Historical Tour of Medieval Hainburg an der Donau (Niederösterreich, Austria)
While trekking between the three hills of the Hundsheimer Berg, the Schlossberg and the Braunsberg, we explored the ruins of the medieval Heimenburg castle and the old town of Hainburg and der Donau itself. In the old town, we looked into the history of the three surviving gates along the 2.5km long 13th Century medieval city wall before getting a chance to walk alongside the Danube and into a part of the Donau Aue National Park. On the way up towards the Braunsberg, which was once home to a group of ancient celts, we also got a chance to visit the ruins of the 12th Century Röthelstein castle.

The Braunsberg and the Thebener Kogel opposite in Slovakia represent the Hainburg or Hungarian gate of the Danube river.The breakthrough valley at Braunsberg is a geological link between the Alps and the Carpathians.
A road leads from Hainburg to the summit. The Braunsberg offers an excellent view of the Hundsheimer Mountains, the Danube and the city of Bratislava and its surroundings, as well as far into the Marchfeld. On the mountain is the memorial of the Carpathian Germans in memory of their old homeland in Slovakia.

Hainburg Castle, locally known as Hainburg, Heimenburg or Heimoburg, lies on a mountain in the town of Hainburg an der Donau, in the province of Lower Austria in Austria.
This is a small town in the east of Austria.
The Hainburg Castle stands on the Schlossberg Hill. It was built in 1050.
The castle complex consists of the remains of a huge gate,
courtyard, palace, and residential tower.
It is one of the best-preserved city fortifications in Europe.
From the top, a beautiful panoramic view of Hainburg,
the Donau-Auen National Park, and Bratislava opens up.
There are three roads leading to the castle: a cart road, a convenient hiking trail, and a winding path through the parade ground.

A visit to Hainburg an der Donau, Pressburger Bahn
Hainburg an der Donau is a small town in the Lower Austrian industrial district on the border with Slovakia. The city is known for the well-preserved city wall with the city gates, through which the Vienna-Bratislava trunk road ran until 2006. The Hainburg Mountains (Braunsberg, Hundsheimer Berg and Spitzerberg) are the westernmost foothills of the Carpathians and, together with the Thebener Kogel, form the Hainburg Gate; a narrow valley of the Danube.
There are three train stations in Hainburg:
Hainburg an der Donau - culture factory
Hainburg an der Donau - passenger station
Hainburg an der Donau - Hungarian Gate
All of these train stations can be reached with the S-Bahn line S7 without having to change trains from Vienna; Approach u.a. possible in Floridsdorf, Praterstern and Wien Mitte-Landstraße (not the main station or Meidling!). The trains run every 30 minutes between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. and stop at e.g. also in Schwechat, Vienna Airport, Fischamend, Petronell-Carnuntum and Bad Deutsch-Altenburg. Terminus of the S7 is Wolfsthal. The journey from Wien Mitte to Hainburg takes a little over an hour, and you can take your bike with you. Fare 11.60 euros in the VOR (Verkehrsverbund Ost Region) or 9.20 euros from the core zone border if you have a ticket for Vienna.
For a visit to the old town or the Schlossberg with the Heymenburg, the stops at the passenger station and Ungartor are the most convenient.

The Castle of Hainburg an der Donau
Emperor Henry III ordered a castle to be built at Hainburg in 1050. The old settlement of Hainburg, which grew at the foot of the castle, received its town charter in 1244. In the castle chapel in 1252 the Bohemian King Przemsyl Ottokar married the Duchess Margarethe of Austria. The castle was destroyed in the late 17th century when Hainburg was overrun by the Turks. Renovation and preservation of the ruins began in 1975 and nowadays the castle is used for outdoor theatrical events. There is good access to the ruins from the centre of the town.

Die Tour beginnt beim Bahnhof in Hainburg an der Donau.
Hainburg ist die östlichste Stadt Österreichs an der Grenze zur Slowakei und liegt an der Donau. Zunächst geht es hinauf auf den Braunsberg, dann weiter zur Ruine Röthelstein und über den Golfclub wieder zurück zur Stadt. Der zweite Abschnitt folgt hinauf zur Hundsheimer Hütte auf den Hexenberg und wieder zurück nach Hainburg durch die Altstadt bis zum Bahnhof.

HAINBURG an der DONAU / SCHLOSSBERG CASTLE / CASTLES in OLD EUROPE / REPUBLIC of AUSTRIA ......Zakonzervované ruiny hradu sa nachádzajú na výbežku vrchu nad starým a na opačnej strane novým mestom . Mesto leží pri Dunaji medzi Bratislavou a Viedňou v dolnom Rakúsku v priemyselnej oblasti . Mesto zo svojimi 2,5 km dlhými hradbami , tromi bránami a 15 vežami z 13 storočia vo výbornom stave je Európskou unikátnou raritou . Počiatky osídlenia siahajú do Halštatského obdobia . V roku 1050 cisár Henrich tretí začal výstavbu hradu . Výstavba pokračovala podľa biskupa z Regensburgu , neskôr riadil výstavbu vojvoda Conrát z Bavorska a margróf Vojtech Víťazný . V roku 1108 patril hrad rodu Babenbergerov . V rokoch 1220 - 1225 boli hradné opevnenia zosilené a rozšírené . Spodná časť bola postavená v prvej polovici 13 storočia a hornú časť 1267 - 1268 Přemyslom Otakarom II z Čiech . Dňa 11.2.1252 si Margróf Moravy , neskôr Český kráľ Premysl Otakar II , zobral za manželku Margaretu fon Babenberkovú , sestru vojvodu Fridricha II . V 1278 roku Premislovec prehral bitku o Durnkrut a hrad získali Habsburgovci . Hrad bol v prenájme rôznych pánov .Mesto a hrad začali upadať , stratili na význame . V roku 1629 sa stal hrad majetkom mesta . V roku 1683 počas druhého osmanského ťaženia , Turci hravo dobili mesto . Obyvateľstvo sa snažilo utiecť k Dunaju a tlačilo sa v úzkych uličkách pred úzkou bránou a tam Turci pobili viac ako 8000 ľudí . Turci obsadili mesto aj hrad a zničili opevnenia . V roku 1709 gróf Lowenberg dal opraviť kaplnku . Jozef II zriadil v meste tabakovú továreň . V 19 storočí na hrade sídlila vojenská posádka ...Hrad sa už neopravoval .Dnes je to zakonzervovaná zrúcanina . Súži pre vyhliadku do ďalekého okolia ...Príďte sa pozrieť .
