Today in our Czech Republic 4K walk, we will visit the amazing city of Hradec Kralove! Once in the Middle Ages, it even competed in importance with Prague! Let's walk along the streets of The Old Town and visit the beautiful central park!
Hradec Králové is one of the oldest and historically most significant Czech cities. For centuries, it was one of the dowry towns of Czech queens. It has about 91,000 inhabitants. It is the capital of the Hradec Králové Region. The historical center of Hradec Králové is well preserved and is protected by law as an urban monument reservation. The center is saved as an urban monument zone.
Hradec Králové lies at the confluence of the Elbe and the Orlice rivers. It is located in the East Elbe Table flatland, in the eastern part of the Polabí lowlands. The municipal territory is rich in small fish ponds. The highest point is the hill Slatina, 281 meters (922 ft).
The first written mention of a castle named Hradec is in Chronica Boemorum, written in 1119–1125, when the castle's record is associated with the year 1091. The document from 1073 mentioned Hradec is a forgery from the 12th century. The first written mention of the settlement of Hradec is from 1225, and it was already referred to as a city. In 1306, Hradec became a dowry town ruled by Bohemian queens. It was the residence of Elizabeth Richeza of Poland in 1308–1318 or Elizabeth of Pomerania in 1378–1393. In the 14th century, thanks to the presence of the queens, the city became a military and political center of a region with a high level of education and culture.
Extensive fires in 1290, 1339, and 1407 accelerated the reconstruction of the city. In 1420, during the Hussite Wars, the town was conquered by the Hussites and became their military center. In 1423, the Hussites completely destroyed the castle where the queens used to live. During the rule of King George of Poděbrady, the city experienced a new period of economic, political, and cultural prosperity.
The development ended in 1547 when Hradec Králové joined the campaign against Emperor Ferdinand I, and as a result, many of its properties were confiscated, and its privileges were taken away. The city did not recover economically until the end of the 16th century. At this time, the houses were rebuilt in the Renaissance style.[5]
Hradec Králové was hit hard by the Thirty Years' War. It was conquered by the Swedish army in 1639 and several more times in the following years. The city was depopulated and almost destroyed at the end of the war. However, the town recovered and acquired a Baroque character in the 17th and early 18th centuries. During the War of the Austrian Succession, the city was again involved in the war due to its strategic location.
In 1766, Joseph II decided to build a large modern military fortress in the city. Its construction changed the character of the town and its surroundings, some suburbs were demolished, and the inhabitants moved into newly established settlements. A nearby hill was dismantled to build the massive walls, and the riverbed of both the Elbe and the Orlice were changed. A complete defense infrastructure was constructed inside the walls. The fortress was finished in 1789 and occupied 320 hectares (790 acres), but it was never used in the war during its existence.
In the mid-19th century, industrialization began, and several industrial enterprises were founded inside the fortifications. The Battle of Königgrätz, the decisive battle of the Austro-Prussian War, took place on 3 July 1866 near Hradec Králové. This event is commemorated in the famous Königgrätzer Marsch. Moreover, the struggle put an end to the age of fortifications. The fortress was formally abolished in 1884 and gradually demolished between 1893 and 1914. The last remnants were destroyed between 1929 and 1930.
In 1884, a then-unique international competition for the city's regulatory plan was announced. In the 1890s, several representative buildings (monastery, synagogue, high school, etc.) were built. Before World War I, the harmonious development of the city and its high architectural level were influenced primarily by the architect Jan Kotěra. In the 1920s, his pupil, another prominent Czech architect Josef Gočár, became the leading figure in the city's development. His regulatory plan from 1926–to 1928 became the basis for the construction activity in the years to come. The urban development of Hradec Králové in the 1920s and 1930s was also appreciated abroad, and the city was nicknamed the Salon of the Republic.

Dominantou Jindřichova Hradce je jednoznačně státní hrad a zámek Jindřichův Hradec, který je 3. největším hradním (zámeckým) komplexem v České republice. Město leží na řece Nežárce a žije zde přibližně 21 tisíc obyvatel. V těsné blízkosti historického jádra Jindřichova Hradce, které je městskou památkovou rezervací, se nachází rybník Vajgar o rozloze 49 ha.

Mezi další historické památky patří sloup se sousoším Nejsvětější Trojice na náměstí Míru, městské opevnění, kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie, kostelem sv. Jana Křtitele a zámecký pivovar. Pro Jindřichův Hradec je také typická úzkokolejná trať (tzv. úzkokolejka), Krýzovy jesličky - největší mechanický lidový betlém na světě (od roku 1998 zapsány v Guinessově knize rekordů).
S Jindřichovým Hradcem je spjatý tragicky zesnulý hokejista Jan Marek, hokejisté bratři Michálkové, Aleš Kotalík, fotbalisté Karel Poborský, Stanislav Tecl a v letech 1831–1835 v místním pivovaru pobýval Bedřich Smetana, jenž zde utrpěl vážný úraz, který zapříčinil jeho pozdější hluchotu.

Bikepacking Czech Republic - DAY 9 - Jindřichův Hradec to Znojmo
On our 9th day of bikepacking across the Czech Republic, we leave Jindřichův Hradec on a historic train to Nová Bystřice. From there we try some new Czech pastries and visit the Landštejn Castle(Hrad Landštejn), and arrive in the town of Znojmo in what would be our longest day of riding.
We rode along the EuroVelo 13 and Prague Vienna Greenways bike path as well as these small roads #26, #5220 & #5007.

Jindřichův Hradec: Walking Through the Town & Around the Castle
Jindřichův Hradec is a beautiful small town in South Bohemia with almost 22.000 inhabitants. In summer, it is not as overcrowded with tourists as other Bohemian towns, but it offers the visitor some very special monuments. Apart from the Narrow Gauge Railway JHMD (see ), there is a splendid castle, the Gothic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the Church of Saint Catherine connected to the Franciscan monastery by a bridge called Little Monastery, the Holy Trinity sculpture in the centre of the Peace Square (Náměstí Míru) with surrounding Renaissance and Baroque buildings, the Museum of Photography in the buildings of the Jesuit College, and many more. Unfortunately, I had only a few hours for sightseeing. If you don't have much time, start to watch the video at 6:59 , it is its most atmospherical part, shot in the beginning dusk. :-)

Jindřichův Hradec (Neuhaus) ist eine schöne kleine Stadt in Südböhmen mit fast 22.000 Einwohnern. Im Sommer ist es nicht ganz so überfüllt mit Touristen wie andere böhmische Städte, dafür bietet es dem Besucher einige ganz besondere Sehenswürdigkeiten. Abgesehen von der Schmalspurbahn JHMD (siehe ) gibt es eine prächtige Burg, die gotische Kirche der Himmelfahrt Unserer Lieben Frau, der Kirche der heiligen Katharina, verbunden mit dem Franziskanerkloster durch eine Brücke, die Klösterchen genannt wird, die Skulptur der Heiligen Dreifaltigkeit in der Mitte des Marktplatzes (oder Platz des Friedens - Náměstí Míru) mit seinen umliegenden Renaissance- und Barockgebäuden, das Museum für Fotografie in den Gebäuden des ehemaligen Jesuitenkollegs, und vieles andere mehr. Falls du nicht viel Zeit hast, empfehle ich dir, das Video ab 6:59 zu gucken, das ist der atmosphärischste Teil, aufgenommen in dem Moment, als die Abenddämmerung einsetzte. :-)

Jindřichův Hradec es una pequeña ciudad hermosa en el sur de Bohemia, con casi 22.000 habitantes. En verano, no está tan llena de turistas como otras ciudades de Bohemia, pero ofrece al visitante algunos monumentos muy especiales. Aparte de la vía estrecha del tren JHMD (véase ) hay un castillo espléndido, la iglesia gótica de la Asunción de la Virgen María, la Iglesia de Santa Catalina, conectada al monasterio franciscano por un puente llamado monasterillo, la escultura de la Santísima Trinidad en el centro de la plaza de la Paz (Náměstí Míru) con sus edificios renacentistas y barrocos, el Museo de la Fotografía en los edificios del Colegio de los Jesuitas, y muchos más. Deafortunadamente sólo tuve muy pocas horas para hacer turismo allí. Si careces de mucho tiempo, te recomiendo empezar a ver el vídeo a partir de la posición en 6:59, es la parte más acogedora, grabada cuando el crepúsculo comenzaba. :-)

Jindřichův Hradec est une belle ville de Bohême du Sud avec près de 22.000 habitants. En été, elle n'est pas surpeuplée par les touristes comme les autres villes de Bohême, mais elle offre au visiteur quelques monuments très spéciaux. En dehors de la voie étroite des chemins de fer du JHMD, il y a un magnifique château, l'église gothique de l'Assomption de la Vierge Marie, l'Église de Saint Catherine relié au monastère franciscain par un pont appelé «petit monastère», la sculpture Sainte Trinité dans le centre de la place de la paix (Náměstí Míru) avec des édifices de la Renaissance et du Baroque, le Musée de la photographie dans les bâtiments de Collège des Jésuites, et beaucoup plus. Malheureusement, j'avais seulement quelques heures pour visiter la ville. Si vous ne disposez pas de beaucoup de temps, commencez à regarder la vidéo à 6:59, ça c'est sa partie la plus atmosphérique, tourné quand le crépuscule a commencé. :-)

Jindřichův Hradec je krásné městečko v jižních Čechách s téměř 22.000 obyvateli. V létě, to není tak přeplněné turisty jako ostatní českých městech, ale nabízí návštěvníkovi několik speciálních památek. Kromě úzkorozchodná železnice JHMD ( ), je nádherný zámek, gotický kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie, Kostel sv. Kateřiny připojen k františkánského kláštera mostem (klášteříček), sousoší Nejsvětější Trojice na náměstí Míru a okolních renesanční a barokní stavby, muzeum fotografie v budovách jezuitská kolej, a mnoho dalších. Bohužel, měl jsem jen pár hodin na okružní. Pokud nemáte moc času, začněte se dívat na video v 6:59, to je jeho nejvíce atraktivní část, střílel na začátku soumraku. :-)

Jindřichův Hradec 2018
Jindřichův Hradec (německy Neuhaus, latinsky Nova Domus) je město v Jihočeském kraji, 43 km severovýchodně od Českých Budějovic na řece Nežárka. Žije zde přibližně 21 tisíc obyvatel. Jeho historické jádro je městskou památkovou rezervací. Značnou část města tvoří rybník Vajgar o rozloze 49 ha. Dne 25. dubna 2018 bylo schváleno usnesením výboru pro vědu, vzdělání, kulturu, mládež a tělovýchovu udělení vlajky obce. Za první opevněné sídlo na území Jindřichova Hradce můžeme považovat pohraniční přemyslovské hradiště z 9. až 10. století. Na konci 12. století okolní region získal do sféry vlivu mocný rodu Vítkovců, z nějž se po smrti Vítka I. z Prčice oddělili páni z Hradce, kteří vlastnili zdejší panství až do roku 1604, kdy vymřeli po meči.
Kolem roku 1220 nechal první pán z Hradce, Jindřich, syn Vítka I. z Prčice, vystavět na základech starého slovanského hradiště nový gotický hrad, který nazval Nový hrad, nebo Nový dům (Nova domus) – odtud dodnes používané německé označení Neuhaus. Jméno hradu se brzy přeneslo i na vznikající tržní osadu v podhradí. Díky své strategické poloze mezi Prahou a Vídní zaznamenala tato osada v brzké době nebývalý vzestup. Roku 1255 byl v souvislosti s ní zmiňován panský rychtář, zajišťující chod městečka a dohlížející na provoz tržiště.
