Germany's Hidden Gem! This is Lüneburger Heide (+ an incredible barefoot park)
Our final leg of our summer van trip takes us to Lüneburger Heide! No, we never really had this high on a bucket list when we first made it to Germany, but many of you recommended paying a visit that we decided to do just that. The heath bloom was beautiful to see, and timed quite well with our travel itinerary. Although the area is much to big to explore in just a day or two, we still loved our experience walking and riding through the outdoor nature preserve and seeing such a unique are in Germany.
Did you also know there is a very large barefoot park as well? We had never heard of these type of parks before our time in Europe, but we loved visiting the Barfußpark Lüneburger Heide in Egestorf! Walking through mud, glass, grass, and rocks was a fun experience for us all and a happy coincidence that we stumbled upon it.

Colossos: Kampf der Giganten is an Intamin 'plug-and-play' wooden coaster built at the Heide Park amusement park in Germany. 4K Ultra-HD, 60fps on-ride POV. No trim front-row ride. The roller coaster had a major overhaul in 2019 with new effects and theming elements as well as a major track overhaul costing over $10 million. It is also likely the smoothest wooden coaster ever built. Colossos features prefabricated track, meaning that the pieces snap together to create an ultra-smooth ride experience.

Heide Park - Colossos (Holzachterbahn) - Onride [Erste Reihe / Front Row POV]
Atemberaubende Fahrt auf der schnellsten Holzachterbahn der Welt mit 120 km/h auf einer Gesamtlänge von 1344 Metern im Heide Park Resort in Soltau. Nach der Auffahrt über den Lifthill und einer 120 Grad Kurve geht es mit einer 61 Grad Neigung üver den First Drop in die Tiefe, gefolgt von 2 heftigen Airtime-Hügeln. Die Bahn, die vom Ingenieurbüro Stengel entworfen und von Intamin gebaut wurde, wurde nach Baukosten von 21 Millionen € am 13. April 2001 eröffnet. Es folgt eine Kehrtwende und ein langgezogener Hügel, auf dem Floating Airtime zu spüren ist. Der Rest der Fahrt besteht aus einer nach unten verlaufenden Spirale, 3 Bunny Hops und einer 180 Grad-Kurve. Am Ende der Fahrt wird der Zug mit Wirbelstrombremsen abgebremst und von Reibrädern wieder in die Station gebracht. Maximal treten bei der gesamten Fahrt Beschleunigungen bis zu 4,5 g auf. Außerdem wirken stellenweise bis zu -1,5 g, die Fahrgäste werden also mit der eineinhalbfachen Erdbeschleunigung aus ihren Sitzen gen Himmel gezogen.
Die Fahrzeit beträgt 2 Minuten 23 Sekunden pro Durchlauf. Es fahren zwei Züge auf der Bahn, von denen jeder 30 Personen fasst, was zu einer maximalen theoretischen Kapazität von knapp 1500 Personen pro Stunde führt. Die Fahrgäste werden doppelt gesichert, indem sie zuerst einen Sicherheitsgurt und danach den Sicherheitsbügel anlegen müssen. Die Sitzreihen eines Wagens sind im sogenannten Stadium-Seating angeordnet, die Mitfahrer sitzen also wie in einem Stadion von Reihe zu Reihe 10 cm höher, um eine bessere Sicht zu erhalten.
Bei der Planung war aufgrund der neuen Züge und Schienen nicht genau berechenbar, wie sich diese auf die Geschwindigkeit der Bahn auswirken würden und es wurde erst später klar, dass die Achterbahn schneller als geplant war. Deshalb wurden seit der Eröffnung im First Drop, sowie in den Abfahrten der ersten beiden Hills, jeweils eine Wirbelstrombremse eingebaut, die den Zug etwas herunterbremsen, um die g-Kräfte auf und zwischen den Hills erträglich zu halten. Diese Wirbelstrombremsen sind heute schaltbar ausgelegt und können von der Steuerung der Bahn nach Bedarf automatisch ein- und ausgeschaltet werden. Der Bedarf einer flexiblen Abbremsung hängt damit zusammen, dass Achterbahnen in Abhängigkeit von den Wetterverhältnissen deutliche Unterschiede in der Maximalgeschwindigkeit haben können. Bis 2003 war die Bahn die steilste Holzachterbahn der Welt.
Im Jahr 2012 wurde der obere Teil der Freiheitsstatue des Parks bei Colossos montiert. Die Achterbahn gehört nun zum Land der Vergessenen.

Onride on Colossos, a wooden roller coaster at Heide Park in Soltau, Lower Saxony, Germany. It is the first wooden roller coaster to use prefabricated track. Colossos is currently the tallest and fastest wooden roller coaster in the world with 120km/h.
Colossos is very different from a traditional wooden roller coaster because it is prefabricated. Instead of trackers cutting, shaping, and laying down the track by hand, the track is laser cut in a factory, achieving a higher degree of precision than could ever be done by hand. It is also made so that it snaps together like Lego pieces. The track also is made of more layers of wood that are tightly bonded together instead of being traditionally nailed together by hand. This has three major benefits, two for the park and the other for the riders.
The Plug and Play aspect of the coaster speeds construction, since track does not have to be completely manufactured on site. In addition, building costs are lowered due to fewer man-hours being required. The riders benefit from a coaster, that while being wooden, is nearly steel smooth. However, some roller coaster enthusiasts may find that aspect to take away from the ride since it would not have the same character as a traditional wooden roller coaster.

Heide Park Day One Vlog April 2023
Come and join us for a visit to Heide Park Resort located in Germany! In this action packed day one vlog, we experience all of the biggest rides at the park including Colossos, a spectacular wooden roller coaster. We also ride Krake, Flug der Dämonen and many more awesome attractions.
Along with that we ride the Monorail, Ghostbusters 5D and take a detailed look at the theming around this beautiful park. Also, we take a look at Toxic Garden, a re-themed ride for 2023 and explore the merchandise on offer!

Heide Park Day One Vlog May 2019
Join us as we visit Heide Park in Germany for the first time in 5 years to check out all of the changes since we last visited. In this action packed vlog from the first day of our trip, we check out all of the major rides at the park including the new for 2019, Colossos - Kampf der Giganten. Along with that we share a mix of on and off ride footage from various different rides across the park.
In our day one vlog we also share our review from the fantastic sand animation show, capture the delightful atmosphere throughout the different themed areas and much more!
