End of the Line 10 Shanghai – A Journey Past Some of Shanghai’s Unique Historical Architecture

Did you ever look at a map and wonder where these places are and what’s out there? Well I’m travelling to the end of every metro line in Shanghai to find out, and along the way I’m searching for the interesting, the extraordinary and the unusual. So join me as we go to the End of the Line!

Yes, this series is finally back! On this long awaited episode we visit a few of Shanghai’s more interesting and historic pieces of architecture along Line 10. We start off in the west of Shanghai at the enormous Hongqiao Railway Station before doubling back along the short Line 10 branch and heading into central Shanghai, stopping off at a few interesting buildings along the way. Finally we head through to Line 10’s new extension finishing in Pudong’s north.

Duolun Road was originally named Darroch Road since its completion. It was named after John Darroch, a British missionary who was awarded the title of Jinshi by Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty and the head of the London Missionary Society. Duolun Road is famous for the former residences of many modern celebrities. At the end of the 20th century, Duolun Road was built as a leisure and cultural celebrity street.
Most of the buildings on Duolun Road were villas built after the development of early Chinese national capitalists. During the Anti-Japanese War, they belonged to the Japanese and officials of the Wang Jingwei regime, and protected the area for the Japanese naval invasion of China. The former residence of Liang Hongzhi at 215 Duolun Road; these residences were occupied by government officials as enemy property after the Anti-Japanese War. Among them are the Kong Xiangxi Mansion, one of the four major families in the Kuomintang era, with an Islamic style, and the Bai Chongxi Mansion at 210 Duolun Road where Bai Chongxi once lived after the Anti-Japanese War. Taiwanese writer Bai Xianyong also lived here briefly when he was a child. The Neoclassical French villa Tang Enbo's residence was once the residence of Tang Enbo and Chen Yi. The garden house at No. 93 on Duolun Road was requisitioned by the Shanghai Military Control Commission as the residence of Wang Zaoshi in 1950. Duolun Road also has the only existing Christian church Hongdetang in Shanghai that combines Chinese and Western styles, the Nanyang Gallery-style student dormitory of China University of Art, the typical Shikumen Lane Jingyunli, Yonganli, etc., which are the old-style lanes and lanes on the sea. The epitome of Shanghai architecture.
In the 1920s and 1930s, Duolun Road was the most active area of Chinese left-wing intellectuals represented by Lu Xun. In 1930, the Chinese Left-wing Writers Union was established at China Art University at 233 Dou Lean Road. Intellectuals such as Lu Xun, Guo Moruo, Mao Dun, Ye Shengtao, and Wang Zaoshi once lived in Duolun Road and nearby Jingyunli. A large number of left-wing writers such as Ding Ling, Sha Ting, and Qu Qiubai also lived and wrote in the Hongkou area near Duolun Road. On October 1, 1943, Wang Jingwei's government changed its current name to Duolun County in Chahar Province. At the beginning of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, social groups and organizations such as the Sun Club, the Christian Church, the Shanghai Art Theatre, China University of the Arts, the Chinese Left-wing Writers' League, the New China Theatre Club, and the Free Press appeared on Duolun Road.
At the beginning of 1999, the first phase of the reconstruction of Duolun Road was launched, and the Duolun Road Cultural Celebrity Street was built that integrates tourism and cultural relic protection. On October 22, 1999, the Hongkou District Government held the completion of the first phase of the project and the unveiling ceremony of the street signs of Duolun Road Cultural Celebrity Street. Along the street, a collection of cultural relics and former residences of celebrities have been opened. An 18-meter-high Xishi Bell Tower was built at the corner of the L line of Duolun Road, and the Duolun Modern Art Museum, the first official contemporary art museum in China, was opened. At present, the second phase of the reconstruction of Duolun Road, which involves the back row of Duolun Road, has been planned and is under construction. At that time, Duolun Road Cultural Celebrity Street will extend to Hailun West Road and Baoshan Road, becoming an X-shaped cultural street.

20世紀二三十年代，多倫路是以魯迅為代表的中國左翼知識分子最活躍的地區。1930年中國左翼作家聯盟在竇樂安路233號中華藝術大學成立。魯迅、郭沫若、茅盾、葉聖陶、王造時等知識分子曾經居住在多倫路和附近的景雲里。丁玲、沙汀、瞿秋白等一大批左翼作家也一度在多倫路附近的虹口地區居住和創作。 1943年10月1日，汪精衛政府以察哈爾省多倫縣改為今名。到中華人民共和國建立之初，多倫路先後出現太陽社、基督教會、上海藝術劇社、中華藝術大學、中國左翼作家聯盟、新中國劇社、自由出版社等社會團體與組織。
1999年初，多倫路改造一期工程啟動，建設集旅遊和文物保護為一體的「多倫路文化名人街」。1999年10月22日，虹口區政府舉行一期工程竣工暨多倫路文化名人街街牌揭幕儀式。沿街開闢了文物收藏館和名人故居，在多倫路L行拐角點建造了高18米的標誌性建築夕拾鐘樓，並開設了中國第一家官方的當代藝術館多倫現代美術館。目前涉及多倫路後排建築的多倫路改造二期工程已完成規劃，正在建設中。屆時多倫路文化名人街將延伸至海倫西路和寶山路，成為X字型文化街區。

The Shanghai New World Daimaru shopping mall is very posh and massive. I have never seen any mall as grand and amazing as this one in my life. The architecture in China is world class, the best!!!

I took the subway right below to the station Nanjing West station. I walked 1.2 km from here towards Masala Art Indian cuisine restaurant. It has the best Indian food. I highly recommend it. The walk towards it is worth taking. Behind it is the famous Fuxing Park.

The people in China were very nice to me. I always found someone to help me when I needed an English translator, or directions, or more information about any place. Some people I met were very fond of foreigners. Great hospitality!!! I had a fabulous experience visiting Shanghai. The food from different parts of the world is found here. I really enjoyed eating the Indian and Chinese food during my visit.
