Jalandhar part 2

Jalandhar (also called Jullundur) is a city in the Indian state of Punjab. Jalandhar lies alongside the Grand Trunk Road and is a well-connected rail and road junction. Jalandhar is 146 km northwest of Chandigarh, the state capital of Punjab and Haryana and 82.5 km (51.2 mi) South-East of Amritsar. Jullundur was the common English spelling during Company rule in India and the British Raj.

The history of Jalandhar District comprises three periods — ancient, medieval and modern.

The city may be named after Jalandhara, a demon king, who is named in the Puranas and Mahabharata. The city was founded by Devasya Verma as mentioned in Vedas . Other possibilities include that it was the capital of the kingdom of Lava, son of Rama or that the name derives from the vernacular term Jalandhar, meaning area inside the water, i.e., tract lying between the two rivers Satluj and Beas. The whole of Punjab and the area of present Jalandhar District was part of the Indus Valley Civilization. Harappa and Mohenjo-daro are the sites where remains of the Indus Valley Civilization have been found extensively. The archaeological explorations made during recent years have pushed the ancient times of Jalandhar District of Harappa period.

Jalandhar was conquered by the Ghaznavids during the reign of Ibrahim of Ghazni between 1058 and 1089.[8] It later formed part of the province of Lahore during the Delhi Sultanate and Mughal Empire. The 18th century saw upheaval in Jalandhar amidst an anarchy caused by the disintegration of the Mughals and power struggles involving Persians, Afghans and Sikhs. It was captured by the Faizullahpuria Misl in 1766, and in 1811 Ranjit Singh incorporated it within the Sikh Empire.

In 1849, following the annexation of the Punjab by the East India Company, the city of Jalandhar, written in English as Jullundur by Company officials, became the headquarters of the Division and District of the same name. In 1858 Company rule in India ended and the city became part of the British Raj. In the mid to late 19th century, the Punjab administration regarded Jullundur as too densely populated and farmed to capacity. This led to the district being a chief recruitment area for settlers to colonise the newly irrigated Punjab Canal Colonies in western Punjab.

The Khilafat Movement started in the district in early 1920 to bring pressure on the government to change their policy towards Turkey. Mahatma Gandhi extended sympathy and support to this movement however in response the District was declared a 'Proclaimed Area' under the Seditious Meetings Act. In 1924, Pakistani general and military dictator Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq was born in the city.

The Partition of India in 1947 saw Jalandhar become part of the new dominion of India. The resulting rioting and violence caused by Partition led to major demographic change in the district, with the exodus of the large Muslim population and the arrival of Hindus and Sikhs from newly created Pakistan

Full Rangla Punjab Haveli Tour, Jalandhar 4K

Haveli is located on busy highway eatery on the outskirts of Jalandhar city that attracts over 300 people an hour - or 7,000 every day!

Clients savour everything Indian, from makki di roti and sarson-da-saag to dal tadka to sleep-inducing lassi at Haveli, a private enterprise offering five-star comforts that has changed the way people look at roadside dhaba culture.

What's more, in a state where butter chicken and tandoori chicken find undisputed favour, the eatery has succeeded by serving only vegetarian food cooked in desi ghee.

It took Haveli owner Satish Jain, 39, just a bit of enterprise and a calculated risk in 2002 to tickle the Punjabi palate and create a brand name even as thousands of dhabas line up the highways and roads.

Haveli, which means a big, traditional bungalow, is not about 24x7 food alone. Located on one of the busiest roads in Punjab - the Ludhiana-Jalandhar-Amritsar national highway (NH) 1 - it is an example of the rich and even flamboyant Punjabi tradition and culture.

Right from the actual Tata truck parked inside the air-conditioned expanse of the restaurant here to traditional household items, agricultural tools and other simple things found in villages - the décor of Haveli takes people on a virtual tour through the heart of Punjab.

As if that is not enough, another section of the sprawling 23-acre complex, Rangla Punjab, is an even better depiction of the state's rich culture and tradition.

This section is a mini-village in itself with small shops offering drinking water to 'jyotshi' (astrologer) services, a wooden wheel, a chaupal, a stage for an evening show and even a bio-scope to attract visitors.

All buildings in the Haveli complex are built from the traditional nanakshahi bricks (small tiled bricks which are linked to the first Sikh guru, Nanak Dev), which were accumulated by Jain and his team from villages across Punjab. Some of the bricks used here are said to be nearly 100 years old.

It is not only the traditional ambience of the place but the distinct cleanliness and discipline that make it an attraction for motorists along the highway.

The restaurant is a mix and match of regular chairs and the more comfortable 'manjas' (rope cots) with round pillows. There are 'pidis' (small stools) as well. The walls and corners of the restaurant are adorned with traditional kites and colourful 'dors', 'pankhis' (hand-held fans), swords, shields, phulkari wall hangings and 'chulhas' (earthen stoves).

Food is served in traditional plates called 'thalis' while lassi comes in big brass glasses.

Buoyed by the success of this enterprise, the Haveli group is setting up two similar ventures along NH-1 at Karnal in Haryana and Rajpura in Punjab.

Besides the main Haveli restaurant and Rangla Punjab, the complex offers a fort-theme based banquet that can accommodate nearly 3,000 people in its covered and open areas.

A Kapurthala town based non-resident Indian (NRI) groom flew into the banquet two years ago in a helicopter to take home his bride after their wedding here.

The nearly 500 staff members include traditional 'maharaj' cooks and waiters dressed in typical Punjabi lungi, kurta and half-jackets. They appear Punjabi but are drawn from all over India and even Nepal. The staff comes from Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and even Karnataka.

It is not only the variety of vegetarian food available here that attracts people, especially the NRIs, but also the low price of the items.

This dessert can be served warm or cold. They have a somewhat chewy texture with a crystallized sugary exterior coating. Citric acid or lime juice is sometimes added to the syrup, as well as rose water. Jalebi is eaten with curd or rabri (North India) along with optional other flavours such as kewra (scented water).

This dish is not to be confused with similar sweets and variants like imarti and chhena jalebi. In India many people consider jalebi as their national sweet. But it is not authorised by the Government Of India yet.

After the gratifying evening food tour, the next day we embarked on a day tour with our gracious host Naina ( We were very excited as we were going to explore some old eateries in the old city that have been established by partition affected migrants from Pakistan. This food tour was really special for all the heartwarming stories of the vendors.
Our first destination was Dilbagh Sweets in Adarsh Nagar. They are considered to be the most renowned place for this crisp and flaky besan based sweet that is a close cousin of soan papdi. Here we tried the desi ghee one and the vanilla one. The classic desi ghee one was simply amazing.
From there we went to Dina Nath Chole Kulche Wale at Gurdev Nagar. Their boiled chickpea based chole kulche was truly irresistible.
After those really light yet delicious chole kulche we went to Gurjanwala at Mitha Bazar for their signature dish katlama karah which was a nice combination of crisp flaky flatbread and sooji halwa. But it was their other dish, the puri chole that won our heart.
Next we went to King kulfi at Jyoti Chowk to try a classic kulfi that has been bringing smiles on the face of people since the past 80 plus years. It was a decent saffron and pistachio infused frozen dessert.
Thereafter intrigued by a shining huge cauldron we checked into a nondescript dhaba named Kashyap Rajput Vaishno Dhaba. Here we met the agile and endearing 80 years old gentleman Madan ji who briefed us about the place and his daily tasks. We were greatly inspired by his passion at such an age. Here we tried a slow cooked mah ki dal with lachha parantha. The meal was very basic yet hearty.
While the dal was on boil at Kashyap's we had sneaked out to Yoga Halwai right on the opposite lane to taste their famous peda and lassi.
Next stop was Sodhi Jalebi Corner at Jatpura. They are known for dal wali jalebi's. The moong dal and maida based treat was quite relishing.
With a sweet aftertaste we headed to Satnamiya Parotha Junction at Canal Road to try their super fascinating and colourful paper parontha. These were actually thin and soft fenugreek and beetroot flavoured Parotha. We had paired it with a toothsome shahi paneer.
We ended the tour with the chilled glass of banta soda from Pahwa Kulfi House in Model town.
