Harbin City Ice Festival - Winter Travel in China

Harbin is a city in Northeastern China with a population of over 5 million people. While it’s a popular travel destination for tourists all year round, things really get busy in Winter. This is the time of Harbin Ice and Snow festival, which usually attracts millions of visitors.

Thousands of workers and artists prepare for many weeks in bitterly cold conditions, before the festival usually opens in early January. Most of the festivities focus around a few designated theme parks, but there are activities all over the city.

I traveled to the Harbin ice festival in January 2019, and spent several days exploring the city and the theme parks. While the day time was already spectacular, the evenings became almost magical when most of the sculptures were lit up with beautiful neon lights. The freezing temperatures seemed challenging, but actually only added to the atmosphere.

Top 10 Places to Visit in China - Travel Documentary

China is one of the most fascinating travel destinations in the world, and in this video I will share with you my personal top 10 best places to visit.

From the ruins of the Great Wall to vibrant megacities. From surreal mountain landscapes to charming riverside villages. Today’s China is a beautiful, complicated, and captivating place.

I spent more than 18 months in China, spread over the course of a decade and a half. In the last years, I started filming the places that I traveled to, using regular cameras and drones. All footage in this travel documentary is shot by myself between 2010 and 2019.

Here's a brief overview of the places in this video.

We start this journey in the stunning riverside village of Fenghuang in central China. The wooden stilt houses are a spectacular sight, and the backstreets are still filled with old world charm. We then continue to Harbin, best known for its Winter tourism. Millions of people usually flock here to visit the amazing Ice and Snow Festival, to admire beautiful sculptures and palaces.

Yangshuo is another spot not to miss, mostly for its mesmerizing mountain landscape of limestone peaks. It’s a great place to witness life in the countryside, and has a relaxed vibe. After Yangshuo we travel to Beijing, the nation’s capital city. The impressive Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven Park are two main highlights. And the nearby Great Wall of China is truly a sight to behold.

Zhangjiajie is the next destination on my list, and one of China’s most beautiful national parks. It formed the inspiration for the popular movie Avatar. You can get an aerial perspective from the many walkways, and don't miss out on the Glass Bridge here, if you dare at least. I continue my journey to Lhasa, the spiritual heartland of Tibet, and a place that left a deep impression on me. Take into a account that foreign travelers can only visit Tibet as part of a group tour.

Shanghai is a unique city with a jaw-dropping modern skyline, but also has some impressive historic architecture. It’s a busy place to visit, but also has many laidback neighborhoods and quiet streets. Yuanyang, on the other hand, is quintessential rural China, with an epic landscape of rice terraces. It’s a good place to meet some of the minorities living in the South of the country, and eat some local food.

I continue my travels in Qingdao, one of China’s most scenic coastal cities, located on the Yellow Sea. Many Chinese tourists come here to enjoy the beach and eat fresh seafood, but I was particularly impressed by the historic German buildings. I finish this journey in Hong Kong, easily one of my favorite cities in the world, and a perfect fusion between East and West.

China, the gateway to East Asia, is a fascinating country. It is an ancient civilization that gave the world Peking Man, gunpowder and noodles. Visitors making their first trip to China usually stick to the larger cities. More experienced visitors to the Middle Kingdom will strike out in other directions, where traveling may be a bit more frustrating because of the language barrier, but most definitely doable for independent travelers. Our first time in Harbin, China! We came for the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival 2024!
Harbin is also known as China's ice city. It is the number one tourist destination in China at the moment. We did not expect this in China, but Harbin blew our minds completely! How did China build this ice city? It was so impressive and spectacular.
China is always one step ahead of the world. We have never even seen this kind of event in Canada. They don't only display ice sculptures, but they have massive ice architectures. Including what look like castles and temples. There are many cold weather and ice activities such as sliding and tubing. We were so happy to be here as Harbin has been viral on social media. How to make the most out of your winter trip to Harbin!

Many people travel to the province of Heilongjiang to visit its capital Harbin. Harbin is the heart of the province and it is very the spectacular Snow and Ice Sculpture Festival takes place. Harbin is a must see place in China! The city has more to offer though than just the snow and ice sculptures.

It's nice to visit the Sofia Cathedral for example and you can skip a stroll along Zhongyang street. As you walk down that street you also have to eat some of the local snacks!

If you have some more time, consider a trip to Yabuli, China Snow Town, or both. Yabuli is great for those who like to ski and it's a perfect day trip destination as it is only 1,5 hours away from Harbin. China Snow Town is a super cute town with enormous piles of snow on the houses. It's a nice place to walk around and enjoy nature.

[4K] The amazing 25th China Harbin Ice and Snow Festival |we arrived as promised with a fiery heart.

Harbin, the capital city of Heilongjiang Province, has become the most popular city in mainland China in just one month. Yes, the most popular, bar none.

The winter in Harbin is long and cold. Although there has been an Ice and Snow World every year in the past, it has never attracted so much attention. But this year, Harbin has ignited people's fiery hearts in this cold winter. In this issue, we will take you on a comprehensive tour of the Harbin Ice and Snow World.

Harbin Ice and Snow World was founded in 1999 as an event organized by the Harbin Municipal Government to welcome the new millennium. It is now the 25th edition. The Ice and Snow World built on the banks of the Songhua River not only has beautiful ice sculptures, but also has a passionate disco stage, dazzling ice car stunts, igloo hot pot, etc., allowing everyone to dispel the cold in winter.

The look and feel of the Ice and Snow World is very different during the day and at night. It is recommended that you enter the park in the afternoon, so that you can not only appreciate the crystal clear ice sculptures under the sun, but also see the colorful ice city reflected by the colorful lights.
Ice and Snow World official website:

In the world of ice and snow, innocent children, lovers holding hands, couples accompanying each other, friends, and people from different places gather together on this cold winter day and open their hearts. We are brothers and sisters.

You extended the invitation with good intentions, and I came as promised with heart palpitating. I hope this city will get better and better, and I hope the simple and kind people will get better and better.

EXPLORING HARBIN, CHINA 哈尔滨: China Travel Vlog | Ice & Snow World | Volga Manor | Allison Paige

WATCH IN 2160p! :)
Today, I traveled to the coldest city in China...the city of Harbin! 哈尔滨市 This city is famed for its International Snow and Ice Festival, snowy winters, and average temperatures of -24°C ~ -13°C (-11°F ~ 9°F) during the month of January.

My friends and I had the most incredible time exploring the Harbin Ice and Snow World: one of the four largest ice and snow festivals in the WORLD! This is a place I have dreamed of visiting for years and it did not disappoint. We spent our first night exploring the colorful, illuminated ice and snow sculptures that covered 800,000 square meters. Each corner held a new spectacular attraction as well as offerings to ride bikes, ice skate, and my favorite, sled down a giant ice slide!

On our second day, we ventured to Volga Manor: A park named after Volga River in Russia which draws its inspiration from Russian architecture, arts, and cuisine. Each building we saw was breathtaking!
