22-10-2023 - Parramatta Transportfest Part 2
For the first time in over two decades, I have had reason to head to Parramatta, not just once, but twice.
The opportunity was taken to get some coverage of the transport scene, not only just around Parramatta, but also the journey to and from.
This first episode covers the journey from Central to Parramatta, which makes an interesting comparison to our earlier 1986 video that covered from Clyde to Central.
The series will cover both rail and bus action, including a good proportion of old K and V sets, amongst less interesting guff.
Part 2 will cover the buses seen on the first visit.
Subsequent parts will cover the second visit, including a good number of K sets.

The Picnic Train 5917 is rare survivor of the golden era of travel when steam ruled the rails. Locomotive 5917 was built by Baldwin (USA) in the 1950s for the NSW Government Railways.
It was shipped to Australia as one of 20 in the class. Originally built as an oil burner the loco had been converted to coal and was primarily used for freight duties, finishing its government career as a banking locomotive based at Bathurst. This former freight locomotive is often seen on tour trains in the Hunter Valley, Kiama and further afield. It is one of five survivors and the only locomotive still operational.

The 48 Class is a class of diesel locomotives built by AE Goodwin, Auburn for the New South Wales Department of Railways between 1959 and 1970. Once the most ubiquitous locomotive in New South Wales, Australia, It is based on Alco frames and prime movers, using General Electric (later Associated Electrical Industries) electrical equipment. The South Australian Railways 830 and Silverton Rail 48s classes are of a very similar design. 4807 entered service with the NSWGR on 19-11-1959 and was withdrawn by Freightcorp in the Freightcorp Blue scheme on 10-9-1994.
After years of preservation at the Junee Roundhouse, the loco was transferred to ARHS Canberra in 2002 and repainted into the original Indian Red Scheme. Later the loco was transerred to the care of the Rail Transport Museum at Thirlmere

SFF347: FLEMINGS FOOD STORES FAREWELL 19-5-2020
On May 19th, New South Wales retail history was created when the final 'Flemings Food Store' closed down.
The history of Flemings goes back 90 years, when the Fleming family set up their first supermarkets in suburban Sydney. At their height, they had around 100 stores.
In 1960, Woolworths brought out their 55 stores, but continued using the name for many years.
The 1980s saw a decision made to wind up the name. Bigger/busier stores would become 'Food For Less', but other smaller stores would all just disappear.
This was the period when I came into the company and, seeing the shops drop, lead to my taking photos of stores and later developing an interest in the history.
Incredibly, the name beat the odds, outlasted the 'Food For Less' chain that was to replace it, and lasted until 2020.
But time finally caught up and the doors closed at 9pm, thus bringing 90 years of Fleming family retail history to an end.
We were there for the final hour.
