Travel from Heemstede to Haarlem | Netherlands
Heemstede is a municipality and a town in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. Heemstede formed around the Castle Heemstede that was built overlooking the Spaarne River around 1286. Before 1296, Floris V, Count of Holland, granted Heemstede as a fiefdom to Reinier of Holy. During the 14th century, a village formed near the castle, which was destroyed and rebuilt several times in this period. A resident of this castle was Adriaan Pauw, who bought it in 1620. In 1653, Bennebroek split off from Heemstede, becoming a separate fiefdom.
Growth was slow, and in 1787 Heemstede counted 196 families. Even at that early date Heemstede had already gained the reputation it has today, of being primarily a bedroom community for the cities of Haarlem and Amsterdam. Wealthy city families left the cities in the summer, escaping canal fever which caused illness from the putrid canals. As a result, many estates were built in the 17th and 18th centuries, some of which (partially) remain until today such as Oud-Berkenroede, Berkenrode, Ipenrode, Huis te Manpad, Hartekamp, Bosbeek, Meer en Bosch, Meer en Berg, and Gliphoeve.
In 1857, the municipality Berkenrode was merged with Heemstede. In 1927, the northern portion of Heemstede, including a large part of the Haarlem Forest, was in turn added to the city of Haarlem.
Haarlem is a city outside of Amsterdam in the northwest Netherlands. Once a major North Sea trading port surrounded by a defensive wall, it retains its medieval character of cobblestone streets and gabled houses. It's the center of a major flower-bulb-growing district, and famous for its outlying tulip fields, art museums and hofjes (almshouses built around leafy courtyards).

Haarlem-Holland
Haarlem ligt in de noordvleugel van de Randstad. De gemeente grenst met de klok mee aan de gemeentes Velsen, Haarlemmerliede en Spaarnwoude, Haarlemmermeer, Heemstede en Bloemendaal. Oostwaarts liggen Amsterdam (19 km) en Schiphol (13 km). De havens van IJmuiden liggen 10 km naar het noorden en de Noordzeekust ligt ongeveer 7 km naar het westen.
Haarlem heeft een belangrijke regionale functie. Het primaire verzorgingsgebied bestaat uit het noordelijke deel van de Zuid-Hollandse Bollenstreek, met in het bijzonder de gemeenten Hillegom, Zuid-Kennemerland, IJmond en een deel van de Haarlemmermeer. De stad is bisschopszetel van het Bisdom Haarlem-Amsterdam. De agglomeratie Haarlem maakt op haar beurt weer deel uit van een grotere agglomeratie, de Metropoolregio Amsterdam. Deze regio beslaat een groot deel van de noordvleugel van de Randstad en heeft meer dan 2 miljoen inwoners.
Het Spaarne is de belangrijkste rivier die door Haarlem heen stroomt. Aan het Spaarne staan veel oude loodsen, de Droste-fabriek en andere historische panden. De rivier wordt vooral in de zomermaanden veel gebruikt door pleziervaart. Ook de Mooie Nel aan de noordoostkant van de stad biedt een groot open vaarwater. Vanaf het Spaarne is via Spaarndam het Noordzeekanaal bereikbaar en via de Ringvaart zijn de plassen van Zuid-Holland te bereiken. De grachten en singels in en rondom de binnenstad zijn bereikbaar voor boten met een geringe doorvaarthoogte.
Centrum
Het stadscentrum van Haarlem, 12.000 inwoners, bestaat uit de historische binnenstad en de buurt tussen het station en de Nieuwe Gracht. De historische binnenstad, die omringd is door grachten en singels, wordt gekenmerkt door vele oude straatjes en monumenten. In het hart van het de binnenstad ligt de Grote Markt waaraan enkele bijzondere historische gebouwen staan waaronder het stadhuis, de Vleeshal en de Grote of St. Bavokerk. De skyline van de binnenstad wordt gedomineerd door deze enorme kerk met zijn bijna 80 meter hoge toren. Veel bekende musici onder wie Mozart hebben op het wereldberoemde Müllerorgel in de kerk gespeeld. De derde versie van het eerste Nederlandse vliegtuig, de Spin 3 van Anthony Fokker, vloog op een vlucht boven de Haarlemse binnenstad en rond de St. Bavokerk ter gelegenheid van Koninginnedag in 1911. Op de Grote Markt is twee keer per week markt en door het jaar heen vinden er verschillende evenementen plaats waaronder de jaarlijkse kermis. Vanaf de Grote Markt lopen in drie richtingen belangrijke winkelstraten namelijk de Grote Houtstraat, de Barteljorisstraat en de Zijlstraat. In het historisch centrum bevindt zich een aantal kleine karakteristieke winkelstraatjes, zoals de Warmoesstraat, de Schagchelstraat en de Kleine Houtstraat. De rivier het Spaarne scheidt de binnenstad in twee delen. Ten westen van de rivier ligt het grootste deel van de binnenstad. Ten oosten het deel dat ook wel de Spaarnwouderbuurt wordt genoemd. In dit deel is onder andere de enige overgebleven stadspoort van Haarlem te vinden de Spaarnwouder- of Amsterdamse Poort. Ook bevinden zich hier de molen De Adriaan en Koepelgevangenis. Beide oevers van het Spaarne worden door twee monumentale draaibruggen, een klein ophaalbruggetje genaamd de Gravestenenbrug en een moderne ophaalbrug met elkaar verbonden. Deze laatste brug, die in de volksmond de 'Verfroller' wordt genoemd, heet officieel de Lange Brug.
Veel van de gebouwen in de binnenstad stammen uit de 16e, 17e, 18e en 19e eeuw. Er is echter ook veel moderne architectuur te vinden, zoals de Toneelschuur en de nieuwbouw rond de Appelaar. De buurt die tussen de Nieuwe Gracht en het station, de Stationbuurt, werd gebouwd in de tweede helft 19e eeuw. Langs de Nieuwe Gracht staan veel grote patriciërswoningen. In de jaren '60 en '70 van de 19e eeuw kwamen de villa's aan het Kenaupark en het Ripperdapark en op de Bolwerken tot stand. Het ontwerp van deze villaparken is van de hand van de Haarlemse (tuin)architect Louis Paul Zocher. In 1908 kwam het nieuwe station aan het Stationsplein tot stand. De architectuur van het stationsgebouw is in Jugendstil, het station is een ontwerp van Dirk Margadant.

The museum is an authentically furnished house where you wander from room to room seeing the most beautiful pottery, pieces of furniture, paintings, and lavishly decorated curtains.
As this place is less touristic, it really feels like you are visiting a wealthy family.

Haarlem (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɦaːrlɛm] predecessor of Harlem in English) is a city and municipality in the Netherlands. It is the capital of the province of North Holland. Haarlem is situated at the northern edge of the Randstad, one of the most populated metropolitan areas in Europe; it is also part of the Amsterdam metropolitan area. Haarlem had a population of 161,265 in 2019.
Haarlem was granted city status or stadsrechten in 1245, although the first city walls were not built until 1270. The modern city encompasses the former municipality of Schoten as well as parts that previously belonged to Bloemendaal and Heemstede. Apart from the city, the municipality of Haarlem also includes the western part of the village of Spaarndam. Newer sections of Spaarndam lie within the neighbouring municipality of Haarlemmermeer.

Netherlands-Beautiful Haarlem
Haarlem ligt in de noordvleugel van de Randstad. De gemeente grenst met de klok mee aan de gemeentes Velsen, Haarlemmerliede en Spaarnwoude, Haarlemmermeer, Heemstede en Bloemendaal. Oostwaarts liggen Amsterdam (19 km) en Schiphol (13 km). De havens van IJmuiden liggen 10 km naar het noorden en de Noordzeekust ligt ongeveer 7 km naar het westen.
Haarlem heeft een belangrijke regionale functie. Het primaire verzorgingsgebied bestaat uit het noordelijke deel van de Zuid-Hollandse Bollenstreek, met in het bijzonder de gemeenten Hillegom, Zuid-Kennemerland, IJmond en een deel van de Haarlemmermeer. De stad is bisschopszetel van het Bisdom Haarlem-Amsterdam. De agglomeratie Haarlem maakt op haar beurt weer deel uit van een grotere agglomeratie, de Metropoolregio Amsterdam. Deze regio beslaat een groot deel van de noordvleugel van de Randstad en heeft meer dan 2 miljoen inwoners.
Het Spaarne is de belangrijkste rivier die door Haarlem heen stroomt. Aan het Spaarne staan veel oude loodsen, de Droste-fabriek en andere historische panden. De rivier wordt vooral in de zomermaanden veel gebruikt door pleziervaart. Ook de Mooie Nel aan de noordoostkant van de stad biedt een groot open vaarwater. Vanaf het Spaarne is via Spaarndam het Noordzeekanaal bereikbaar en via de Ringvaart zijn de plassen van Zuid-Holland te bereiken. De grachten en singels in en rondom de binnenstad zijn bereikbaar voor boten met een geringe doorvaarthoogte.
Centrum
Het stadscentrum van Haarlem, 12.000 inwoners, bestaat uit de historische binnenstad en de buurt tussen het station en de Nieuwe Gracht. De historische binnenstad, die omringd is door grachten en singels, wordt gekenmerkt door vele oude straatjes en monumenten. In het hart van het de binnenstad ligt de Grote Markt waaraan enkele bijzondere historische gebouwen staan waaronder het stadhuis, de Vleeshal en de Grote of St. Bavokerk. De skyline van de binnenstad wordt gedomineerd door deze enorme kerk met zijn bijna 80 meter hoge toren. Veel bekende musici onder wie Mozart hebben op het wereldberoemde Müllerorgel in de kerk gespeeld. De derde versie van het eerste Nederlandse vliegtuig, de Spin 3 van Anthony Fokker, vloog op een vlucht boven de Haarlemse binnenstad en rond de St. Bavokerk ter gelegenheid van Koninginnedag in 1911. Op de Grote Markt is twee keer per week markt en door het jaar heen vinden er verschillende evenementen plaats waaronder de jaarlijkse kermis. Vanaf de Grote Markt lopen in drie richtingen belangrijke winkelstraten namelijk de Grote Houtstraat, de Barteljorisstraat en de Zijlstraat. In het historisch centrum bevindt zich een aantal kleine karakteristieke winkelstraatjes, zoals de Warmoesstraat, de Schagchelstraat en de Kleine Houtstraat. De rivier het Spaarne scheidt de binnenstad in twee delen. Ten westen van de rivier ligt het grootste deel van de binnenstad. Ten oosten het deel dat ook wel de Spaarnwouderbuurt wordt genoemd. In dit deel is onder andere de enige overgebleven stadspoort van Haarlem te vinden de Spaarnwouder- of Amsterdamse Poort. Ook bevinden zich hier de molen De Adriaan en Koepelgevangenis. Beide oevers van het Spaarne worden door twee monumentale draaibruggen, een klein ophaalbruggetje genaamd de Gravestenenbrug en een moderne ophaalbrug met elkaar verbonden. Deze laatste brug, die in de volksmond de 'Verfroller' wordt genoemd, heet officieel de Lange Brug.
Veel van de gebouwen in de binnenstad stammen uit de 16e, 17e, 18e en 19e eeuw. Er is echter ook veel moderne architectuur te vinden, zoals de Toneelschuur en de nieuwbouw rond de Appelaar. De buurt die tussen de Nieuwe Gracht en het station, de Stationbuurt, werd gebouwd in de tweede helft 19e eeuw. Langs de Nieuwe Gracht staan veel grote patriciërswoningen. In de jaren '60 en '70 van de 19e eeuw kwamen de villa's aan het Kenaupark en het Ripperdapark en op de Bolwerken tot stand. Het ontwerp van deze villaparken is van de hand van de Haarlemse (tuin)architect Louis Paul Zocher. In 1908 kwam het nieuwe station aan het Stationsplein tot stand. De architectuur van het stationsgebouw is in Jugendstil, het station is een ontwerp van Dirk Margadant.

Today, I am sharing our short visit to Haarlem, Netherlands and our wonderful dining experience at Restaurant Mr. and Mrs in June 2019. Haarlem is the capital of the province North Holland, where many Dutch residents live. The city is about a 15-minute train ride from Amsterdam. Since we rented a car, we decided to stop by Haarlem and explored this peaceful city. We were also fortunate to dine at Restaurant Mr. and Mrs. and our experience there was absolutely amazing! I would like to give this place a 5 star rating. The meal and the wine (recommended by the chef) was phenomenal! I would highly recommend this restaurant if you’re passing by Haarlem. It will not disappoint you. We also missed a couple of lovely spots so comment below if you would like to share other attractions or if you have any questions about the city or the restaurant.
