A Drive through Inner Mongolia
Every step from the vast grasslands to the deserts was a new discovery. The locals were friendly and welcoming, eager to share their culture and traditions. The food was delicious, with flavours and spices that were new to me. Riding on horseback through the grasslands was a highlight, as was watching the sunset over the sand dunes. Overall, Inner Mongolia was an unforgettable experience I would highly recommend it to anyone seeking adventure and a taste of a different way of life.

Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, China
Hohhot, commonly known as Hoh, formerly known as Guisui, is a prefecture-level city and the capital of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, which is the political, economic and cultural center of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region as approved by the State Council and an important central city in the northern border area of China. The city has four municipal districts, four counties and one flag, with a total area of 17,200 square kilometers, of which 260 square kilometers are built-up areas. According to the data of the 7th census, the resident population of Hohhot was 3,446,100 as of November 1, 2020. 2021, the city's regional GDP was RMB 312.14 billion, up 6.5% year-on-year.
Hohhot is located in North China, the northern border, and inside the Eurasian continent, and is the core city of the Hohbaoyin City Cluster and the center city of the Hohbaoyin City Cluster, an important bridge linking the Yellow River Economic Belt, the Asia-Europe Continental Bridge, and the Bohai Rim Economic Region, as well as an important border-opening center city of China opening to Mongolia and Russia.
Hohhot is a famous national historical and cultural city, one of the birthplaces of Chinese civilization, with a long history and glorious culture. During the pre-Qin period, King Wu Ling of Zhao set up Yunzhong County here, the former site of which is in the territory of Toketo County, southwest of present-day Hohhot. During the Republican period, it was the capital of Suiyuan Province, and after the merger of Mongolia and Sui, Hohhot became the capital of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. In 1954, the city was renamed Hohhot, which means green city in Mongolian.
Hohhot is also a national historical and cultural city, a national forest city, a national innovative pilot city, a national model city for national unity and progress, a national model city for double support, an excellent tourist city in China, and one of the top 100 cities in China in terms of economic strength, and is known as the Dairy Capital of China. In December 2018, it was named one of the top 100 best business cities in mainland China in 2018. On October 23, 2019, it was identified as the third batch of urban black smelly water treatment demonstration cities, and in October 2020, it was named as the national model city (county) of double support.

Part Mongolian, part Chinese, Inner Mongolia, or 内蒙古, is a perfect travel destination for anyone fed up with the grind of the big city life in Beijing or Shanghai. Featuring plenty of incredible Buddhist temples, a mosque, hiking opportunities, and interesting markets in the city, Hohhot is also great for its proximity to the desert and the grasslands.
