Passau, Germany: Things To Do In The City Of Three Rivers [Travel Guide]
This time, we stopped in the small city, colourful city of Passau, Germany. The city lies very close to the Austrian border and is also the point where THREE major rivers - the Ilz, Danube, and Inn - meet!
From a stunning cathedral to the charming old town, we had a really relaxing time exploring the city when we visited at the start of September! We even got the chance to hike up to the Veste Oberhaus - a fortress that is over 800 years old - and enjoyed a drink with amazing views! Passau is also a popular stop for Danube river cruises so if you're visiting Passau (for whatever reason), this video should give you a snapshot of what to expect!

My first stop in Europe well on an assignment for Viking River Cruises was the town of Passau, Germany which is in the heart of Bavaria. The town is a travel photographer's dream. It is just a fantastic place to shoot images. Passau has plenty of fantastic views to keep you occupied. It also has beautiful architecture, interesting streets, good food, and markets. Of course, it's also Christmas season in Europe, so I had the chance to visit the Bavarian Christmas market, and sample some of the local grub. All in all, Passau, Germany was absolutely brilliant. It's one of those places that just defines this part of Europe. In many ways, it's the typical Bavarian town, and in other ways it's just so unique. It's one of those European towns that I'd love to spend a week or two just exploring the streets and creating images. But, alas, my time in Passau had to be fairly short as I only had a day and a half before my ship set sail for my next destination.

One of the MOST PICTURESQUE Cities along the Danube River | PASSAU, GERMANY
Passau is a picturesque city located in the South Eastern part of Germany in the state of Bavaria. The city borders Austria and the state capitol Munich is about a 2 hour drive away.
We’ll start the city tour at the Veste Oberhaus, a 13th century fortress located atop a hill just north of the Danube river.
We’ll continue to the Pilgrimage church of Mariahilf located in the Innstadt, just south of the river Inn. Afterwards, I’ll take you on a walking tour loop through the Innstadt and crossing over a bridge above the Inn river.
Next we’ll explore the city center which comprises the Neumarkt and Altstadt, which is the old town known for its baroque architecture, including St. Stephen’s Cathedral featuring one of the biggest organs in the world.
At the eastern tip of Old town is where the river Danube is joined by the Inn from the south and Ilz from the north giving Passau its Nickname Drei-Fluesse-Stadt which means “City of Three Rivers”.
At the end of the tour we’ll return to Veste Oberhaus for spectacular nighttime views of the city.

A day trip to Passau, Germany, seeing the Stadtpfarrkirche St. Paul, Dom St. Stephan, Veste Oberhaus (€4 for students or €5 for adults to visit both museum and observation tower), Dreiflüsseeck (Three River Conjunction) and Schaiblingsturm.

Walking in PASSAU / Germany ????????- 4K 60fps (UHD)
Passau / Germany is a Bavarian city at the Austrian border. Passau is called the City of Three Rivers as it lies at the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers.
On our tour we start at the St. Stephen's Cathedral, featuring distinctive onion-domed towers and an organ with 17,974 pipes. We walk down to the banks of the Inn river and check out the the old town which is known for its baroque architecture.
Soon we are at the Three River Conjunction (Dreiflüsseeck) from where we walk back along the Danube (Donau) river on the Donaukai. This leads us back to the central city where we get to the train station and end our Passau tour.

Our walking tour included Christmas markets near St. Stephen’s Cathedral and a traditional gingerbread tasting and demonstration at Cafe Simon. I loved the chef’s energy, explanations and learning about the different types of gingerbread made with honey and molasses.

Passau was founded by the Celts more than 2,000 years ago and is one of Bavaria's oldest cities. It rests at the confluence of the Inn (think Innsbruck), Ilz and Danube Rivers.
A good walking tour on a raw day through little lanes, oohing and aahing over old buildings on the last river cruise day.

Touring Passau, the City on Three Rivers
tour buses parked by the Danube in Old Town Passau, Germany
This shows a number of tour buses parked along the Danube in Old Town Passau, Germany on July 6, 2017. Supposedly there are 300,000 cruise ship passengers per year here in Passau in a town of only 50,000. Amazing. So, to see this many tour buses parked by the cruise ship dock is perfectly consistent with that.

The reservoir by the Oberilzmühle (also known as Haslach-Speicher) is just by the river Ilz, located north of Passau and is part of the community of Salzweg.
