TOP 10... FANTASTIC PLACES IN VALLETTA, MALTA

My top 10 choice of the fantastic Valletta its Malta's Awesome capital, built by the Knights of St John on a peninsula that's only 1km by 600m. Its founder decreed that it should be 'a city built by gentlemen for gentlemen', and it retains its 16th-century elegance.

A visit to Mosta Mdina & Rabat, Malta with primeguides.net

A tour of the towns of Mosta, Mdina & Rabat in Malta with Belleair Holidays. Steeped in history, the video covers the walking tour of Mostar and Mdina and finishes with the Festival of St Paul in Mdina.

Perched on a plateau, Mdina retains a medieval atmosphere, which is reflected in its ancient winding streets and stunning architecture. Enjoy the Mdina Experience, visit the nearby Catacombs (Rabat) with a short drive to the glassworks, Ta Qali crafts centre and Dingli Cliffs.

Like nearby Mdina, Rabat played a major role in Malta's past and is a prime source of its cultural heritage. The town is a commercial centre and acts as a market to its large agricultural hinterland. It is also well established on the tourist map due to its archaeological and historical sites: The Roman Villa (Domus Romana), catacombs, St. Paul's Grotto and the fine churches and monasteries.

RABAT | St. Paul's Catacombs | Malta | Tour April 2023

Rabat (Maltese: Ir-Rabat, [ɪrˈrɐbɐt]) is a town in the Northern Region of Malta, with a population of 11,497 as of March 2014. It adjoins the ancient capital city of Mdina, and a north-western area formed part of the Roman city of Melite until its medieval retrenchment. The Apostolic Nunciature of the Holy See to the Republic of Malta is seated in this village. The Local Council of Rabat is also the administrator of Baħrija. Parts of the films Munich and Black Eagle were shot in Rabat. In December 1999, Mtarfa was split from Rabat to form a separate Local Council by Act XXI, an amendment to the Local Council Act of 1993 (Act XV).

Rabat is home to the famous Catacombs of St. Paul and of St. Agatha. These catacombs were used in Roman times to bury the dead as, according to Roman culture, it was unhygienic to bury the dead in the city. Mdina and parts of Rabat were built on top of the ancient Roman city of Melite. The Maltese catacombs were never meant to be hiding places during persecutions or as living quarters.

The Catacombs of St. Paul are now looked after by Heritage Malta. Part of St. Paul's Catacombs, the part accessible from the Parish tradition and as recorded in the Bible, St. Paul stayed for three months when he was shipwrecked on the island in AD 60.[clarification needed]

In the Catacombs of St Agatha's, there are over 500 graves of several types, the majority being for children. There are sections for pagans and Jews, as well as for Christians. There are also unique frescoes.

Another interesting feature in the Maltese catacombs is the agape table, two of which, carved out of bedrock, were found in the Catacombs of St. Paul.

MALTA | Tour of Rabat Malta, home of Roman Catacombs [Filmed in HDR]

RABAT MALTA - Tour of this Malta town near Mdina, homel of Roman Catacombs - filmed in HDR
Rabat is a town in the Northern Region of Malta. It adjoins the ancient capital city of Mdina, and a north-western area formed part of the Roman city of Melite until its medieval retrenchment.

While the main attraction in this area of Malta is medieval Mdina, the larger town of Rabat is also quite worth exploring in its own right. With a number of interesting attractions, lovely architecture, and a wonderful cafe culture, one can easily spend a leisurely day exploring this wonderful place

Rabat is home to the famous Catacombs of St. Paul and of St. Agatha. These catacombs were used in Roman times to bury the dead as, according to Roman culture, it was unhygienic to bury the dead in the city.

Mdina and parts of Rabat were built on top of an ancient Roman city.

Paul stayed for three months when he was shipwrecked on the island in 60 A.D.

Mdina is a popular day-trip destination, and it isn’t difficult to see why. With a fascinating history as the original capital of Malta and its beautiful walled setting, there are some great things to do in Mdina.

Mdina also has a claim to fame as being the filming location for King’s Landing in the first season of HBO’s Game of Thrones. Luckily, however, it hasn’t seemed to have attracted near the number of tourists that Dubrovnik has but it can make you long for the days when Jaime Lannister still had two hands and Ned Stark still had his head.

The adjacent town of Rabat — which quite literally translates to “suburb” — is often overlooked by tourists. However, it is also a wonderful place to visit with some intriguing points of interest. Both towns can also offer a calming refuge from the busyness of Sliema and the touristy streets of Valletta.

1 DAY in MDINA and RABAT | Malta | Tour April 2023

Mdina, also known by its Italian-language titles Città Vecchia (Old City) and Città Notabile (Notable City), is a fortified city in the Northern Region of Malta which served as the island's capital from antiquity to the medieval period. The city is still confined within its walls and has a population of just under 300, but it is contiguous with the town of Rabat, which takes its name from the Arabic word for suburb, and has a population of over 11,000.

The city was founded as Maleth in around the 8th century BC by Phoenician settlers and was later renamed Melite by the Romans. Ancient Melite was larger than present-day Mdina and was reduced to its current size during the Byzantine or Arab occupation of Malta. During the latter period, the city adopted its present name, which derives from the Arabic word medina. The city remained the capital of Malta throughout the Middle Ages, until the arrival of the Order of St. John in 1530, when Birgu became the administrative centre of the island. Mdina experienced a period of decline over the following centuries, although it saw a revival in the early 18th century. At this point, it acquired several Baroque features, although it did not lose its medieval character.

Mdina remained the center of the Maltese nobility and religious authorities (and property continues to largely be passed down from families and from generation to generation). Still, it never regained its pre-1530 importance, giving rise to the popular nickname the Silent City by both locals and visitors. Mdina is on the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and it is now one of the main tourist attractions in Malta.

Rabat (Maltese: Ir-Rabat), is a town in the Northern Region of Malta, with a population of 11,497 as of March 2014. It adjoins the ancient capital city of Mdina, and a north-western area formed part of the Roman city of Melite until its medieval retrenchment. Amazing Malta-Rabat

Rabat is a town in the Northern Region of Malta, with a population of 11,497 as of March 2014. The name of the town is derived from the Arabic word for 'suburb': الرباط, as it was the suburb of the old capital Mdina. Half of the present-day village core also formed part of the Roman city of Melite, before the latter was resized during the Fatimid occupation. The Apostolic Nunciature of the Holy See to the Republic of Malta is seated in this village. The Local Council of Rabat is also the administrator of Baħrija. Parts of the films Munich and Black Eagle were shot in Rabat. In December 1999, Mtarfa seceded from Rabat to form a separate Local Council by Act XXI, an amendment to the Local Council Act of 1993 (Act XV). Wekipedia

Valletta (or Il-Belt) is the tiny capital of the Mediterranean island nation of Malta. The walled city was established in the 1500s on a peninsula by the Knights of St. John, a Roman Catholic order. It’s known for museums, palaces and grand churches. Baroque landmarks include St. John’s Co-Cathedral, whose opulent interior is home to the Caravaggio masterpiece The Beheading of Saint John.

Whether you’re wanting a city break alone, with friends or a romantic trip with your partner, Valletta – the capital of Malta – has something to offer. Due to its Mediterranean location, whatever time of the year you visit, the sun is likely to be beating down on you as you sightsee; Valletta was recently revealed to be the sunniest city in Europe.

Valletta Malta 2020 is a city that everyone should visit for many reasons whether that be history, or just great food and drink in Malta

Valletta is inextricably linked to the history of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem. The magnificent fortress city grew on the arid rock of Mount Sciberras peninsula, which rises steeply from two deep harbours – Marsamxett and Grand Harbour – was commissioned by Grand Master Jean de La Valette in 1566 and completed in just 15 years. Known as the “city built by gentlemen for gentlemen”, Valletta is the administrative and commercial centre of the island.

With its 320 monuments in just 55 hectares, Valletta Malta is the most concentrated historic area in the world. Described as an open air museum, intriguing historical buildings are on every corner of Valletta, with votive statues, niches, fountains and coats of arms high up on parapets. The magnificent fortress city grew on the arid rock of Mount Sciberras peninsula, which rises steeply from two deep harbours, Marsamxett and Grand Harbour. Not surprisingly, Valletta is one of Malta’s three UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Valletta Malta was selected by the European Commission as the 2018 European Capital of Culture.

Hello everyone :)

In this episode we explore the western part of the main island of Malta, more specifically, the Mellieha region.

We caught a bus from the center of Birkirkara to Ghadira Bay. From there we made a quick visit to Popeye Village, one of the most touristic (and beautiful) places of Malta.

Then, we returned to Ghadira Bay and started walking towards the Chapel of Immaculate Conception following the main asphalt road along the shoreline.

From the Chapel we followed the shoreline to get to the Coral Lagoon and Beach and after we continued following the sea passing through the areas of L'Armier till Marfa and finally caught the bus back home.

It was one of my favourite hikes and Mellieha still remains one of my favourite regions around Malta. It is really worth visiting and I highly recommend doing it on foot.

Thank you so much for watching!

Love you,
Sofia

Malta Tourist Sightseeing Round Trip 2019 Part 4/5

As a Malta tourist I recommend to take a Malta sightseeing bus for Malta sightseeing. Three Malta sightseeing bus routes are mostly available for a Malta tourist. Two routes for the island of Malta and one route for the island of Gozo.

Malta tourism is mainly taking place in summer time, however, Malta is worth a visit during Christmas time as well. Christmas decoration and lights are anywhere.

No matter if you are a Malta tourist or an expatriate living on the beautiful island of Malta you should take a Malta sightseeing bus tour in order to explore the whole island and get around to spots worth watching.

The bus tour is divided into 5 videos. Enjoy!

Ta' Qali to Mtarfa on Armistice Day

Hiking from Ta' Qali to Mtarfa to attend the Military Mtarfa Exhibition that was held on the grounds of the former Royal Navy Hospital on 11th November, 2018. On the way we visit the Military Cemetery at Mtarfa and pass beneath Mdina's impressive ramparts. At Mtarfa we descend to the large wartime shelter beneath the hospital.

Trekking The Victoria lines Malta

#Malta #history #war @ZOLEOLife
Today I will cover the Victoria Lines, which are a continuous infantry wall which connects together three forts (at Bingemma, Mosta and Madliena), an entrenchment at Dwejra and a number of other gun batteries and ancillary military facilities to form a single line of defence. This is some twelve kilometers long and it follows the contour of the Great Fault, a geological feature which cuts across Malta from coast to coast; specifically from Fomm ir-Rih in the west to Madliena in the east. Forming part of the same defensive system are also an additional fort (at Pembroke) and extensive military barracks (at Mtarfa and Pembroke).
To make this video I had to cover around 21km of trekking.
