SOOO MANY UNPAVED ROADS to BERLIN! Part 6: Bikepacking day 6 Königslutter am Elm to Helmstedt

Hello and welcome to my channel! My name is Elizabeth and in today's video I am cycling from Königslutter am Elm to Helmstedt. This route is half the route of day 6 of my solo bikepacking trip to Berlin! (In the next video I will take you on the second half of day 6.) We are getting closer and closer to Berlin! Today was a bumpy route with lots of dirt roads. Something both adventurous and a bit tiring. The sun didn't want to show herself, but that didn't get in the way of enjoying the ride.

Thanks as always for watching my videos. I really enjoy all your responses to my videos. It really inspires me to continue sharing my journey! See you in the next one! (Ohh and don't forget to like and subscribe ;)).

Photography Location #6 - A very different Street Photography, Helmstedt, Niedersachsen, Germany.

My wife and I stopped over for an hour or so, on our way back from our summer hols. We didn't plan on Helmstedt, but were amazed at the old buildings all over. Even the park house/park garage was built to reflect the style and be in keeping.

The cafe we went to was Cafe Klatch and was really nice. Coffee good, toilets and everything was super clean and the staff very friendly.

A bit off the beaten track but an extraordinary location. We sadly only had a short time and we both agreed it would have been worth while to have had longer.

Not all the pictures are good, but they give an idea of the town and the possibilities, which after all is the aim.

Transit West Berlin | Across the Iron Curtain in the 1980s

Part of my Cold War series: is a sort of Battlefield Tour.. by using present day and archival footage, also British Army Information films. In this video I'm going to reconstruct of the experience of using the Transit West Berlin Corridor across the Inner German Border and the Berlin Wall from the BDR to West Berlin during of the last years of The Cold War (1987-1989) before the Soviet union collapse of 1991.

Soviet Union and East German nostalgia for veterans, education for millenials... Europe really was like this once!!

The West Berlin Transit Corridor was the only authorised route the Soviet and East German Authorities permitted for Allied Military and vetted West German to citizens travel between West Germany and West Berlin during The Cold War and Division of Germany. It was a nerve racking experience passing through a the Communist Totalitarian state of East Germany, and for military travellers, being on your own travelling through enemy territory

The journey starts off in Helmstedt in Lower Saxony, with a visit to 246 Provost Company Royal Military Police, AutoBahn Control Detachment. Entering East Germany via Allied Checkpoint Alpha near helmstedt, then across the fearsome Inner German Border Death Strip. It covers the actions at the DDR/Soviet Border station at Marienborn. The threats encountered from The Stasi and the DDR VolksPolizei.

Finally arriving at Allied Checkpoint Bravo at Dreilinden in Berlin, with its famous WW2 Soviet War Memorial (Panzerdenkmal)

We Explored Berlin, Germany and the Inner German Border

Travel vlog #28 | Berlin, Germany | Filmed October 2021

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the Cold War defined the United States' World View. Germany and Berlin, in particular, were the ultimate example, divided between East and West.

From our base in Goslar, we explored a memorial to the Inner German Border and took a weekend trip to the city of Berlin; the former capital of Prussia, the German Empire, and the Third Reich and the current capital of the modern, reunified Germany.

We were curious to see what we'd find of Berlin's past and what the present city looked like.

Cold War Express | The British Military Train - Berlin

In this video documentary I tell the story of the Historic British Military Train, Berlin. And retrace its Cold War route through present day Germany, 3 decades after German Reunification, the end of The Cold War, and the train ceasing service.

The British Military Train Berlin, nicknamed The Berliner, was a Military Duty Transport Train that ran once a day from West Berlin to the City of Braunschweig in West Germany, and back again between 1945 and 1991 carrying military personnel, their families and designated British Civilians.

The British Military Train passed twice through the heavily fortified Inner German Border and Berlin Wall , and was subject to military checks by the Soviet Army, before spending 4 hours travelling through East Germany, often under surveillance from the East German Stasi. The DDR with its huge Soviet Military occupation forces, was technically Enemy Territory during the Cold War 1945 - 1989

On board, its 180 military and civilian passengers, who were locked in the train for their own safety and protected by armed British soldiers enjoyed a luxurious experince with Fine Dining and subsidized wines, provided by the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits, who also catered the famous Orient Express.

The BMT owed its existence to a binding treaty drawn up in 1945 at the end of WW2 between the Soviets and The Western allies at the Potsdam Conference; to allow military access to Allied controlled West Berlin.

From the late 1950s onwards as The Cold War intensified, the Soviet forces in East Germany and the puppet communist DDR Government found it diplomatically impossible to stop the train running, so instead they tried making its passage as difficult as possible.

Only after the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989, and withdrawal of the Soviet Army from Germany in 1991, did it bring an end to the trains purpose, although it continued to run until 1991.

Today The Berliner is remembered as a unique part of British Military History.

Beautiful Places in Germany

Germany is one such place, the beautiful European state dominantly sitting in the centre of Europe. Travellers to Germany have a multitude of places to visit, from ancient strongholds to gothic castles and keeps, modern entertainment complexes and sombre war memorials. Eat traditional German food, drink some real German beer, and then hike, bike, ski and boat your way around the beautiful German countryside, covered in forests and mountains. Shot with state of the art DJI unmanned recreational camera drones, see Germany like never before.

Germany’s history is as old as the mountains. A long past of dominant Germanic tribes existing in the areas between the river Rhine and modern day Berlin would occasionally burst forth and conquer lands both east, west and south of their borders. After warring with the Romans for many decades, the people of Germany were able to muster around the flags of the strongest tribes; the Franks and the Saxons as well as a few others. As the Franks grew in power, they annexed many other nations into what was labelled the Holy Roman Empire by its founder, Charlemagne. The Empire became a nation divided into principalities ruled by many German princes, and over the next few hundred years they guided much of Europe’s religious, scientific and philosophic development. After unification into a German Empire, Germany experienced a small revolution before the institution of the Weimar Republic. Suffering from the effects of two World Wars, and a separation of the state into two entities during the Cold War, Germany has come out of its reincarnation as the world’s 4th strongest economy, and a world leader with a very bright future.

Every visitor to Germany will visit the Reichstag, the capital, which is Berlin. Make sure to grab a beer to warm the chest before heading out to see landmarks like the Berlin Wall Memorial and the significant Brandenburg Gate. Don’t miss out on the shopping at the famous Kaufhaus des Westens, and definitely don’t miss out on the many dance and rock music festivals that are regular occurrences around the capital.

If you thought Berlin was a party then you haven’t been to Munich. Home to all sorts of Bavarian festivities, as well as the famous Oktoberfest, Munich is the ultimate German attraction if you intend on satisfying your gastric desires. Otherwise the city has a lovely park called the English Garden, as well as a historic square called the Marienplatz, both of which are must-see features.

For a real taste of traditional Germany, take a trip to Erfurt. But don’t linger too long in the city famous for its Erfurt Cathedral and Domplatz. The countryside, just a short trip away is home to the great forests of which Germany is known for. The area is home to great hiking trails through these ancient woods, and during winter, towns like Oberhof are filled with tourists eager to take to the ski-slopes.

If you’re off to Bavaria, make sure you see the legendary Neuschwanstein Castle near the city of Fussen. The castle was built by Ludwig II of Bavaria more than 150 years ago, and is probably the closest thing to a real-life fairy tale castle. Equally impressive is the Fortress Konigstein near Dresden, and is much older than Neuschwanstein, dating back to the late Frankish Holy Roman Empire. A more accessible German castle (not located at the top of a dizzyingly-high cliff) is that of Wackerbarth, and is a beautiful representation of late Saxon architecture. The most impressive architectural landmark is that natural one of the Bastei rocks by the Elbe River and mountain-range. The sandstone rocks seem to stab out from the earth and climb up to the heavens, and astoundingly, at the rocks top, lies a bridge that crosses the valley.
