10 Things Not to Do in Poland

There are an almost endless number of reasons to visit Poland. Poland is home to 14 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the food is incredible, and the history is gripping. It’s cheap, too. Of course, it’s possible to get into some trouble. If you want to keep the locals happy, and make sure you hit all the right hot spots, follow these NOT to do.
1. Don’t Check Your Inhibitions at the Door
Use good judgement, avoid poorer areas after dark, and think twice before you go home with any strangers. That being said, Poland still has a very low crime rate overall, so you should be safe.
2. Don’t Leave Without Checking the Weather
Obviously, the weather in Poland is different depending on the season, but you should be aware that the temperatures in the country can swing to the extremes with ease. Plan ahead. You’ve been warned.
3. Don’t Skip Dessert
Polish cuisine is pretty mouth-watering as a whole, but even if you don't indulge in the odd pastry or two, break that rule for Polish dessert. Every one of your senses will thank you.
4. Don’t Be a Jerk to the Locals
Lots of countries have a reputation for their friendly locals. The Poles take it to a new level. If you end up chatting with someone too long, you might find yourself invited over for dinner (which you probably shouldn’t pass up).
5. Don’t Forget About Krakow
You’ll probably fly into Warsaw, which can easily serve as a base of operations for your trip. Thanks to the city’s vibrant thrum, you can find yourself enamored for days. If you stick around the capital city, however, you’ll be missing out on storied Krakow, which is like a storybook village come to life.
6. Don’t Jaywalk
In some other countries, it might not be that big a deal to cross the street anywhere it seems convenient. In Poland, you might get slapped with a 500zł fine. If you want to shell out the $136 US to cover it, then cross the street freely. Otherwise, cross at the appointed intersections.
7. Don’t Forget that Pickpockets Are a Thing
In areas where a lot of tourists congregate, your odds increase that a pickpocket is lurking around. If you leave your goods unattended, they will get ripped off. Just keep a hand on your souvenirs and an eye on your wallet while you’re taking in Poland’s sights.
8. Don’t Travel in Unlicensed Taxis
If you’re in Krakow or Warsaw, make sure that you only catch a ride with taxis that display both the company name and the phone number on the top of the cab. You should also make sure the cabbie’s license number is displayed, that the meter works and it’s used.
9. Don’t Drink (Too Much)
You should absolutely check out the beers and vodkas that Poland has to offer, because they’re world class. Even better, craft beer has seen a huge resurgence in the country, which means there are different drinks in every corner of the country. Enjoy! But, you know, responsibly and stuff.
10. Don’t Leave Without Visiting at Least One UNESCO World Heritage Site
Krakow’s Historic Center. Auschwitz. Białowieza Forest. Warsaw’s Historic Center. The Medieval Town of Toruń. The Dual Churches of Peace in Jawor and Swidnica. Centennial Hall in Wrocław. The place has a lot of cherished history. So much so that you can only miss it if you’re actively trying.

Świdnica is a town that occupies the south-western part of Poland. The city is very often called the heart of Europe, which is also very closely related to its location - in the immediate vicinity of Świdnica there is the A4 motorway, which is an important element creating one of the European communication routes. When it comes to the geographical location of Świdnica, it is situated at the foot of the Sudetes and the Wałbrzyskie Mountains. It also covers the area of the Świdnica Plain. Świdnica is one of the largest cities in Lower Silesia (the city covers an area of approximately 21 square kilometers). Świdnica can pride itself on over 700 years of history. This historic city used to have a typical merchant character, it also served as one of the capitals of the former Duchy of Świdnica-Jawor.
The Old Town is considered to be the center of the whole Świdnica. Its areas began to take shape in the Middle Ages and in the following years it has undergone further transformations to the present day. What is the undeniable attraction of the whole city is the fact that both its center - the Old Town, and the outskirts are surrounded by as many as 11 beautiful and picturesque parks. Due to its geographic location, Świdnica is undoubtedly an important tourist center, visited by many visitors from various parts of Poland. In addition to its geographical values, the city can also boast some objects that make its visit a real paradise for many tourists. When talking about the monuments of Świdnica, it is necessary to mention some sacred buildings, which are very important in this city. One of such buildings is certainly the Church of Peace under the invocation of the Holy Trinity, which not only plays a significant role in Świdnica - it is also considered the most valuable sacred building related to the Protestant art of the entire Silesia. It is also a building that can boast of being the largest wooden church in the entire European continent. This sacred building is closely related to the Thirty Years' War, or rather its end, during which it was decided to build a church. Another extremely fascinating sacred building in Świdnica, which is visited by many tourists with great enthusiasm, is the cathedral of Saint Stanislaus and Wenceslaus. This monument also stands out in a special way both in Silesia and the whole country. It is the cathedral tower, which ranks third in terms of height in Poland, and it is the second among the buildings in Silesia.
While in Świdnica, it is impossible not to go, of course, in the direction of the famous Old Town, where the Świdnica market and the town hall are located. The unusual ornament of the market square, which is another considerable attraction for tourists, is a group of sculptures, which is the work of a local artist - Georg Weber. There are many more interesting objects in Świdnica that tell about the history, tradition and culture of this city.

Miércoles 07/08/19
Salimos de Bautzen sobre las 09:15 y tomamos camino hacia Jawor.
Llegamos sobre las 10:50 a la Iglesia de la Paz, que es el primer lugar de Polonia que vamos a visitar.
Jawor cuenta con una de las tres iglesias que los protestantes luteranos construyeron en las zonas católicas de la región de Silesia gracias al Tratado de Westfalia (siglo XVII). Debían hacerlas de madera, sin utilizar clavos, y en el plazo de un año. Un incendio destruyó la de Głogów un siglo después. Las iglesias evangélicas de la Paz de Jawor, en la Baja Silesia, a unos 60 kilómetros de Breslavia, es, junto con la de Świdnica, patrimonio mundial. Es una iglesia de madera pintada que por dentro parece un teatro.
Nada más llegar pagamos la entrada 2,5 € por persona y nos ponen en los altavoces de toda la Iglesia la explicación en español lo cual se agradece bastante, nos ha gustado mucho porque nunca habíamos visto una iglesia igual que esta y deseando estamos que llegue el día de ver la otra que queda en pie.
Acabamos la visita sobre las 11:55 y partimos hacia Krzeszów.
Al llegar a su parking, un fornido y rubio polaco con su bici y un chaleco reflectante, viene a vernos para que le paguemos el ticket del parking, además nos ha permitido hacerlo en euros con una bonita sonrisa: 4€.
La antigua Abadía de Grüssau, hoy en día se conoce como la abadía de Krzeszów, es una de las reliquias más valiosas de la arquitectura barroca en Europa y patrimonio nacional polaco.
Hacemos un recorrido con audio-guías por la iglesia de San José, la de María Magdalena, el cementerio, el Mausoleo y la propia basílica de Nuestra señora de Gracia… que es una autentica pasada barroca!!
A Claudia la hemos tenido que tapar hombros y piernas... Entrada 54 Zloty.
La basílica cuenta con un altar precioso y un órgano espectacular, al cual hemos subido y donde el señor que lo toca habitualmente, nos ha dejado subir a ver los entresijos de la maquinaria y tubos del mismo.
Ha sido muy simpático con nosotros y ha querido hacerse fotos junto a nosotros como recuerdo… hasta ha dicho viva España y viva el Real Madrid! Después nos ha regalado un póster.
A continuación cruzamos la calle para ir a un restaurante a comer de unas hamburguesas súper ricas y baratas menos mal que el hijo del dueño hablaba inglés porque la carta no había quién la entendiera.
Los 5 hemos comido por 127 Zlotys (unos 30€ aproximadamente).
Después tomamos el postre en un sitio de helados con una polaca muy guapa pero que no sabía otro idioma que el suyo.... Nos hemos reído mucho porque Magdalena solo quería un café con hielo y al final le han hecho un Ice coffee que era una Copa de helado enorme llena de todo tipo de ingredientes!!
Sobre las 16:30 hemos salido hacia nuestro siguiente destino Kłodzko, a donde hemos llegado sobre las17:55.
Administrativamente, Kłodzko forma parte de Silesia, pero cultural y tradicionalmente es Bohemia. Y así, con el corazón dividido, transita esta pequeña Praga, como a veces se la denomina, principal nudo comercial, de transportes y cultural al suroeste de Polonia.
También de interés turístico, con reclamos como su puente gótico, llamado el puente de Carlos en miniatura” como referencia al de Praga; la iglesia de la Asunción del XIV, o la red de túneles subterráneos construidos a partir del siglo XIII y abiertos, en parte, al público.
Hay que decir que llegamos con el chófer muerto de hambre y de sueño (recordemos que la noche anterior en Bautzen no nos dejaron dormir mucho) entonces no disfrutamos tanto el lugar.
Aparte que ya era tarde y los túneles subterráneos que nos hacía ilusión visitar, estaban cerrados y la subida al castillo también, así que simplemente dimos un paseo y a las 19 horas partimos de Kłodzko.
Igual es un sitio que no hace falta ir a posta. Al terminar el paseo nos hemos parado en un centro comercial para hacer un poco de compra, para poner gasoil y finalmente para comprar algo de comida en el Kentucky Fried Chicken porque a los niños les apetecía.
De aquí hemos salido cerca de las 22 horas hacia Ladek-Zdrój a donde hemos llegado sobre las 22:30, como el área no tenía servicios hemos parado en una explanada entre el centro y el cementerio bastante tranquila.
