Mt. Ugo Itogon Benguet Philippines | Beginners Friendly Hike | Travel Philippines

Mt. Ugo Itogon Benguet Philippines | Beginners Friendly Hike | Travel Philippines

Mt. Ugo, also sometimes referred to as Mt. Ugu, is considered as one of the most popular destinations in the Cordillera region. Unlike its neighbors, Mt. Pulag and Mt. Napulauan, Mt. Ugo has a lower elevation. Nevertheless, the mountain is at par with its neighbors when it comes to showcasing the beauty of nature. It boasts of enchanting forests that is home to tall pine trees and it also offers equally breath-taking views.

In the year 1987, an airplane of the Philippine Airlines crashed onto one of Mt. Ugo’s slopes that eventually led to the site’s discovery as an ideal place for hiking. From the date of its discovery, many mountain climbers have gone to explore the wonders that this traverse offers. This trail crosses two provinces, namely Nueva Vizcaya and Benguet. Mountaineerswill definitely have an unforgettable experience during this trip, especially once they interact with the locals.

Many adventure-seekers have proven that Mt. Ugo is definitely a great hiking destination. In terms of difficulty, the Mt. Ugo trail can be rated as moderately challenging. The allotted duration for this trip is two days.

MT. UGO (2,150+)
Nueva Vizcaya and Benguet
Jump-off points: Kayapa, N. Vizcaya; Brgy. Tinongdan, Itogon, Benguet
LLA: 16.31916°N, 120.80166°E, 2130 MASL
Days required / hours to summit: 2-3 days, 9-10 hrs
Specs: Major climb, Difficulty 5/9, Trail Class 1-3
Features: Pine forests, highland villages, views of Cordillera peaks

SPECIAL CONCERNS
Active in promoting tourism and managing Mt. Ugu as a hiking destination is Ma’am Liza Diase, tourism officer of Itogon. She may be contacted through following numbers: +639167445628 or +639105482678. She can help you charter a jeepney and arrange guides.

A jeepney can fetch you in Lusod, on the waiting shed; however, if the roads are muddy during the rainy season, the jeep may not be able to go all the way to the end of the trail; you have to walk further down. Although there are steep parts, the trails of Mt. Ugo are generally benign. There are basic facilities in the villages (i.e. CRs, faucets) but electricity is non-existent in these distant parts. As for water sources, the villages have them but none in the summit. Cellphone signal is present in the summit and parts of the trail.

TRIVIA
Iowak and Kalanguya tribes inhabit Mt. Ugo whereas Ibalois in general are the major ethnic group of Itogon. The main livelihood is mining; this is evidenced by the mines such as the Balatoc gold mines. Logging was also a major industry, nearby nearly denuding the mountain. The old saw mill is but a remnant of this past- in which, allegedly, cable systems transported wood down the mountain.

An interesting feature of the Mt. Ugo trails is the wooden gates that you have to open and close. Perhaps this has something to do with the cows which use the sloped grasslands as their grazing area.

Wild berries, called dusong (Vaccinium barandanum) grow in Mt. Ugo. More interestingly, a land crab (probably Cardisoma sp.) was spotted on the forests of Mt. Ugo! This was reported in 2007 by Sir Emman Palacio and his team. If confirmed, this is a great biological find! - pinoymountaineer

BEST MOUNTAIN TO CLIMB THIS SUMMER - MT. ULAP, ITOGON BENGUET PHILIPPINES

MT. ULAP ECO-TRAIL

Itogon, Benguet
Entry point: Brgy. Ampucao, Itogon
Exit point: Brgy. Sta. Fe, Itogon
LLA: 16.2904 N, 120.6312 E, 1846 MASL (Mt. Ulap)
Days required / Hours to summit: 1 day / 2-3 hours
Specs: Difficulty 3/9, Trail class 1-3,
Features: Grassland and pine ridges, scenic views of the Cordilleras, burial caves
Article history: Created 30-Nov-2015 by Gideon Lasco

BACKGROUND
A “mini-Mt. Ugo” which showcases the best of what the Cordilleras has to offer: Pine and grassland ridges with stunning views of the mountains, and even a glimpse of culture with villages, burial caves, and hanging bridges, the Mt. Ulap Eco-Trail in Itogon, Benguet is the perfect dayhike from Baguio City, only 40 minutes away from Burnham Park by public jeepney. Spanning around 8 kilometres through several peaks along the Ampucao-Sta. Fe Ridge (not to be confused with the Philex Ridge), it is easy enough to be completed from 4-6 hours, making it feasible as a dayhike or even a half-dayhike for hikers of all levels.

The trailhead starts along from the road to Philex in Brgy. Ampucao, but as of December 2015, hikers have to make a 10-minute detour to the barangay hall to register and secure guides (required). The trail goes up a ridgeline that is immediately surrounded by pines, and soon becomes scenic with views of Mt. Sto. Tomas and Baguio City; the perennially mist-covered Central Cordilleras from Ugo to Pulag; and to the south, even Mt. Arayat.

A number of peaks and points of attraction are traversed via this relaxing trail: from the grassland slopes of Ambunao Paoay to Gungal Rock, and then to the highest point, Mt. Ulap (officially 1846m but 1856m according to our measurements). The descent from Mt. Ulap to Pong-ol Burial Caves is akin to the descent from Mt. Ugo summit to Tinongdan, with its steep, pine-forested terrain. The Burial Caves themselves are a nice attraction, and at Sta. Fe there are hanging bridge and cemented footpath that complete the experience.

Once the province of trail runners, the opening up of Mt. Ulap as a hiking destination augurs well for opening up more mountains in the Cordilleras and hopefully people realise that there is much more to the region than Mt. Pulag. Pinoy Mountaineer recommends Mt. Ulap as a dayhike from Baguio and as a sidetrip or warm-up hike to bigger hikes in the region. The only caveat is that because of its popularity it’s becoming inconvenient to hike on weekends – so we are recommending it as a weekday hike – unless you don’t mind enduring the crowds and lengthy queues at Gungol Rock.

Sunrise Challenge in Mt Pigingan in Itogon, Benguet, Philippines (My first Cordillera climb!)

The 10-km hike to the summit of Mt Pigingan was my first in the Cordillera Mountain Range in Northern Philippines. The trail was moderately challenging as it snaked through the mountainside, but the smell of pine trees and the cool breeze took away much of the strain.

We started from the trailhead at roughly 4:30am and got to the peak in about 4 hours. Wonderfully, there were no mosquitoes at that time but we walked past some cattle grazing on the mountain.

If you are visiting Baguio and can squeeze in an extra day, this would be a good experience to try. Do bring the proper gear.

About this weeks episode:
9 MUST VISIT TOURIST SPOTS IN SAGADA - Popular as a destination of foreign adventurers, Sagada features caves that can be explored (even by non-experts) with the aid of local guides, an interesting hike along an underground river, a waterfall and pool to cool off in after a day of exploring, and a quiet serenity only found off the beaten path. The forebears of the current residents practiced an unusual burial practice by hanging and stacking coffins, hewed from tree trunks, in the limestone karst cliffs and caves near town.

Gabriela's note: This list is what I brought in my recent first camping experience. Some of those are optional since it depends on your camping schedule if you are day tour or overnight, which in our case we have overnight. Preferably, I advise that you bring those essentials and will not overload your hiking bag (lol based on my experience even those that I listed that are essentials are heavy to carry). Maybe because it was my first time hiking so I came prepared hehe.
