August 13, 2014, we entered Ukraine from Moldova, which took an hour or so. We were keen to see the legendary Desjatkas with the 10D100 engines on track. Therefore, on August 14, 2014, we filmed (and took stills) on the track from Mykolaiv to Dolynska. The track is quiet flat and straight-on, but no help, most of the freight trains take this route. Also, some important long distance passengers take this route.

Ukraine: by train D1-715 into the Carpathians

In the Ukraninian part of the Carpathian mountains, there is a
beautiful railway from Ivano-Frankivsk to the Romanian border (Valea
Vişeului). The broad gauge is still existent to Sighetu Marmaţiei and
on back to Ukraine, but is not in best technical shape. Nowadays,
regular train traffic is from Ivano-Frankivsk to Rachiv only. There is
one loco-hauled train to Rachiv, but that is running in the night
hours. During the day, the classic Ganz-Mávag DMU class D1 realise
passenger transportation in the remote region. Trains are full of
passengers, tourism is expanding in the region. Hopefully, cross border
traffic to Romania will be reopened in the future.

Ukraine UZ 2014, part 2: Snihurivka

On 2014-08-14, we went to the track (Ϻиколаїв / Херсон) - Снігурівка - Апостолове ((Mikolaїv -/Cherson-) Snihurivka- Apostolove), which is more scenic than the Миколаїв (Mikolaiv)- Долинська (Dolynska) line. Unfortunately, freight train frequency was low. The two pairs of fast trains were impressive, though (No. 298/297 Херсон- Київ (Cherson- Kiev), and No. 375/376 Харків- Херсон (Charkiv- Cherson)). Enthusiasts of K6S310DR engines will love the sound of the freight train in the middle of the clip (CME3).

Tourist Carpathian narrow-gauge panoramic tram, Ukraine

A tourist Carpathian narrow-gauge panoramic tram is situated in Vyhoda, Dolynskyi district, Ivano-Frankivsk region, Ukraine, Europe.
Narrow-gauge tram was built by Austrian baron Leopold von Popper during the reign of Austrian-Hungarian Empire.

The aim of its building was transportation of the wood.
During the trip on the Tram by the accomponying of the excursion and live Folk Music you will see picturesque landscapes, pure springs and mountain waterfalls.

There are two variants of tram routs: for half day (classical route) and for the full day (Mountain route).
You can see the detailed timetable of the route and rate on the website of Carpathian panoramic tram.

The place of the tram’s departure is near the Monument of the Tram.
We recommend you to book the trip by Carpathian Tram in advance.

Timber trains in Vysočina

In Ždírec nad Doubravou on the line nr. 238 Havlíčkův Brod - Pardubice, a huge sawmill requires loads of timber. ČD Cargo is running 3 trains per working day, starting in Brod, transporting wood to the sawmill. Also, wood products are returned vice versa. The trains to Ždírec go slightly uphill - decent work is required from the locos. In the video, see ČD Cargo kocouři (tomcats) 742.107, 742.247 and 742.334 on heavy duty. 742.107 is the one with the yellow stripe according to the last ČSD outfit of 1988.

V Ždírci nad Doubravou (SŽDC 238 Havlíčkův Brod - Pardubice) veľká píla vytvára veľký dopyt po dreve. ČD Cargo prevádzkuje 3 vlaky s drevom denne z Brodu do Ždírca nad Doubravou, a spracované drevo je vlakom prepravované opačným smerom. Trať smerom do Ždírca mierne stúpa a preto sa od rušňov vyžaduje ich plné nasadenie. V tomto videu vidíte kocúrov ČD Cargo 742.107, 742.247 a 742.334 na ťažkých výkonoch. Rušeň 742.107 má ešte žltý pruh z čias ČSD náterov z roku 1988.

Wigierska Narrow Gauge Railway, Poland 2022

This ten kilometre long railway starts at Płociczno-Tartak and runs to Krusznik through the picturesque Augustów Forest & the Wigry National Park of North Eastern Poland.

The line was opened in 1926 to serve the Forestry industry and was originally 36km in length. In 1991, the restored line was entered into the Polish register of monuments. Stops along the line allow passenges to walk to the shoreline of Lake Wigry through areas where logs were once hauled from the water and up onto rail wagons. Old log wagon underframes have been repurposed to carry passengers for the current tourist operations.


Trasa Wigierskiej Kolei Wąskotorowej liczy 10 kilometrów, rozpoczyna się w Płociczno-Tartaku i biegnie do Krusznika poprzez malowniczą Puszczę Augustowską oraz Wigierski Park Narodowy w północno-wschodniej Polsce.

Linia zostala otwarta w 1926 roku jako leśna kolej wąskotorowa i sluzyla do transportu drewna z wyrębu. Pierwotnie byla dlugosci 36 kilometrow. W 1991 roku została wpisana do rejestru zabytków. Postoje wzdluz trasy pozwalaja pasazerom na spacer do Jeziora Wigry do miejsc gdzie niegdys drewno bylo wyciagane z wody i przetransportowywane na wagony lesnej kolei. Stare ramy wagonow obecnie sluza do transportu turystow.

Vapeur sur voie étroite en Pologne

Il y a de moins en moins de locomotives à voie étroite utilisables, c’est calme autour des lignes à voie étroite polonaise. Cependant, la situation s’améliore légèrement en 2016. La ligne de Znin est très jolie et leur loco aussi.

Comme d’habitude nous allons faire en sorte que l’authentique soit mis en valeur, comme si nous étions sur les lignes polonaises il y a 20 à 35 années en arrière. Les marquages d’époque (PKP) remplaceront les marquages des nouveaux propriétaires. Fidèles à nos habitudes nous profiterons des premiers rayons de soleil pour admirer le panache, une session de pause de nuit est aussi prévue.
Lever de soleil 5h30, coucher 20h10.

Description de la ligne

Znin, l'ancien réseau (600 mm)

Excepté pour le trafic touristique, les activités régulières des PKP ont cessé au milieu des années 1990. A Znin le premier train touristique a roulé dès la fin des années 1970. Malheureusement toutes les voitures ont été reconstruites et repeintes de manières « bariolées » et ne peuvent être utilisées pour notre train.

Sur les 76kms de la ligne d’origine, il ne reste que 12 kms, de Znin à Gasawa. Notre locomotive sera Px38 805. Cette 0-4-0 est peinte en noir, comme elle était dans ses dernières années d'utilisation régulière. Elle a été peinte en vert pour un certain nombre d'années d'exploitation touristique, ainsi que quelques années en service régulier.

Le musée du chemin de fer est à Wenecja. Pratiquement toutes les locomotives sont peintes en vert qui était la couleur commune d'une grande partie des locomotives à vapeur polonaise.

Le paysage de la ligne est très rural, assez plat mais avec quelques vallons lacs forêts et petites routes étroites.

Znin n'a qu'une seule locomotive à vapeur Px38 en état de fonctionnement. Il y a une deuxième loco à vapeur utilisable dans Znin, un type Las 0-6-0. Ce type de locomotive était utilisé principalement pour shunter et desservir le moulin à sucre dans Znin, mais rarement sur la ligne.

Narrow Gauge Steam in Poland

Since fewer and fewer narrow gauge locomotives are now serviceable it’s become very quiet around the Polish narrow gauge lines. However, the situation may become slightly better in 2016. The line at Znin is really very nice and their loco is too.

Our focus lies on authentic trains which could have been seen some 20 to 35 years ago on Polish narrow gauge lines. As far as possible we’ll replace the names of the new owners with the original PKP (Polish State Railway) lettering. As usual we’ll use the beautiful early morning light to be rewarded with steam exhaust from the morning chill and we’re also planning some night shots. Sunrise in Poznan is at 05.33, sunset at 20.09 hrs (April 25th).

Line Description

Znin, the former Zniner Kreisbahn (600 mm)

Except for seasonal tourist traffic this once large railway network ceased regular operation in the mid 1990’s. The first tourist train ran here as early as the late 1970’s. Unfortunately, almost all the coaches have been rebuilt as colourful, large windowed or open tourist coaches which have nothing in common with the regular trains, so we cannot use them for our train.

Of the once 76 km line, there remains only 12 km, from Znin (Znin) to Gasawa (Gonsawa). Our locomotive will be Px38 805. This 0-8-0 is painted in black, as it used to be in its last years of regular use. It was painted green for a number of years in tourist operation as well as some years in regular service.

The museum of the railway is in Wenecja. Virtually all locos there are painted green which was the common colour of a large part of the Polish steam loco fleet.

The line passes though rural countryside, mostly flat but with a few hilly parts. Large fields, little lakes, small forests and narrow roads are the surroundings of our line.

Znin has only one serviceable Px38 steam locomotive. There is a second serviceable steam loco in Znin, a 0-6-0 type “Las”. This type of locomotive was in use mainly for shunting and serving the sugar mill in Znin, but rarely on the line.
