Harz National Park is a nature reserve in the German federal states of Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt.
It comprises large portions of the western Harz mountain range, extending from Herzberg and Bad Lauterberg at the southern edge to Bad Harzburg and Ilsenburg on the northern slopes.
95% of the area is covered with forests, mainly with spruce and beech woods, including several bogs, granite rocks and creeks.
There are various vegetation zones in the Harz National Park.
In the sub-alpine area above 1050 metres is the battle zone of the spruce tree.
The altimontane vegetation zone is found between 750 m above sea level (NN) and 1,050 m above NN, dominated by spruce.
Not until the montane zone between 450 m above NN and 750 m above NN and the submontane zone is the vegetation dominated by beech forests.
At heights above 700 m it is usually adjacent to spruce-beech mixed woodland.
But in the national park this area has shrunk to just a few residual stands and has been largely replaced by spruce.
In the region of Ilsenburg spruce monoculture occurs even down to 230 m above NN.
In these zones the spruce is not native and, as a result of climate change, it has suffered increasingly from bark beetle infestation.
Currently the National Park Service is having these areas reforested to encourage the original beech and maple, that used to dominate them, to resettle.
The lynx now lives wild again in the Harz, having been eradicated from the mountains since the early 19th century.
The Harz is now one of Germany's most important habitats for the wild cat.
It is classified in the Federal Republic of Germany as seriously endangered.
It is assumed that the wild cat in the Harz has a stable population.
It is widespread throughout the region, preferring those areas which are warmer, richer, more varied and better supplied with nutrients (lower lying deciduous forest with greater food availability).
In addition to lynx and wild cat, red deer and roe deer are also important species in the Harz National Park.
The most common invasive species is the raccoon, but occasionally the raccoon dog also occurs.
The mouflon, which was in the 1930s located in different districts of the Harz for hunting reasons, is also found in the park.

Die K7 führt an Elbingerode am #Harz vorbei, was dazu führen könnte, dass man dieses Idyll übersieht, wenn man hektisch auf Reisen ist.
Elbingerode wurde einst zum schönsten Dorf Niedersachsens gekürt und ist wirklich einen Besuch wert.
Ich wandere gerne über den Schlossberg von Herzberg am Harz aus in den Ort, denn auf dem Weg gibt es zum fotografieren viele schöne Motive und man kann Tiere gucken.
Ebenfalls über den Schlossberg oder über Aschenhütte lässt sich Elbingerode am Harz sehr gut mit Fahrrad erreichen.
Über Aschenhütte ist man ebenerdig unterwegs!
In Elbingerode am Harz sollte man sich die Kirche, das Denkmal davor, die über 800-jährige Dorflinde, den Findling, den Stein an dern Hauptstraße nach Herzberg - von dort kommt man vielleicht in den Ort - sowie die schöne Bebauung des Dorfes bewundern ... und natürlich Fotos machen!
Beim Findling gibt es eine WebCam auf der man sich nach einem Ausflug vielleicht wiederfinden kann - um ein weiteres Erinnerungsfoto für sich haben.
In der Umgebung kann sehr gut Nutz- und, wenn man Glück hat, Wildtiere gucken - in der Nähe des Findlings gibt es ein Nest für Störche.
Wichtig ist eigentlich für das erste nur, dass man Elbingerode nicht links liegen lässt, sondern sich daran macht den Ort zu erkunden!

Göttingen is a German town known for its university. The Old Botanical Garden has a collection of medicinal plants and an arboretum. In the town's rampart-ringed medieval center, the Altes Rathaus is a centuries-old town hall. Outside, stands the Gänseliesel, an iconic fountain topped by a statue of a little girl with a goose. Southeast, the 19th-century Bismarck Tower offers views of the town and surrounding forest.
In southern Lower Saxony, Göttingen is a university town in the Leine Valley. Life in the city almost revolves around the University of Göttingen. This institution was founded in 1734 by King George II of England and Elector of Hanover, and is the oldest university in Lower Saxony.
As one in five people in the city are students, a lot of the best things about Göttingen are related in some way to the university. Take the botanical garden that was established by the brilliant anatomist Albrecht von Haller or Emil Wiechert’s pioneering geophysics institute. There are also lots of quirkier sights like the statue that students kiss when they get their doctorates, or the little house where Otto von Bismarch lived during his time at the uni.
On Göttingen’s central marketplace in front of the old town hall is an Art Nouveau fountain and statue that has been here since 1901. The statue is pretty enough, and represents a girl carrying a pair of geese, one in a basket and another in her right hand. But what makes the Gänseliesel such a landmark is the traditional connected to it.
Göttingen’s old town hall was first raised in 1270 and spent more than 700 years as the city’s administrative centre. A three nave Gothic hall church, St. Jacobi was begin in 1361 and completed by 1433. The tower, crested by a white Baroque dome, is the tallest structure in the old town at 72 metres.
In 4.5 hectares on the northern curve of Göttingen’s former defensive wall is an astounding botanical garden founded in 1736 and maintained by the university. The art collection of the University of Göttingen dates back to the same decade that the university was founded.
Barely 10 minutes north of Göttingen cresting a hill over the village of Bovenden is a castle built in the 12th century as the seat of the Lords of Plesse. The cherished 19th-century humorist and illustrator Wilhelm Busch spent much of his youth in this historic water mill in bucolic countryside east of the city.
The military commander and chancellor of the German Empire Otto von Bismarck studied law at the University of Göttingen in 1832-1833, and was commemorated with a tower 60 years later.
Unlike many of the memorial towers to Bismarck in Germany, Bismarckturm on the 332-metre Kleperberg hill was started while he was still alive and was named after Bismarck with his permission.
On the slope of the Hainberg hill to the east of Göttingen is a geophysics institute established by Emil Wiechert for the university. A lot of Göttingen’s Medieval and Renaissance architecture either survived the Second World War intact or was quickly restored afterwards.
Behind the west wing of the university’s Aula building at Wilhelmsplatz 1 is one of the best-preserved student jails in the country. The museum for the university’s ethnology institute is out of the ordinary and is made up of some vital collections from 18th-century expeditions.
The city’s last remaining noble residence is the setting for a museum all about Göttingen. Impressive outside, but even more special inside, the 50-metre-long Paulinerkirche is a deconsecrated church that has become a library and lecture hall for the university. Otto von Bismarck stayed in a cute little house on the city’s south wall during his time as a student at the University of Göttingen. The Bismarckhäuschen is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Es ist vergrößert worden, es gibt Filme in 3D und 2D, der Eingang ist Rollstuhlfahrer gerecht und die Ausstattung ist besten Blockbustern würdig.

Natürlich gibt es Snacks, ich finde es allerdings schade, dass es kein salziges Popcorn gibt.

A Shocking Visit to Germany's Harz (dead) National Park
This is not one of our regular videos that show restored historic footage of the way the world was nearly a century ago. In stead it is a report of the shocking experience we had while visiting the Harz national park in Germany, now two weeks ago. We wish to share the devastating effects of climate change on the spruce tree forests in the Harz that we witnessed from a front row seat.
The Harz comprises a circa 4000 km2 medium height mountainous area approximately in the middle of Germany. Its highest peak is the Brocken at an altitude of 1142 meters.
Historically the Harz has been a mining area for many centuries as well as in more recent years a source of timber. Since the second World War it has been covered with woodland, comprising for about 90% of planted sproose trees.
Tourism also forms an important source of income for the residents in the Harz. Its, until recent, spectacularly beautiful scenery and beautiful towns with half-timbered houses annually attracts many German and foreign visitors.
Until the German unification in 1990, the Harz was divided between East and West Germany. Traces of these fortified borders can still be found there.
In this video you will see great footage of the beautiful cities and sceneries in and around the Harz, in particular Goslar, Wernigerode, Quedlinburg and of course the Brocken. However, what truely shocked us was the devastation of nature because of climate change and global warming. More than 90% of the millions of spruce trees in the Harz have died over approximately the last 5 years.
Apparently the spruce trees are now dying at an alarming rate because of a bark beatle, the so-called Borken Käfer, also called the Buchdrucker in German and Letterzetter kever in Dutch, i.e. a small bark beetle. The reason for these names is that these small, only about 5 mm long beatles, destroy the sap channels between the bark and the trunk of the spruce trees, causing them to die. Furthermore, because of drout, the trees don't produce enough resin that halt the beetles from eating their way into the bark.
The situation is very bad in the whole Harz, but most extreme around the Brocken mountain, North Germany´s highest mountain at 1142 meters.
Please watch these images and then ask yourself why there are still people who are questioning climate change and global warming.
One of the things that struck us was the sheer optimism with which these shocking sights are being approach. For example in the train there was an announcement which translated came down to: You obviously have noticed the many dead trees. Currently the Harz is undergoing a phase of profound change. The forest may seem dead, but in fact it is very much alive. In only a few years time the Harz will be green again.
A new, more diverse forest will emerge from the dead trees which will serve as the food source for the growth of a large variety of mainly deciduous trees.
The optimism that we heard in the train is apparently shared on many German and other websites. We found it remarkable that statements were made like that the spruce trees have never been indigenous to the Harz but were planted by man and that now all these trees have entered their final life cycle phase at the same moment. Clearly that is not the case as the trees were planted, harvested and re-planted over many decades. What to our opinion has happened is that climate change has caused an instantanious blow to nature which has exponentially peaked over a very
short period of only about 5 years.
The sentiment that Everything will be OK, as long as we let nature take its course, helped a little by man by planting a more diverse range of vegetation raises eyebrows. First of all it is doubfull whether new spruce trees won't undergo the same fate as the current destroyed forest. Spruce trees grow very fast at a rate of 25cm a year. Deciduous trees grow much slower. Even a child can understand that it will take a generation (20 to 30 years) to regrow the forest.
In the mean time the still small new vegetation will have negligable impact on the ability to store CO2, the green house gas that is at the source of global warming.
One should realize that the Harz is not the only region in Europe where massive extinction of spruce trees is occurring. It is being reported from all over Europe. About 25% of Germany alone is covered by forests, many consisting of huge numbers of spruce trees.
Some may contest the statement that The Harz is dying. However, unquestionably the Harz as we knew it is dead and will never return to how it was around the millennium. Whether it can and will be renewed and rejuvenated, only time will tell. These prospects don't look very good.
