I start off buying a sombrero from a couple that have never left Trinidad and explain their difficulties in buying materials for their business. I then head to the local store to show the limited stock they have and how it's impossible for locals to buy anything because the stores don't accept the national currency. Ridiculous I know. After drinking a Cancanchara we get a bicycle taxi to the housing projects where tourists don't go to show a different side to Trinidad. We ascend a roof through a tiny hole and get shown photos of La Trova when the island was a popular tourist destination.

Jamaica ; Jamaican Patois: Jumieka) is an island country situated in the Caribbean Sea. Spanning 10,990 square kilometres (4,240 sq mi) in area, it is the third-largest island of the Greater Antilles and the Caribbean (after Cuba and Hispaniola). Jamaica lies about 145 kilometres (90 mi) south of Cuba, and 191 kilometres (119 mi) west of Hispaniola (the island containing the countries of Haiti and the Dominican Republic); the British Overseas Territory of the Cayman Islands lies some 215 kilometres (134 mi) to the north-west.

Originally inhabited by the indigenous Taíno peoples, the island came under Spanish rule following the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1494. Many of the indigenous people either were killed or died of diseases, after which the Spanish brought large numbers of African slaves to Jamaica as labourers. The island remained a possession of Spain until 1655, when England (later Great Britain) conquered it, renaming it Jamaica. Under British colonial rule Jamaica became a leading sugar exporter, with a plantation economy dependent on the African slaves and later their descendants. The British fully emancipated all slaves in 1838, and many freedmen chose to have subsistence farms rather than to work on plantations. Beginning in the 1840s, the British began using Chinese and Indian indentured labour to work on plantations. The island achieved independence from the United Kingdom on 6 August 1962.

With 2.9 million people, Jamaica is the third-most populous Anglophone country in the Americas (after the United States and Canada), and the fourth-most populous country in the Caribbean. Kingston is the country's capital and largest city. The majority of Jamaicans are of Sub-Saharan African ancestry, with significant European, East Asian (primarily Chinese), Indian, Lebanese, and mixed-race minorities. Due to a high rate of emigration for work since the 1960s, there is a large Jamaican diaspora, particularly in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The country has a global influence that belies its small size; it was the birthplace of the Rastafari religion, reggae music (and associated genres such as dub, ska and dancehall), and it is internationally prominent in sports, most notably cricket, sprinting and athletics.

Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean. It lies between latitudes 17° and 19°N, and longitudes 76° and 79°W. Mountains dominate the interior: the Don Figuerero, Santa Cruz, and May Day mountains in the west, the Dry Harbour Mountains in the centre, and the John Crow Mountains and Blue Mountains in the east, the latter containing Blue Mountain Peak, Jamaica's tallest mountain at 2,256 m. They are surrounded by a narrow coastal plain. Jamaica only has two cities, the first being Kingston, the capital city and centre of business, located on the south coast and the second being Montego Bay, one of the best known cities in the Caribbean for tourism, located on the north coast. Kingston Harbour is the seventh-largest natural harbour in the world,[99] which contributed to the city being designated as the capital in 1872. Other towns of note include Portmore, Spanish Town, Savanna la Mar, Mandeville and the resort towns of Ocho Ríos, Port Antonio and Negril.

Mineral Height to Vere, Clarendon via Halse Hall and Hayes.

Halse Hall is a plantation great house in Clarendon, Jamaica.

During the Spanish occupation of Jamaica the estate was known as Hato de Buena Vista. In 1655, following the English capture of Jamaica the site was given to Major Thomas Halse who came from Barbados with Penn and Venables. Here he raised hogs, grazed cattle and built Halse Hall. The house had thick walls and served as the centre of the estate and a rallying point for defence. At the time of Thomas Halse death in 1702, the Great House was just a single-storey building. By the late 1740s the building was owned by his son, Francis Saddler Halse, who developed the property into a more imposing and beautiful two-storey structure. A new entrance was erected, accessed by an elaborate arrangement of stone steps flanked by columns and capped with a fanlight. A peaked portico was added later.

The Halse Hall Burial-Ground contains a tomb of the Halse family— Major Thomas Halse (d. 1702) and Thomas Halse (d. 1727).

The property belonged to Henry De la Beche who stayed there during 1823–24, while he made his geological survey of Jamaica. His Notes on the present condition of the negroes in Jamaica was based on his experiences on the estate. In December 1835 the estate was owned by the Hibbert family who received £3,523 11s 9d compensation when the 172 enslaved Africans were emancipated.

In 1969 it was purchased by Alcoa Minerals of Jamaica who added another wing. Halse Hall is the oldest English building in Jamaica which is still used as a residence.

Hayes is a settlement in Jamaica. It has a population of 10,639 as of 2011.

Spalding lies with-in a rich agricultural region in the parish of Clarendon. Surrounded by sugar plantations, Spalding is located along the main road connecting the plantations to the cities of Mandeville, to the Southwest, and May Pen, to the Southeast. Spalding housed a post office, bridging the gap between rural plantations and larger cities.

EDUCATION
There are five educational institutions with-in Spalding: Spalding High School, Spalding Primary, Spalding Library, and the Knox Complex of Schools (Knox Junior School, Knox College, and Knox Community College).

A unique relationship exists between Spalding High School and Knox Complex of Schools. Spalding High School represents an education system built on a faulty foundation damaged by colonialism, while the other represents a beacon of education in Jamaica created with a post-colonial method of practice. Spalding High School began as a non-traditional educational program and was viewed as a school of convenience. Since its origin, Spalding High School has been under-equipped for success in modern education. Although it has found increasing success year by year, the effects of colonialism hinders its abilities in the future.

The Chosen Few (reggae group) is from Kingston, Jamaica, formed in 1969 and were popular until the mid-1980s.

The Chosen Few evolved from the Federals, with the latter's Franklin Spence and David Scott joined by Noel Bunny Brown and Richard McDonald.

They initially recorded reggae covers of songs by artists such as Blue Mink and The Delfonics for producer Derrick Harriott.

Scott left the group to embark on a solo career as a deejay, to be replaced by Busty Brown, formerly of the Messengers.

The line-up changed again, with McDonald being replaced by Errol Brown, the group working with producer Lloyd Charmers and enjoying hits with versions of the Stylistics' People Make the World Go Round among others, followed in 1973 by the album Hit After Hit.

This was followed in 1975 by Everybody Plays the Fool and in 1976 by the Miami-recorded Night and Day album (also known as The Chosen Few in Miami), mixing reggae on one side with soul on the other, and featuring guest performances from members of KC and the Sunshine Band.

Their success in the 1970s saw them touring the United States, Canada, and England.

The group continued in the 1980s, with Franklin Spence and Errol Brown joined by Michael Deslandes, Barry White/Isaac Hayes
guitarist Emmett North Jr., recorded and performed with them around London and UK also their band leader from 1981-1984.
