The history of Hungary. Hungary documentary. World Of Knowledge

Hungary is a country in Central Europe.

It borders Slovakia to the north, Ukraine to the northeast, Romania to the east and southeast, Serbia to the south, Croatia and Slovenia to the southwest, and Austria to the west.

Hungary covers an area of 93,030 square kilometres in the Carpathian Basin, with a population of 10 million.

Hungarian, the official language, is the world's most widely spoken Uralic language, and among the few non-Indo-European languages widely spoken in Europe.

Budapest is the country's capital and largest city; other major urban areas include Debrecen, Szeged, Miskolc, Pécs, and Győr.

The territory of present-day Hungary was for centuries inhabited by various peoples, including Celts, Romans, Germanic tribes, Huns, West Slavs and the Avars.

The foundations of the Hungarian state were established in the late ninth century AD with the conquest of the Carpathian Basin by Hungarian grand prince Árpád.

His great-grandson Stephen I ascended the throne in 1000, converting his realm to a Christian kingdom.

By the 12th century, Hungary became a regional power, reaching its cultural and political height in the 15th century.

Following the Battle of Mohács in 1526, it was partially occupied by the Ottoman Empire .

Hungary came under Habsburg rule at the turn of the 18th century, later joining with the Austrian Empire to form Austria-Hungary, a major power into the early 20th century

Austria-Hungary collapsed after World War I, and the subsequent Treaty of Trianon established Hungary's current borders, resulting in the loss of 71% of its territory, 58% of its population, and 32% of ethnic Hungarians.

Reformed Great Church of Debrecen | Debrecen | Hungary | Things To Do In Debrecen

Reformed Great Church of Debrecen | Debrecen | Hungary | Things To Do In Debrecen

One of the most memorable travel experiences in Debrecen, Hungary, is a visit to the Reformed Great Church (Nagytemplom). Dominating the cityscape with its twin spires reaching for the skies, this majestic church encapsulates the spirit of Debrecen and the religious history of Hungary.

Situated in the heart of the city, the Reformed Great Church is not only a symbol of faith but also a beacon of Debrecen's cultural heritage. Being the largest Protestant church in Hungary, it serves as a reminder of the city's title as the Calvinist Rome, highlighting Debrecen's significant role in the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century.

As you approach the Reformed Great Church, the grandeur of its architecture is immediately striking. The classicist-style building, crowned with two iconic towers, exudes a sense of awe-inspiring reverence. This is a church that has not only witnessed centuries of history but also actively shaped it.

Inside, the church reveals an austere yet profoundly beautiful interior. The wide, white-washed nave, coupled with the church's signature wooden pews and pulpit, create an atmosphere of peaceful solemnity. The simplicity of the design is a testament to the Protestant tradition of focusing on the word of God rather than religious iconography.

One of the highlights of the church is its magnificent pipe organ, one of the largest in Hungary. The sound of this majestic instrument during services or concerts fills the space with an immersive melody that must be experienced to be truly appreciated.

A unique feature of the Reformed Great Church is its panorama room situated in one of the towers. A climb up the spiralling staircase rewards you with an unparalleled view of Debrecen and its surrounding landscapes. From this vantage point, you can appreciate the vibrant city's mix of historical and modern architecture nestled amidst the serene Hungarian plains.

The church also holds a significant collection of religious artefacts. This includes historic Bibles, a silver Communion set from the 17th century, and a replica of the Debrecen Bible - the first complete Bible translation in Hungarian.

Visiting the Reformed Great Church offers more than just a religious experience. It provides a unique perspective into the history, culture, and identity of Debrecen. Whether you're interested in history, architecture, religion, or simply looking to experience something unique, the church is a must-visit attraction.

Finally, the Reformed Great Church isn't just a standalone attraction. It's situated in Kossuth Square, a vibrant hub of activity in Debrecen. Here, you'll find local cafés, bustling markets, and the historic Debrecen University, making it a fantastic starting point to explore the rest of the city.

When you're crafting your Debrecen travel itinerary, ensure this extraordinary landmark is at the top of your list. This is an experience that beautifully blends religious reverence, architectural grandeur, and historical significance – and it's waiting to be discovered by you.

Szörnyű szélvihar Szegeden (2019 szeptembere)

Szegeden szeptember 9. délutánján hatalmas szélvihar tombolt. A nagy erősségű szél délután 3 körül hirtelen, minden előjel nélkül kezdődött, melynek következtében néhány hatalmas faág leszakadt a Széchenyi téren, az egyik pont a padon ülők fejére esett.
