Shanghai is one of the most fascinating cities in China, and in this video I share my personal top 10 places to visit in this amazing city.
Few cities in the world evoke so much imagination as the largest city in China. Rich and glamorous on one corner, rough around the edges on another, Shanghai is truly one of the most fascinating places in the country. Located in the East of China, Shanghai should be high on any traveler’s list.
The video starts off on the Bund, a spectacular waterfront promenade located right in the center of the city. It provides a stunning contrast between historic colonial architecture and the awe-inspiring modern skyline of Pudong on the other side of the Huangpu river. Here, you can get some of the best views across the city. After Pudong, I take you to Nanjing street for some shopping, followed by a moment of calm in the rebuilt Jing’An Temple.
After walking through the People’s (central) park where I encounter a ‘marriage market’, we search for pockets of old Shanghai. These authentic neighborhoods are fast disappearing, as development of apartment towers and shopping malls takes over.
With enough time, it’s possible to plan a few day trips out of Shanghai. Some of my favorite ones are Suzhou, Zhujiajiao, and the impressive Yangshan Port (Shanghai's main container terminal, or harbor). Back in the city, we travel to the outskirts to visit a ‘bicycle graveyard’ and visit a few trade shows. Probably not your regular 'tourist attraction', but interesting places for those interested in doing business in China. The video finishes at the former Expo site, taking you back to one of the largest events ever held in China.

At the end of December, Miu and I headed to Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province for a relaxing weekend away. Just an hour from Shanghai, Hangzhou is a popular day trip for Shanghai residents and tourists alike. Popular for the world-renowned Zhejiang University, the breath taking West Lake Scenic Area, and the Meijiawu and Longjing Tea Plantations, it’s definitely on my list of must-see cities. Even Marco Polo thought the same!

This modern vibrant city, which is situated only an hour away from Shanghai by train, is not only an important economic, political, and cultural center of China but also one of the Seven Ancient Capital Cities, with a rich history of about 2,500 years. Here you can discover a secret of Chinese silk or visit the birthplace of the most famous green tea in China.
The must-visit place in Hangzhou is West Lake – the symbol of the city. This 6,5 square kilometers area has been an inspiration for many famous poets and artists, and it is regarded as one of the most beautiful sights in China. There you can find traditional temples, ancient pagodas, pavilions, splendid gardens, and ornamental trees, as well as causeways and artificial islands. Do not miss visiting gorgeous tea plantations. Hangzhou is also known as the Capital of Tea in China, and since ancient times, it has been a famous tea-production base. Dragon Well (Longjing) tea – the most famous tea in the Country - is being produced here. It is collected mostly by hand and ranked first among China's top 10 teas due to its high quality.
Approximately an hour's drive from the city is Wuzhen - one of the top six water towns in China. This charming place attracts many tourists with more than 1,000 years of history, restored Chinese architecture, various museums, and exhibitions, as well as its restaurants and souvenir shops. Be sure not to miss the unique gondola ride along the ancient canal and the magnificent night scenery in Wuzhen. You will certainly be blown away by the colorful illumination of the whole town.
