The Petersburger is a special creature, and there are features that distinguish him from the ordinary population of the country. Here is a different time, space, sunshine and townspeople. Among the native Petersburgers, there are many people from aristocratic families, their habits are inherited, formed over the years and generations, and have grown into genetics. He hates and never uses the word Peter (since this is the word of the proletarian outskirts). We must say St. Petersburg. He always has chronic rhinitis. Prefers beer - vodka, port. Beer is a drink of ordinary people. Likes to save up in order to buy the most expensive cigarettes later, collectible, something impractical for the soul. For all his delicacy, he has a pronounced sense of humor, sarcasm, he can very delicately, and if necessary, abruptly put someone in their place, without being embarrassed by swearing, profanity, which he naturally uses, to the point and with great grace.

Ivangorod fortress is a medieval castle in Ivangorod, Leningrad Oblast, Russia. It is located on the Narva River along the Russian border with Estonia, across from the Estonian city of Narva.
Ivangorod Fortress was established by Ivan III in 1492, intended to reaffirm Muscovy's right to access the Baltic Sea and to form a bulwark against the Teutonic Order, being built opposite the powerful Teutonic Hermann Castle.
For almost 10 years, the land around the castle was in constant warfare. The fortress and the land around changed hands repeatedly. The castle was reconstructed and fortified many times, becoming one of the strongest defensive structures in the 16th century. The castle was in development until the 17th century, becoming a large, sprawling fortress with several lines of defence.
In 1612, the Swedes conquered the fortress. In 1704, Peter the Great captured the castle from Swedish troops, bringing the fortress back into Russian control. After the early 18th century, the military role of the fortress became obsolete due to improvements in warfare.
In 1840, some improvements were carried out in the fortress (roofs were renewed), and further improvements took place in 1863 and 1911-1914. During World War I, the fortress was captured by the Germans on 25 February 1918.
From 1919 to 1940, the fortress belonged to Estonia becoming part of the town of Narva...
After the annexation of Estonia by the Soviet Union in 1940, the Ivangorod fortress was part of the USSR. The town and fortress remained with Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the restoration of the independent Republic of Estonia in 1990. Currently, the fortress serves as a museum......

Top five Visiting Places in Estonia

Located in Northern Europe, Estonia is a largely underrated gem. In addition to being affordable for travelers, Estonia boasts medieval cities, scenic coastlines and a fascinating history.
Narva Castle
The city of Narva is the easternmost destination in the country, not to mention the entire European Union. The city was heavily bombed during World War II, but thankfully the beautiful and historic Narva Castle still stands. The castle, which is also known as Hermann Castle, was built in the 13th century but the Danes as a residence for the Danish King’s vice-Regent. Inside the castle is the Narva Museum as well as a collection of handicrafts workshops where you can watch and even learn the skills used in medieval times. The castle tower overlooks the Ivangorod castle on the Russian side of the river.
Soomaa National Park
Soomaa National Park is a fascinating destination. Primarily a peat bog formed as a result of glacier melt from more than 10,000 years ago, Soomaa National Park is cut by several beautiful rivers. The best way to explore Soomaa is with a canoe. You rent canoes or join a self-guided tour, and as you paddle you’ll be able to spot deer, elk, boars, beavers, golden eagles and more. Canoeing is especially popular in the spring, or what locals call the fifth season. During this time of year, water levels rise substantially, and boats are sometimes the only way to get around.
Hiiumaa
When most people picture Estonia, they don’t picture islands. However, Hiiumaa is just one of several islands off the coast and in the Baltic Sea. To reach Hiiumaa, you can take a plane from Tallinn or a ferry from multiple coastal cities on the mainland. Equally loved by surfers, sailors, and hikers, Hiiumaa is great place to visit for those looking for peace and quiet.
Saaremaa
The largest Estonian island is called Saaremaa, and it is located in the Baltic Sea. The island has an 8,000-year-old history, and was ruled by Danes, Swedes, Germans and Russians in that time. Today, most visitors spend their time in the island’s capital city of Kuressaare.
Tallinn
The most popular place to visit in Estonia is Tallinn, the capital and the hub of medieval architecture. The heart of the city is called Toompea, a hill that retains a historic atmosphere thanks to cobblestone streets and 15th century buildings.

NARVA The Estonian town on the RUSSIAN BORDER CROSSING!

Narva The Estonian town on the Russian border crossing

In this video we finally make it to explore the Estonian town of Narva which is the border town with Russia. We heard a lot about the town but we wanted to go and check it out for ourselves. It was incredible to see the two castles on either side of the dividing Narva river one in Estonia and one in Russia. We couldn’t believe how close they were and yet we’re not able to cross that border without a visa (which we did already back in March and getting a visa to Russia is not easy!)

We explore the town of Narva and although it is an Estonian town we definitely noticed a more Russian look within the buildings around us such as the Alexander Cathedral which was built and named after the Russian Emperor Alexander II and the The cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ being a Russian Orthodox church. We also noticed the residential buildings resembled many of the large soviet blocks we have seen in other places around former Soviet occupied areas and struggled to find any of the more traditional Estonian style houses that we have seen along our Estonian road trip.

Narva has some fascinating history and we were really hoping to go inside the castle courtyard as it is usually open to the public but there was a festival/concert going on inside so we couldn’t go in, we were kind of intrigued to see the statue of Lenin and the view across to Ivangorod the castle across the Narva river over on the Russian side, but we were able to view from just beyond the entrance.

We really enjoyed walking around in the sunshine and taking in the sights of this unique border town but there was one or two things that we definitely didn’t love about it.

Ivangorod

Fortress in Ivangorod (Russia) and river Narva.

2 Days in an Estonian City on the Russian Border - Day 1

Visiting Narva which is on the border between Estonia and Russia. The border runs along the river which separates Estonian Narva from Russian Ivangorod. The population of Narva is around 97% Russian-speaking and the the county which Narva is part of is one of the poorest in Estonia. What's it like in the country's far east? What is there to see and is it as bad as many people make out? Day one involved walking the streets, hiding from the rain, witnessing the river border and those crossing along the bridge and eating a burger at the (probably) easternmost McDonald's in the European Union.
