The Reality of Life in Russia 2023 (bureaucratic nightmare)

This is our life in Russia in late 2022 / 2023. Traveling to Russia as a westerner has always been difficult, a bureaucratic nightmare, but this year is the first time Matt and I have really had any issues. We arrived in my hometown of Kemerovo, Siberia, after crossing in to Russia at Kaliningrad and flying to Novosibirsk. Once here and staying with my family, we went to register with the local authorities, but everything turned out to be a little complicated to say the least. This is a week in our lives here staying in Siberia as we hang out with my family and prepare for New years eve (the biggest celebration of the year in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and many other former Soviet countries). Welcome to a very cold, wintery Siberia.

St Petersburg ???????? The City That Changed The World Forever...

St Petersburg, the city that changed the history of the World. In 1917, amid the backdrop of the brutal first world war, Russia fell in to crisis, the Tsar fell, the empire collapsed and the people of Saint Petersburg (Petrograd) rose up. This is the story of the Russian Revolutions of 1905 & 1917, some of the most seismic events in recent World history. The Socialist Revolution in Saint Petersburg slightly over 100 years ago changed the course of history & is still having a profound affect on the world today.

This is the story of the Revolutions through the eyes of a local - Aleksander. You can find his incredible tours here:

THE SIGHT & THE SOUND 1/2 : Last flight of Air Via TU-154M LZ-MIL from Dusseldorf (DUS) to Varna

Daniel’s Travel Log

I had different plans.

The original plan was to fly onboard Belavia's AN-24 from Berlin to Minsk together with Henry Tenby from Vancouver on the last weekend of October, 2005 taping the flight on video and writing an article about Belavia.

Security was tight in Belarus and permissions were needed and not an enthusiast’s friendly spot back in 2005.

Working myself through a difficult process up to the Top of Belavia, obtaining the necessary permissions, it was finally “Mission achieved”, and Henry and I were ready to go.

However Belavia revoked the granted permission to make pictures on board their AN-24 in the last minute for no reason.

At the same time it came to my ears, that Air Via was replacing their Tupolevs with A320s at the end of October at an alarming speed and that the last flights on TU-154M were scheduled to be operated on the weekend ahead.

Changing plans in Germany on short notice is not easy, especially not on a Friday.

My passport was lying at the Belarus Embassy in Berlin with a no longer required visa and tickets on Air Via could not be purchased through the internet, only through travel agent channels at TUI in Hannover.

All seats on board of Air Via were sold and marketed through travel agents, Air Via provided plane and crew but did not sell seats.

Getting a last minute air ticket on a Friday in Germany on TUI through normal channels was simply impossible !

The weekend planning for charter flights was finished and TUI was not able nor willing to issue any tickets on their contingent through ordinary channels and time was running out.

It was a Friday in Germany and people stop working around noon.

It took a half a day of phone calls to the headquarter of Air Via in Sofia in order to connect to the top management of TUI in Hannover to help me getting on board of two empty flights !

Making a long story short, Air Via managed to get me on board through top management intervention for 50 Euros and I spent the next Saturday flying from Frankfurt to Berlin to pick up my passport from security personnel at the Belarus Embassy.

Sunday morning, October 30, 2005 rewarded me with perfect flying weather in Dusseldorf and unbelievable VIP treatment by the Chief Pilot of Air Via, Atanas Vitkov.

The plane was mine for the next two and a half hours !

The few passengers were reseated to the forward section and I had the rear section entirely for myself.

A spectacular flat-angle take off and a spectacular and very turbulent landing over the city center of Varna commemorated the final flight of a Air Via TU-154M from Dusseldorf.

I taped this and the return flight on the following morning with newest HD camera equipment available back in 2005.
It may well be possible, that these footages are the only footages of Air Via's Tupolev to be taped in detail and published in HD quality.

Unfortunately I did not realize that my new external microphone was bumping against the wall creating these terrible squeeking sounds during take off and landing.

I needed weeks to edit this video cutting it into hundreds of small puzzle pieces in order to remove the worst squeeking parts during the taxi and take off scenes and reassemble the remaining puzzle parts without disrupting the story. This is the remastered and improved result !

Welcome on board Air Via’s final flight onboard TU-154M LZ-MIL out of Dusseldorf on October 30, 2005.

Provando COMIDA SOVIÉTICA com MORADORES LOCAIS na TRANSNISTRIA

Love between us | Unforgettable summer and romance | Vast expanses of Belarus

Belarus is located in between Russia and Poland. Its nature is still untouched and authentic, one third of Belarus territory is covered by forests. Belarussian landscapes will open for you the nature of Europe as it once was. Belarus is a country of thousands crystal-clear lakes and many rivers.
Belarus can be translated from russian as White Russia — a tender and poetic name perfectly reflecting the spirit of the country and people. The russian word Belaya means light, clean, innocent. However, Belarus does not adhere to the the bright colors of Mediterranean. It does not possess the expressing exoticism of Africa or thin slyness of the Middle-East either.
Its quiet charm is appearing gradually: in the soft tints of morning sky above the softly blured line of horizon; in the green of those fields freely stretching along miles; in the stimulating aroma of pine forest; in the sadness of crane's cry. The slipping-off beauty of Belarus will be opened to those, who are capable to stop and perceive the surrounding world. Just look into the deep eyes of Belarus' — dark-blue lakes, just put your hands into the cool water of merry stream, and hide from the warm shower under the green paw of a fir tree...
Surprising thing: it seems that here, in the very heart of Europe, the time slowed down its run. Albeit all around the world the XXI century is running, the civilization advances by huge steps, in Belarus, nature remains natural, people — humane, and old human values — eternal.
Through centuries, Belarus was conquered many times, but itself was never a conqueror. Belorussians were changing their faith, accepting stranger's cultures and languages, in order to assimilate with other peoples. However, in spite of all this, Belarus did not loose its national identity. Basic distinctive features of Belorussian people — tolerance and ability to understand mentality of other cultures. Belorussians always was proud of the fact that in their country there were no pursuits after religious or national identity. Tolerance and great feeling of humor distinguish Belorussian people. Traveling on Belarus, do not hesitate to ask for help and we assure you that you will get sincere support in any corner of the country.

I got my Russia Tourist Visa TWICE!! Being REJECTED & SUCCEEDING!! Traps + Tips to APPLY CORRECTLY!!

I was rejected TWICE for the Russia Visa in 2015 and nearly AGAIN this year due to errors in the application which they are very picky about. Here are suggestions and tips from my experience.

I got my Russia Tourist Visa TWICE!! Being REJECTED & SUCCEEDING!! Traps + Tips to APPLY CORRECTLY!!

#1) They want an itemized 10 year travel history to match all the stamps in your passport. If you went to a country more than once you must list it every time you went there.

#2) They wanted a stamp from the hotel in Russia even though I had an online booking. I had to call Expedia and tell them to charge my card then show a statement printout to the Embassy

#3) I had a late night flight arrival at 1.00am so had to book the hotel from the date before. On the application I used the date of the flight for when I actually enter Russia and this did not match my hotel booking. So I had to amend it to a day before even though I didnt arrive in Russia till the next day.

As well they want proof of medical coverage so I had to get a summary of coverage statement from my employers health benefits provider.

I used the Visa Application Centre in Toronto and they were able to help me thru this
