MERIDA, MEXICO | 8 Incredible Things To Do In & Around Mérida
Mérida, Mexico is located in the northwest of the beautiful Yucatan State. It’s the state capital and widely known as the safest city in Mexico. But what attracts most visitors is its thriving food and cultural scene. With an interesting mix of Mayan and colonial culture, Mérida is encircled by ancient temples, sacred cenotes, and colorful streets with colonial mansions.
Here are our top 8 things you SHOULD do in Mérida, Mexico.
8. Walk the Paseo de Montejo
Home to some of the most beautiful and iconic buildings of the city, the Paseo de Montejo is a great place for an afternoon stroll.
7. Try the local Yucatecan cuisine
Trying the local Yucatecan cuisine is an absolute must when in Mérida! Food is a big part of the city’s culture, bringing together Mayan, Spanish, and Lebanese influences. In the center, you can find many great restaurants that serve traditional dishes.
6. Explore nearby Izamal
The small town of Izamal is about 70km or 43 miles away from Mérida, making for a great day trip. There’s a collectivo on the corner of Calle 50 and 63 which takes you from the center of Merida to the heart of Izamal in less than 1 and a half hours. Most of the buildings in the downtown area are painted yellow, giving the city a distinct bright feeling.
5. Swim in the nearby cenotes
Mérida can get very hot during the day. So one great way to cool off is to visit a nearby cenote! There are tons of beautiful cenotes around the city. Some are easily reachable by bus and others are more hidden, requiring a rental car to get there. Do your research before you visit as some can get very crowded.
4. Mérida's Historic Center (Free walking tour)
The 4th best thing to do in Mérida is to explore the Historic Center. With many colorful homes, beautiful colonial architecture, churches, and cute parks, this part of the city never bores. The streets are clean, well-maintained, and filled with restaurants, shops, and entertainment. The best way to learn about the city is to go on a free walking tour.

3. Day trip to Celestún
Located along the coast, Celestún is another great day trip destination. It’s about 100 km or 62 miles from Mérida and it takes around 2 hours to get there by bus. Here, you’ll find the Ria Celestun Biosphere Reserve, which is home to flamingos, crocodiles, and many other birds. As many as 35,000 flamingos live here from November to February. But besides the flamingos, Celestun also has a gorgeous beach for relaxing and swimming.

The thing we loved the most about the city of Mérida was its evening entertainment. There’s always something going on every night of the week. The city’s streets and plazas come to life with cultural performances, concerts, and dances that are free and open to the public.

At number one, we have one of the best archeological sites in Mexico: the Uxmal Ruins. Located 85 km or 53 miles to the south of Mérida, Uxmal is an important Mayan City and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Discover 6 incredible cenotes in the Yucatan Peninsula (near Merida). We share all the names so you can visit them too!
The town of Homun is known as 'The Ring of Cenotes'. We honestly had no idea this place existed until we heard of it from our walking tour guide in Merida, and when he described it, we knew we had to visit! I mean, there are over 300 cenotes in Homun. That's crazy!
We didn't experience any crowds at any of these cenotes and ended up having the best day ever, thanks to our local guide Carlos, who is from Homun and very proud of his Mayan heritage. He shared a lot of interesting information with us and we learned so much from him that day. We would do it ALL OVER AGAIN!

Best Cenotes of Yucatan! Tour De Cenotes Homun
We took a trip to Merida Yucatan, and while we were there we had to visit cenotes! We found that some of the Best Cenotes of Yucatan were in the town of Homun. The area is also known as The Ring of Cenotes for the large of cenotes that exist.
Homun is an extremely hospitable town, and we were extremely lucky to find the best Cenotes Tour Guide! We chose to roll with Jesus Dzul Chale, he also goes by El Búho, which means owl. You can contact Jesus at his page
You will not regret it. He is so kind, and knowledgable, you will enjoy your time.
The Tour Cenotes Homun Yucatan we went on included 4 cenotes. If you want to extend the tour Jesus is more than happy to take you on an extended tour.

Spent the day with friends in a little city right outside of Merida called Homun. If you are visiting Merida its an easy day trip. About an hour South east from the city.
Amazing Merida Day Trip to Cenote Santa Barbara in Homun!
This was an amazing day trip only an hour away from Merida! Cenote Santa Barbara is in the town of Homun, which is a town worth visiting over and over again because there are dozens of cenotes there to explore!
This one was perhaps the most developed of them all with great facilities so perfect for a large group. I paid $700 pesos for the bus ride and access to the facilities, which included lunch. Thanks to the Black Merida Facebook Group for always curating these awesome events.

Último video de mi aventura por Yucatán, y en esta ocasión visito uno de los pueblos más recomendados por los locales durante mi visita. El humilde Homún. Un pueblo que se encuentra rodeado de cenotes, muy bien conservados y protegidos por la comunidad local. Muy recomendable en su visita a Mérida.

En este video visito varios cenotes increíbles como lo son: Cenote Canunchen, Cenote Balmil, Cenote los tres oches, Cenotes Santa Barbara, Grutas como la gruta Santa Maria, todos en el poblado de Homún en el estado de Yucatán.

BEST Cenotes for Jumping in Homun | Expat Family Life in Mérida, Mexico
About a 45-60 min drive outside of Mérida is Homun, the city of cenotes. This small town has over 20 cenotes! We asked the tour guides there which cenotes are best for jumping into the water...and he did not disappoint.
We visited 2 cenotes with platforms or rocks to jump from and rope swings to launch into the water with. Unfortunately, we had to cut our visit at the 2nd cenote a little early at the 2nd due to the rain, but luckily we had enough time to discover its surprising perk. Watch above to find out what it was!

Join me as I explore some of the most beautiful cenotes in Homun, Mexico! I recently visited Merida, Mexico and took a road trip to nearby Homun to check out these amazing cenotes! The Yucatan Peninsula is where the majority of cenotes in Mexico are located. FYI: It is believed that the massive meteorite that killed the dinosaurs landed here, creating all of these magnificent cenotes which are scattered across the Yucatan. This area is also known as the cenote zone.
