Steiermark, English Styria, has an area of 6,327 square miles (16,387 square km). Upper Steiermark extends in the north from the Limestone Alps to the eastern groups of the Central Alps, embracing the valleys of the Mur, Mürz, Salza, and Upper Enns rivers. The Lower Steiermark upland and hill country consists of the middle Mur Valley with the Grazerfeld “plain” in the centre; the Koralpe and Packalpe rising above 6,500 feet (2,000 metres) in the west; and a gravel, loam-covered hill country in the east.
Ethnically, Steiermark is German. Most inhabitants are Roman Catholic. Ancient folklore, song, and dance are preserved in the mountainous areas and the gray-green Steiermark suit is almost an Austrian national costume. The principal urban centres are Graz, the capital, Leoben, Kapfenberg, Bruck, Eisenerz, Knittelfeld, Köflach, Mürzzuschlag, and Fohnsdorf.

In this video we take a last trip with the world’s longest serving steam locomotive along the rural Graz to Köflach Railway, through the Graz suburbs to reach the attractive Austrian countryside punctuated by pretty wayside towns and villages. Filmed from the passenger seat, open carriage balconies and several lineside locations, this film completes this four part series showing the railway along with its unique steam locomotive No.671.

Driver’s Eye View of Austria’s legendary “Semmering Railway” – Payerbach to to Mürzzuschlag
Enjoy the view normally reserved for the driver as we travel over the first mountain railway in Europe to employ standard gauge track. The railway was constructed between 1848 and 1854 by some 20,000 workers featuring 14 tunnels (among them the 1,431 m summit tunnel), 16 viaducts (several two-storey), along with numerous attractive stone bridges. Our train has to tackle 2.5% gradients and negotiate curves as tight as 190m radius, a real challenge for any train. The railway is so remarkable that it has been added to the list of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. Please sit back and join me for a ride over this highly scenic Alpine railway.

Graz (German pronunciation: [ɡʁaːt͡s]) is the capital of Styria and the second-largest city in Austria after Vienna. Graz has a long tradition as seat of universities: its six universities have almost 60,000 students. Its historic centre is one of the best-preserved city centres in Central Europe.[4]
For centuries, Graz (Slovene: Gradec) was more important to Slovenes, both politically and culturally, than the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana, and it remains influential to this day.[5]
In 1999, Graz was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites, and the site was extended in 2010 with Eggenberg Palace (German: Schloss Eggenberg). Graz was the sole Cultural Capital of Europe of 2003 and became a City of Culinary Delights in 2008.

An alternative forward view - Köflach to Graz - See the 159 year old driving gear in action.
Once again we see world’s longest serving steam locomotive GKB No.671 in action. The footplate crew had already kindly allowed me to place a camera on the front of the locomotive, when one of them asked “if you place a camera here, it will film the motion gear in action”. I had to agree it would give a very different view, so I fixed a second camera as suggested. I had intended to mix the resulting footage with a “Passengers Eye View” of the trip, but after watching the video captured by the camera, I decided to upload the full journey, allowing viewers to pick and choose what they watch. I hope you enjoy this unusual camera angle.

Charming and Adorable Medieval Krems, Austria
There is a Viking included tour to Gottweig Abbey but we said, nay and concentrated on adorable Krems. Lower Stein and Upper Krems together are Krems and is loaded to the brim with little medieval houses, remaining gates, etc.
