A trip on Göta Älv (in Göteborg/ Gothenburg) The Göta älv (Swedish pronunciation: [ˈjø̌ːta ˈɛlv]; River of (the) Geats) is a river that drains lake Vänern into the Kattegat, at the city of Gothenburg, on the western coast of Sweden. The Göta älv is located in Götaland, with the river itself being a site of early Geatish settlement. Gothenburg Swedish: Göteborg is the second-largest city in Sweden, fifth-largest in the Nordic countries, and capital of the Västra Götaland County.
Gothenburg was founded as a heavily fortified, primarily Dutch, trading colony, by royal charter in 1621 by King Gustavus Adolphus. In addition to the generous privileges (e.g. tax relaxation) given to his Dutch allies from the then-ongoing Thirty Years' War, the king also attracted significant numbers of his German and Scottish allies to populate his only town on the western coast. The city was named Göteborg in the city's charter in 1621 and simultaneously given the German and English name Gothenburg. The Swedish name was given after the Göta älv, called Göta River in English, and other cities ending in -borg. In the 18th century, fishing was the most important industry. However, in 1731, the Swedish East India Company was founded, and the city flourished due to its foreign trade with highly profitable commercial expeditions to China. The harbour developed into Sweden's main harbour for trade towards the west, and when Swedish emigration to the United States increased, Gothenburg became Sweden's main point of departure for these travellers. The impact of Gothenburg as a main port of embarkation for Swedish emigrants is reflected by Gothenburg, Nebraska, a small Swedish settlement in the United States.
With the 19th century, Gothenburg evolved into a modern industrial city that continued on into the 20th century. The population increased tenfold in the century, from 13,000 (1800) to 130,000 (1900). In the 20th century, major companies that developed included SKF (1907) and Volvo. By the shore of the Göta Älv at Lilla Bommen is The Göteborg Opera. It was completed in 1994. The architect Jan Izikowitz was inspired by the landscape and described his vision as Something that makes your mind float over the squiggling landscape like the wings of a seagull.

For more than thirty years the Gothenburg suburb of Hammarkullen has been host of an independant local carnival. Originally started by people with roots in South America, the carnival now also has elements from the Near East, the Balkan and Africa.
The Hammarkullen-Carnival stretches through four days in May. Though appreciated by many Gothenburgians, it has not always received much support from city authorities and the media. It is frequently insinuated that such exotic and lively festivities must come in a package with unruly behavior, alcoholic intoxication, crime and confrontations between different youth-gangs.
Admittedly, all this exists in Sweden, as elsewhere, yet the Carnival has an impressive record of a very low level of these undesirable elements.
Thanks to all the people who make the event possible year after year and who have helped create something new and rather unique in this country lacking a carnival tradition of its own.

Västra Frölunda, sometimes referred to as just Frölunda, is one of 21 boroughs in the city of Gothenburg, Sweden. It is located in the south western part of the city, and is the smallest of the boroughs with a population of 12,855 (2004) on 3.72 square kilometres, although the term Frölunda generally is used for a much wider area covering almost all the city's western suburbs.

August 6-11, 2019. Open to everyone and totally free.
With more than 1 million visitors Gothenburg Culture Festival is one of Scandinavia’s biggest cultural festivals. During the festival that takes place August 6-11, the streets of Gothenburg are transformed into festival stages where the visitors free of charge can enjoy a vast range of cultural experiences: opera, art, music, street performances, craft work, theatre, literature and film. Next to gastronomic culture from all over the world you can find internationally renowned musical acts as well as local bands.
This year the festival has the theme Voice & Music, which will be highly visible through the collaboration with European Choir Games – one of the largest choir festivals in Europe, that will be held in Gothenburg August 3-10.
Gothenburg Culture Festival works for sustainability in three dimensions: ecological, social and financial. The festival meets the criteria for Fairtrade City Göteborg and all food vendors at the festival meet high environmental requirements. All electricity used at the festival comes from renewable sources.
Gothenburg Culture Festival 2019 is produced by Göteborg & Co with support from the City of Gothenburg and the Trade and Industry Group at Göteborg & Co. Göteborg & Co is a municipal company of the City of Gothenburg. Gothenburg Culture Festival also receives financial support from its partners, and the program is presented in collaboration with the art and culture community of Gothenburg and the region of West Sweden.
