Pieksämäki on Suomen kaupunki Etelä-Savon maakunnan luoteisosassa. Kaupungissa asuu 17 376 ihmistä, ja sen pinta-ala on 1 836,23 km², josta 267,52 km² on vesistöjä. Väestötiheys on 11,08 asukasta/km². Pieksämäen naapurikuntia ovat Hankasalmi, Joroinen, Juva, Kangasniemi, Leppävirta, Mikkeli, Rautalampi ja Suonenjoki.
Pieksämäen maisemille luonteenomaisia ovat korkeat moreeniharjanteet. Näille harjanteille muodostui kiinteää asutusta jo 1400- ja 1500-luvuilta alkaen. Uusimmat tutkimukset osoittavat Pieksämäellä olleen yhtäjaksoista asustushistoriaa yli 5 000 vuoden ajan.
Pieksämäen pitäjä perustettiin vuosien 1574–1575 aikana.Pieksämäen keskuksena oli 1920-luvulle saakka Tienristin seutu Pieksämäen selänteellä. Ratkaisevaa muutosta merkitsi Savon radan valmistuminen vuonna 1889, vaikkakin Pieksämäen rautatieasema oli alkuaikoinaan varsin pieni. Pieksämäestä tuli risteysasema vuonna 1914, jolloin Savonlinnan ja Pieksämäen välinen rataosuus avattiin liikenteelle. Vuonna 1918 valmistui vielä rataosa Pieksämäeltä Jyväskylään. Rautatieaseman kasvaessa sen läheisyyteen muodostui vähitellen uusi asuinalue.
1920-luvulla suunniteltiin Pieksämäen asemanseudun muuttamista taajaväkiseksi yhdyskunnaksi, ja arkkitehti Toivo Paatela laati tätä varten vuonna 1923 asemakaavaehdotuksen. Alueen maanomistajat kuitenkin vastustivat hanketta. Päätös kauppalan perustamisesta tehtiin vuonna 1929, ja Pieksämän kauppala erotettiin Pieksämäen pitäjästä vuonna 1930. Vuonna 1937 vahvistettiin professori Otto-Iivari Meurmanin laatima asemakaava. Soinen ja vetinen maaperä haittasi kuitenkin kauppalan rakentamista, minkä vuoksi läheisen Pieksänjärven pintaa oli laskettava. Järven laskuhanke saatiin päätökseen vuonna 1953.
Kauppalan asukkaat eivät hyväksyneet Pieksämä-nimeä, vaan käyttivät itsepintaisesti Pieksämäkeä. Myöskään Rautatiehallitus ei suostunut muuttamaan Pieksämäen aseman nimeä. Niinpä Pieksämä- ja Pieksämäki-nimien samanaikaisesta käytöstä aiheutui paljon sekaannuksia. Vuonna 1948 kauppalan nimi muutettiin takaisin Pieksämäeksi ja siitä tuli kaupunki vuonna 1962. Pieksämäen kauppalanseurakunta – vuodesta 1962 kaupunkiseurakunta – itsenäistyi Pieksämäen maaseurakunnasta vuoden 1956 alussa

In this video we were in Finland back in 1991 and filming a landing in Vaasa, Finland. The aircraft in question is a McDonnel Douglas DC-9 operated by Finnair. This flight came in from Helsinki. The plane arrives just in front of the small terminal in Vaasa.
