This week I visit the last main spot in South Gobi, the flaming cliffs, and then make my way up towards central Mongolia to visit Orkhon waterfall. Bit of a pain in the ass to get there, but struggling made me meet some amazing people! The last part was filmed in Harhorin, the ancient capitol.

Erdene Zuu Monastery
Erdene Zuu Monastery is a must-visit destination in Mongolia for tourists interested in history, religion, and architecture. Here's some information to help you plan your visit:
Location: The monastery is located in the Kharkhorin sum of the Ovorkhangai Province, about 360 km (224 miles) west of Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia.
History: Erdene Zuu Monastery was established in 1586 by Abtai Sain Khan, the ruler of the Khalkha Mongols, and was the first Buddhist monastery in Mongolia. The monastery was damaged and destroyed several times throughout history, but it was restored in the 18th century and has been preserved since then.
Architecture: The monastery features a unique blend of Mongolian and Tibetan architectural styles, with white walls, red and gold roofs, and intricate carvings and paintings. The monastery complex includes several temples, stupas, and other structures, including the Three Great Manchurian Gates, the largest of which is decorated with 108 stupas.
Things to do: Visitors can explore the monastery complex, admire the architecture and artwork, and participate in Buddhist rituals and ceremonies. There are also several nearby attractions, including the ruins of the ancient city of Karakorum, the former capital of the Mongol Empire.

First I'll be in Tsertseleg to enjoy Nadaam, and then I'll check out my favorite spot in the country so far, Therkiin Tsagaan Nuur, also known as white lake.
The last bit is filmed in the most famous spot in the north, Khovskol lake.

KHARKHORIN MONGOLIA HIKE 10/15/2018

Day 2 began with a beautiful sunrise and the milking of the goats with the nomadic family. It was then followed by a scrumptious breakfast of goat mil and an assortment of milk products. We continued our journey to the Ovgon Monastery located in the valley of the Koghno Khan National Park and then on to the Erdene Zuu Monastery of Kharkhorin. After a brief visit into town we ended the day with a beautiful sunset from the Imperial Map Monument located on hill overlooking the town and the Orkhon Valley. See you Tomorrow !!!

세계를 호령했던 대 제국의 수도, 하르호린. 그러나 지금은 사원 하나만 덩그러니 남아 초라하게 다가온다. 이곳에 수도를 세우기 시작한 것은 칭기즈 칸인데, 1236년 아들 우구데이 칸 대에 이르러서야 공사를 마쳤다. 그러나 이곳이 중심이 되었던 시간은 잠시. 손자인 쿠빌라이 칸은 1271년 수도를 북경으로 옮긴다. “1586년에 아브테상칸이 하르호린 왕궁을 10분의 1로 축소해서 에르덴조 사원을 세웠습니다. 현재 이 사원의 넓이가 400㎡니까 실제 하르호린의 크기는 4㎢로 추정됩니다.” 라마 불교 사원인 이곳은 담장을 따라 108개의 불탑을 세우고 사방에 문을 두었다. 사원 안에는 3개의 불전이 있는데 각기 어린시절, 청년기, 그리고 성인 모습의 부처가 모셔져 있다. 에르덴조는 백 가지 보물을 뜻한다. 박물관에는 불가의 보물들이 전시되어 있다. 몽골 제국의 영화를 전해 주기에는 너무 초라한 모습이다. 한때 이곳은 1000명이 넘는 라마승이 거주하는 거대한 사원이었다는데, 지금은 몇 십 명의 스님들만이 명맥을 이어 올 뿐이다. 대 제국을 이루었음에도 다른 나라의 보물들을 약탈해오지 않은 것은 유목민이었기 때문일까, 라마 불교의 영향일까 생각에 잠겨 본다.

We were so fortunate to experience a rural Naadam festival in Kharkhorin, Mongolia. These events have a county fair-like vibe, but carry centuries of heritage with them and their traditional games of wrestling, archery, and horse racing. However, bounce houses may not have been a part of them during Genghis Khan's time! ????

Visiting Kharkhorin and Erdene Zuu monastery & museum in Mongolia
We visited the Erdenezuu Monastery & museum in Mongolia, first built in 1585 adjacent to the capital of the Mongol Empire, Kharkhorum. The grounds are surrounded by a wall with 108 stupas, making the wall a 108-bead mala of sorts!
