Oaxaca is a state of Mexico. Oaxaca is located in Southwestern Mexico. It is bordered by the states of Guerrero to the west, Puebla to the northwest, Veracruz to the north, and Chiapas to the east. To the south, Oaxaca has a significant coastline on the Pacific Ocean.
The state is best known for its indigenous peoples and cultures. The most numerous and best known are the Zapotecs and the Mixtecs, but there are sixteen that are officially recognized. These cultures have survived better than most others in Mexico due to the state's rugged and isolating terrain. Most live in the Central Valleys region, which is also an economically important area for tourism, with people attracted for its archeological sites such as Monte Albán, and Mitla, and its various native cultures and crafts. Another important tourist area is the coast, which has the major resort of Huatulco and sandy beaches of Puerto Escondido, Puerto Ángel, Zipolite, Bahia de Tembo, and Mazunte. Oaxaca is also one of the most biologically diverse states in Mexico, ranking in the top three, along with Chiapas and Veracruz, for numbers of reptiles, amphibians, mammals and plants.
The state of Oaxaca (wah-hah-kah) has a special magic felt by Mexicans and foreigners alike. A bastion of indigenous culture, it’s home to the country’s most vibrant crafts and art scene, some outstandingly colorful and extroverted festivities, a uniquely savory cuisine and diverse natural riches. At the center of the state in every way stands beautiful, colonial Oaxaca city, an elegant and fascinating cultural hub. Nearby, the forested Sierra Norte is home to successful community-tourism ventures enabling visitors to hike, bike and ride horses amid delicious green mountainscapes. To the south, across rugged, remote ranges, is Oaxaca’s fabulous tropical coast, with its wide sandy beaches, pumping Pacific surf, seas full of dolphins and turtles, and a string of beach towns and villages that will placate even the most anxious of travelers: surfer-heaven Puerto Escondido; planned but relaxed Bahías de Huatulco; and the mellow delights of Mazunte, Zipolite and San Agustinillo.
Oaxaca is one of the poorest states in Mexico. Therefore, there's a great lack of public services in the whole state. While visiting Oaxaca, you will find a lot of roads and places in poor conditions, but people tend to be friendly if you give them nice comments about their place of origin. Regardless of the lack of services, Oaxaca has much to be proud of. Its great biodiversity and cultural heritage is reflected in having almost every type of ecosystem and many monuments from different epochs, including pyramids, churches and some new buildings in the capital city. So for an open-minded visitor, there is much to learn and enjoy in Oaxaca.

Oaxaca has a very rich gastronomy that offers a wide range of dishes. Most commonly in Oaxaca de Juárez you will have the chance to eat the famous Tlayudas, a giant tortilla filled with beans and the oaxacan quesillo (wrapped cheese) and accompanied by tasajo (beef). Dauntless travelers should also try Chapulines (Grasshoppers), which are another popular dish that real tourists should not miss.

Que hacer en Huautla
¿Has escuchado hablar acerca del pueblo mágico de Huautla? Es un lugar místico en la Sierra de Oaxaca, es la tierra de María Sabina y hogar de los hongos alúcinógenos conocidos como Teonanácatl. En este video te decimos que hacer en Huautla.
En este episodio, fuimos de visita a Huautla de Jimenez a descubrir los secretos de la sierra, nuestra aventura comenzó en Tehuacán Puebla, por que es el lugar más cercano a Huautla, y de ahí seguimos adelante hasta adentrarnos al pueblo más mágico de Oaxaca. En nuestro recorrido, visitamos el pueblo de Usila y también subimos al cerro de la adoración para pedir por nuestra salud y protección, un ritual antiquísimo de la gente mazateca.
No se puede dejar pasar por alto que en Huautla se puede consumir el Teonanácatl, el hongo alucinógeno sagrado, dentro de ceremonias conocidas como vigilias en donde los niños santos pueden sanar heridas espirituales o ayudarte a re-conectarte contigo mismo y la naturaleza.

We booked this tour through AirBnb after seeing it on Tangerine Travels. This is a great tour if you want to learn about the artisan culture in Oaxaca. Pack snacks as this tour runs straight through without stopping for lunch. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing behind the scenes and learning the ancient methods used at each stop. Highly recommend!

We added this event last minute and bought tickets through Whatsapp. We decided to purchase front row which was a wise choice! The crowd & atmosphere was incredible! The fighters really embraced their roles which made the experience a fun one! This is an outdoor arena but situated under a large tent. Bring extra pesos for snacks, drinks, and merchandise. Street parking is available.
Hierve El Agua

We were so excited to hear that Hierve El Agua opened a couple weeks prior to our arrival into Oaxaca. This was our number one thing to do, and it did not disappoint! We recommend going as soon as they open. It’s about an hour and half from Oaxaca so leave as early as possible to arrive as they open. You’ll want to be sure to visit on a clear day as the road there turns into a very windy dirt road up the mountain with some very steep parts. If it rains, the road will become dangerous and there’s a couple bridges you must cross on the way that are prone to flooding. Tour buses are available for transport at the bottom of the mountain in the village below. There are 3 large pools to swim in and a short hike. You can bring a picnic and snacks, or they have vendors with everything you need there. It’s an absolutely stunning experience, we could have spent all day there!

Due to COVID, I don’t believe there was as much going on in El Centro as in the past years, but it was still a great experience to be a part of. There were a few main streets where most of the people gathered a few bands playing a few short parades. With the city décor, muchas ofrendas, face-painting, food & more it makes for a unique experience!

This traditional sweat lodge is tucked away in a village 15 minutes from the center of Oaxaca. This experience comes with 30-50 minutes in the sauna and an hour-long full body massage. This was such a special tradition to experience and a fantastic way to end our trip. Highly recommend!
Wilson’s Tips for Oaxaca:
Hire a driver: our car rental plans fell through and we ended up connecting with a local through our Airbnb house manager. Not only was his pricing reasonable, but this also made our week effort free as we no longer had to worry about driving, parking or paying for gas. Sometimes hiring a local driver may be a cheaper option than renting.
Tacos Al Pastor: We highly recommend you search for local taco vendors that sell tacos al pastor! We tried as many places as possible and most were delicious and such a great price!
Picking an alebrije: Prior to choosing an alebrije tour, we recommend you ask if they offer an opportunity to discover what your own alebrije is. We toured the Jacob & Maria Angeles workshop and were pleased to discover what our alebrijes were and were able to take home our very own pieces.

HUAUTLA DE JIMÉNEZ un lugar lleno de misticismo donde el atractivo principal son:
LOS HONGOS ALUCINOGENEOS pertenece a la zona Mazateca de la región Cañada, en el estado de Oaxaca, y está situado a 6 horas aproximadamente de Oaxaca capital.
Ritos y significados milenarios detrás de las sustancias psicoativas, en particular de los hongos alucinógenos: el de la oaxaqueña María Sabina y sus “niños santos” como ella llamaba a estos últimos.
La primera vez que un extranjero visitó a María Sabina en Huautla de Jiménez, Oaxaca fue en 1955, cuando Robert Gordon Wasson, estudioso de los hongos (paradójicamente también vicepresidente de J.P Morgan) y su esposa Valentina Pavlovna, viajaron a México luego de que el primero leyera un artículo de Robert Graves en el periódico Ciba en Nueva York sobre el uso de unos hongos en México.
La pareja experimentó un ritual con María Sabina En las sierras de México, un banquero neoyorquino participa en antiguos ritos practicados por indios que acostumbran a masticar raros hongos alucinantes.
Los ojos del mundo voltearon a los hongos enteógenos de la Sierra Mazateca a principios de la década de los 60, luego de que Robert Gordon Wasson —banquero frustrado y etnomicólogo— conoció a María Sabina durante un viaje a Huautla de Jiménez, Oaxaca. Wasson investigaba el uso religioso de los hongos, y un buen día fue llevado con esta Chjota Chjine (gente de conocimiento). Robert comió “hongos divinos” con su equipo. Alucinó, convivió con el entorno, volvió a comer y posteriormente escribió un reportaje para la revista Life en el que narraba como la noche del 29 de junio de 1955, «en una aldea mexicana tan lejana que la mayoría de habitantes no hablan español, mi amigo Allan Richardson [fotógrafo] y yo compartimos con una hospitalaria familia india una “comunión sagrada” en la cual se adoraron primero y se consumieron luego, ciertos hongos “divinos”. En la ceremonia religiosa los indios mezclaron ritos cristianos y paganos en forma desconcertante para el cristiano, pero natural para los indígenas. Dirigieron el ritual dos mujeres, madre e hija, ambas curanderas; y el oficio se celebró en lengua mixteca».
Además... Cuenta con paisajes que hacen destellar los ojos y sentír la tranquilidad del alma donde un claro ejemplo es la cascada velo de novia, las grutas de San Agustin y el cerro de la adoración (Nindo Tokoxo).

Caminando son 2 horas aproximadamente desde la entrada de Huautla hasta la casa Museo.
Taxi $10 pesos del sitio María Sabina, ¡OJO! (son los que no tienen rotulado los honguitos) y te dejan en el hospital del imss, como a 100 metros de la casa museo.
•Visita la cascada velo de novia, las grutas y el cerro de la adoración (Nindo Tokoxo) NO TIENE COSTO pero..... Tampoco hay algún guía y esto dificulta un poco el acceso.
Ingesta de HONGOS,
•Para tener una COMUNION SAGRADA existen muchas curanderas,
como la sra. Julieta que te cobra $1,200 pesos.
Y los que CERTIFICA el municipio que para mí gusto son más económicos y brindan mayor seguridad al que desea tener esta conexión mística.
La temporada al igual que en San José del Pacífico comienza a mediados de junio, julio y agosto,es lo más recomendable)
PDT: el municipio está trabajando arduamente para poder brindar un mejor servicio y que la estancia sea mejor y más confortable.
