A Tourist in Melbourne and the Yarra Valley (Australia)
Melbourne is a hub airport for Quantas and Emirates, an ideal opportunity for travellers to break their journey and visit some of the local attractions, such as the wonderful sandy beaches of Port Phillip Bay, sample a glass or two at one of the Yarra Valley wineries, take a trip on a steam train, or maybe ride one of the vintage trams around the city. Visit a zoo to get close to some of the colorful wildlife, there is even a chocolate factory with a cafe where customers can choose from an amazing array of candy, cakes, ice-cream, snacks and beverages. The riverside walkways are lined with cafes, bars and intriguing artwork. Board one of the river boats for an alternative view of the city’s attractive high rise skyline. The “Melbourne Star Observation Wheel” offers stunning aerial views over the city and surrounding suburbs, along with a commentary outlining the history of the area, as well as pointing out some of the more notable landmarks. Public transport is good with one of the largest, if not the largest tram network in the world, there are regular commuter trains out to the leafy suburbs such as Belgrave, for a trip on the delightful Puffing Billy railway where passengers can ride through the tall eucalyptus trees and ferns of the Wright Forest in a vintage railway carriage pulled by a centenarian steam locomotive. With so much to see and do, Melbourne is well worth a visit.

FREE Things To Do In Healesville + Permaculture Yarra Valley Melbourne
Located in the northeastern Yarra Valley (an hour’s drive from the Melbourne CBD, or 3 hours by tram), Healesville is a beautiful town surrounded by mountains, forests, wineries and farms.
For backpackers it’s also a great place to meet your favourite Australian animals: platypus, koala, kangaroo, Tasmanian Devil and wombat.
If you’re lucky you can also visit the Mora Mora cooperative residential community. About 50 adults and 20 children deliberately decide to live together on about 600 acres.

Healesville Sanctuary
Healesville Sanctuary is one of Australia’s most loved zoo attractions and houses thousands of Australian animals where visitors can get up close to these magnificent animals in a uniquely Australian bush setting.
Located in Healesville, the Sanctuary is only a one hour drive north-east from the Melbourne CBD. So bring your whole family and spend a day here as you interact with and learn more about Australian wildlife. The best thing about Healesville Sanctuary is that kids are FREE on weekends and Victorian Public and School Holidays.
With a focus on conservation, Healesville Sanctuary is committed to fighting wildlife extinction and promotes sustainability within the park. There are many animal exhibits that visitors can see, as well as wildlife shows and keeper demonstrations which are FREE with the cost of your admission.
The most popular attraction within the Sanctuary is certainly the ‘Spirits of the Sky’ show which is held daily at 12pm and again at 2.30pm in the Sanctuary flight arena. During the show, visitors will discover Australia’s majestic birds of prey in flight including wedge-tailed eagles, buzzards and owls. Sit and watch as these magnificent birds soar overhead and make sure you bring your camera as this is an experience you won’t want to forget.
Whilst strolling through the grounds, make sure you stop at the ‘Tales from Platypus Creek’ exhibition where Sanctuary keepers give talks about these unique marsupials daily at 11.15am and again at 1.30pm on weekends. During this show, you will see the usually reclusive platypus in all its glory. Visitors will come face to face with this shy creature as they swim, play and interact with the keeper during their talk.
Animal lovers will also love seeing wild Dingos, walking through a huge aviary and getting up close to Australia’s best-loved birds as well as stopping the Nocturnal House where you will enter the dark and secret world of Possums, Bilbies, Bandicoots and Gliders. There are also plenty of reptiles, Tasmanian devils, wombats, emus and echidnas to see within the Sanctuary.
For an extra fee, visitors can also book a special “Wild Encounters” experience which will get you a close encounter with your favourite animal. Accompanied by a keeper, you can get up close to a kangaroo, koala, dingo, emu, echidna or even a python.
There are also a number of picnic spots located within the Sanctuary, so visitors are welcome to bring their own lunch as they rest in the shade on one of the beautiful grassy areas. There are also a number of cafes and food stalls located within the Sanctuary and being within the heart of the famous Yarra Valley, you will find some of the best food, coffee and wine here.

THINGS TO DO IN THE YARRA RANGES, AND YARRA VALLEY [ MELBOURNE AUSTRALIA ]
Things to do in the Yarra ranges and Yarra Valley, Melbourne in a day.
Today we visit the Yarra ranges in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. We also visit the Yarra Valley, Healesville and Healesville Sanctuary with its many native Australian animals, including echidnas and koalas. We drive through the majestic Black Spur forest, then on to Marysville and the spectacular Steavenson Falls. The area is famous for its towering mountain ash trees, (eucaliptus regnans) amongst the tallest trees in the world, as are the California redwoods, in East Warburton. We drive through the snow capped Mount Donna Buang, the first along the Australian Alps. Lower down the mountain is the mysterious Rainforest Gallery,
The Yarra Valley Wine Region is world famous. Here we visit Hellen's Hill, cellar door, for some amazing cheese and wine tasting. Finally we visit the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery, a chocolate factory, with an amazing variety of chocolate. Make sure you try the free samples at the door.

Healesville Sanctuary Victoria | Native Birds & Animals
We visit Healesville Sanctuary, Victoria Australia, to observe all the native birds and animals. There are lots of parrots and other birds to see but we had to skip the bird show because otherwise we would have missed spending time with the black cockatoos. Perhaps we will go back one day but for now we are quite happy with the birds we did see!
There are many different animals including kangaroos, emus, koalas, snakes, lizards & fish. There is also a Bilby, which you don't often see out in the wild. We didn't see the lyrebird as the enclosure was shut down to be revamped. I have seen those in the wild and they are quite clever the way they mimic other birds. My personal favourite would have to be the little bower bird, building a bower and decorating it with little blue things. If I ever come back I might bring something for it. I was pretty excited to see this in person as I've never had the chance to before!

Unfortunately and with great sadness I inform you that dear little Lewis the Koala passed away.
Healesville Sanctuary, formally known as the Sir Colin MacKenzie Sanctuary, is a zoo specialising in native Australian animals. It is located at Healesville in rural Victoria, Australia, and has a history of breeding native animals. It is one of only two places to have successfully bred a platypus, the other being Sydney's Taronga Zoo. It also assists with a breeding population of the endangered helmeted honeyeater.
The zoo is set in a natural bushland environment where paths wind through different habitat areas showcasing wallabies, wombats, dingoes, kangaroos, and over 200 native bird varieties.
Guided tours, bird shows and information areas are available to visitors.
