Today we’re showing you around this charming and historic university town situated in southwestern Germany. This was the final stop of our trip across Germany and while we only had 3 days here, we still managed to cover a lot of the main attractions in the old town.
In this video, we’ll be touring the ruins of Heidelberg Castle and exploring some of its gems which include an enormous wine barrel and the apothecary museum. We’ll wander through Heidelberg University, which happens to be the oldest university in all of Germany, and at one point had an infamous student jail. Plus, we’ll hike the Philosopher’s Way for epic sunset views, we’ll stroll along the banks of the Neckar River, and we’ll enjoy some hearty German and international dishes along the way because you already know how much we love food.

Let's go to the beautiful city of Heidelberg which is a college town situated on the river Neckar in south-west Germany. At the 2015 census, Heidelberg's population was 156,257, with roughly a quarter of its population being students. Founded in 1386 in Heidelberg, Heidelberg University is Germany's oldest and one of Europe's most reputable universities.
We are going to walk along the Old Town of Heidelberg (German: Altstadt), on the south bank of the Neckar, which is long and narrow and we are going to visit popular and historic sites including: the marketplace of Heidelberg (or, the market square) with the imposing Town Hall; the Main Street (Hauptstrasse) which is a mile-long pedestrian street, running the length of the old town; the old stone bridge of Heidelberg which was erected 1786–1788 and which is a medieval bridge gate is on the side of the old town, and was originally part of the town wall; the Church of the Holy Spirit (Heiliggeistkirche), a late Gothic church in the marketplace of the old town; and other historic and important sites.

The main street is the central traffic axis in Heidelberg's old town , which it crosses in its entirety. Today it is a pedestrian zone and a popular shopping street. There are numerous important buildings on it, such as the town hall , the Heiliggeistkirche or the Providenzkirche .
The main street runs from Bismarckplatz to Karlstor with slight bends parallel to the Neckar across the entire old town.

Froschkönige schenken ihrer Heimat zum Jubiläum ein Lied
„Jockgrim ist die Heimat der Froschkönige und es liegt uns am Herzen, zum 750. Geburtstag etwas Besonderes beizusteuern, das allen Spaß macht und bei dem alle Kinder mitmachen können“, erklärt Sabine Deutsch, die 1. Vorsitzende des Kinder- und Jugendchors. So wurde die Idee geboren, Jockgrim ein eigenes Lied zu widmen, in dem seine Schönheit und die Lebensfreude der Menschen zum Ausdruck kommen.
Komponiert und getextet hat es Nina Schromm, Dirigentin der Froschkönige. „Melodie und Rhythmus erinnern an Gospel und Schlager, es ist kein ausgesprochenes Kinderlied“, erklärt die Diplom-Gesangslehrerin. Den Froschkönigen hat das Lied auf Anhieb gefallen und sie proben das Stück bereits seit einigen Wochen mit Begeisterung, denn es ist ein echter Ohrwurm. Hat man es einmal gehört und dazu geschnippt, will es einfach nicht mehr aus dem Kopf. Und – ganz wie die Profis – waren die Sängerinnen und Sänger Anfang Mai im Tonstudio und haben das Lied, zusammen mit dem Jugendchor 007, auf CD aufgenommen.
Doch beim großen Finale am Kindertag zum Ortsjubiläum, dem 12. Juli, um 17 Uhr, werden nicht nur die Froschkönige die neue Jockgrim-Hymne singen: Alle Jockgrimer Kinder sind aufgerufen, dabei zu sein. Nina Schromm probt dafür bereits mit den Kindern in den Kindergärten und in der Grundschule. „Wir haben uns sehr gefreut, dass die Zusammenarbeit mit den Einrichtungen sehr gut funktioniert und wir mit offenen Armen empfangen wurden“, so Sabine Deutsch. Auch diese Chorproben in den Einrichtungen sind ein Geschenk zum Jubiläum von den Froschkönigen an die Jockgrimer Kinder.
