt fields today, the place holds a unique position in the tourism map thanks to kallumakai (mussels) and community farming. Prior to Independence, Padanna and Udinoor villages situated in the southern part of south Karnataka were part of the erstwhile Madras State. Later Padanna and Udinoor were combined to form today’s Padanna panchayath.

The Kavvayi Backwaters in the Kannur district of Kerala form the largest Lake in the Malabar region (North Kerala) and the third largest in Kerala. It is formed by the estuaries of the Thejaswini, Karingode and the Perumbra rivers. The 20 km long Lake extends from Cheruvathur in the north and Ezhimala in the south. A barrier island separates the lake from the Arabian Sea. The Kavvayi Lake has an opening towards the Arabian Sea at its northern side in Azhithala.

EZHIMALA BEACH | EZHIMALA BEACH PAYYANUR | Beaches in Kerala | Beautiful Ezhimala beach in payyanur

The sea curves around three sides of the seven peaked Ezhimala hills. Ezhimala beach is artistically set by nature at the foot steps of those hills.

Just adding spice to splendour, sea here is truly blue and the sands are of a different texture.

Hills appear painted green with dense bushes amidst scattered coconut palms.

Intrigue permeates the hill slopes where carved stone pillars are seen scattered around.It gets even intense at the bottom where a cave and an ancient burial chamber suddenly appear before eyes.

There is also an old mosque on top of the hill that attracts many visitors.

Hill top bushes are home to medicinal herbs that are hard to find elsewhere. Ezhimala hills are renowned for them.

Dolphins are usually spotted at the nearby Ettikulam Bay. So it has become a favorite spot of Dolphin enthusiasts.

For those who are looking for an isolated place abundant in natural beauty, Ezhimala beach Kerala delivers that in droves.
