We've spent a few weeks over a couple of trips to Ischia, read all the blogs, bought some guide books, (DEFINITELY buying the guidebook with the bus route map in it when you arrive), and learned a lot from trial and error and talking to locals. That's how we came up with the best things to do on the island of Ischia.
We've gone during the off-season and at the end of high season. This video is from the beginning of September. I would even suggest going in mid-September when everything seems to still be open, weather is great, and you'll have a bit fewer tourists. August is a tough month because, in Italy, it's when shops shut-down for the Italians to take a vacation. I'd avoid Italy in August as a general rule.

Ischia Italy is a volcanic island in the Gulf of Napoli (Naples) in Italy. What is special about this island is the thermal water and the hot springs rich in minerals which Romans used to bathe in and are still used for health benefits. The Aragonese Castle was built on a smaller island just in the city called Ischia as well which makes it a perfect addition to the view.
Ischia is a volcanic island in the Gulf of Naples, Italy. It's known for its mineral-rich thermal waters. Hot springs bubble up at Maronti Beach, in the south. East Roman remains lie beneath the sea floor at Cartaromana Beach. The beach has views of medieval Aragonese Castle, linked to Ischia by a stone bridge. Nearby, 18th-century Palazzo dell’Orologio houses the Sea Museum, devoted to Ischia’s fishing tradition.
Most visitors head straight for the north-coast towns of Ischia Porto, Ischia Ponte, Forio and Lacco Ameno. Of these, Ischia Porto boasts the best bars, while Forio and Lacco Ameno have the prettiest spas and gardens. On the calmer south coast, the car-free perfection of Sant’Angelo offers a languid blend of a cozy harbor and lazy beaches. In between the coasts lies a less-trodden landscape of chestnut forests, vineyards and volcanic rock, loomed over by Monte Epomeo, Ischia’s highest peak.

Italy offers so much to see and do that it would take a lifetime to explore.
A Perfect Week on the Island of Ischia ????????✨????
Ischia, in the Bay of Naples, has managed to lay low as a bit of a hidden gem in Italy’s South as far as European Travel, but you may know it now as the setting of parts of Jude Law’s The Talented Mr Ripley and Elena Ferrante’s My Brilliant Friend. We came to the island for a week of really slowing down and blending in with the locals, though my northern Italy Italian needed some interesting translation here in the south. You can get around the island by car or by boat or, as we did, by barbie car (i.e Mini-Moke).
Our Airbnb was a perfectly self contained little house in the small local town of Forio and our hosts were unbelievably generous - we were definitely semi-adopted by the host mama!
We can’t recommend Ischia enough if you’re looking for some real local southern Italian island time and if you have any questions… ask away below! The only thing we didn’t get to was the Thermal Springs that the island is famous for (it was just too hot) but they come highly recommended.

Ischia is a volcanic island in the Gulf of Naples, Italy. It's known for its mineral-rich thermal waters. Hot springs bubble up at Maronti Beach, in the south. East, Roman remains lie beneath the sea floor at Cartaromana Beach. The beach has views of medieval Aragonese Castle, linked to Ischia by a stone bridge. Nearby, 18th-century Palazzo dell’Orologio houses the Sea Museum, devoted to Ischia’s fishing tradition.
Ischia is the largest island in the bay of Naples and is considered by many to be the most beautiful, (though Capri is considerably more famous). The island is 10 km from east to west and 7 km north to south. It has a coastline of 34 km and covers an area of 46.3 sq km. It has a permanent population of approximately 58,000. Up to 6 million tourists (principally from the Italian mainland and Germany) flock to the island for its volcanic thermal spas and as well for its beaches and food.
Several towns are located along the island's coast. The largest city in Ischia is actually (and often confusingly, for tourists) called Ischia. The town of Ischia, however, has two different centers: Ischia Porto and Ischia Ponte. Ischia Porto is the commercial center of the island and is named after the main port. Ischia Ponte (ponte meaning bridge in Italian) is named for the area surrounding and including the footbridge that was constructed to connect the Castello Aragonese with the island. Beside the town of Ischia, some of the other centres are Lacco Ameno, Casamicciola, Forio, Barano, Sant'Angelo, and the jointed town of Serrara-Fontana.

Ischia — historically called Pitecusae — has been colonized in turn by the Greeks, Syrausansa, Romans, Saracens, Turks, and Aragonese; all of whom were interested in its excellent strategic position as well as its therapeutic hot-spring waters and of course its attractive landscape. The result of all this varied history can be seen in the ruins of various outposts, towers, and tufa rock shelters hidden all over the island. More recently Ischia has become a frequent backdrop for Italian and American movies such as “Vacanze ad Ischia”, “Appuntamento ad Ischia”, and The Talented Mr.Ripley. The island has also been used as a cinematic stand-in for the Island of Capri.
