Located about 23 km from the town of Sirsi,(Sirsi tourist places) Banavasi is the oldest town in Karnataka and one of the oldest places in India. Surrounded by forests with river Varada flowing around it, Banvasi has lush green fields of rice, sugarcane and pineapple. The town is famous for the ancient Madhukeshwara Temple that dates back to the 9th century. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple, according to history was built by Mayura Sharma of the Kadamba dynasty. The Kadambas were the oldest rulers of Karnataka and they reigned till the Chalukyas came to power. The Madhukeshwara Temple as it stands today is the result of a number of modifications that have taken place during the times of succeeding dynasties like the Chalukyas and Hoysalas.

The main deity Lord Shiva is simple and in the form of a honey coloured Shiva Linga and hence derives the name ‘Madhukeshwara’. The Sankalpa mandapa and Nritya mandapa have some beautiful carvings that are noteworthy and representative of the Chalukyan and Hoysala architecture styles.

Overview of the Madhukeshwara Temple
The Madhukeshwara temple gets its name from the honey-hued Shiva Lingam inside the sanctum. The temple dates back to the 9th century and hence is one of Karnataka’s oldest temples. It was commissioned by Mayura Sharma from the Kadamba dynasty.

This was the first royal dynasty of Karnataka. After the Kadamba reign was the Chalukya era and the Hoysala period. Additions and renovations were made to the temple by rulers from both periods. Thus, in a way the temple showcases how architectural styles in Karnataka have changed over the years.

The architecture of the Madhukeshwara Temple
A pair of stone elephants greets visitors to the temple. The main shrine of this temple or the Garba Mandapa has a very simple structure. It has minimal ornamentation in terms of carvings on pillars and walls. A honey-colored Shiva Linga is placed in this shrine. Under the reign of the Chalukya dynasty, a Sankalpa mandapa was added on to the temple.

The construction of the Nritya mandapa is attributed to the Hoysala rulers. The Nritya Mandapa is a sharp contrast to the Garba Mandapa in terms of ornamentation. This ceiling, walls and pillars of this mandapa are exquisitely carved. The pillars bear the Hoysala trademark of reflective convex and concave carvings one below the other. This goes to prove the expertise of the stone carvers of that time.

The temple also has 8 separate shrines for the Ashtathik Balahas, their consorts and vahanas. It is probably the only temple where this is seen.

Highlights of the Madhukeshwara Temple
Inside the Nritya Mandapa is a 7-foot tall monolithic statue of the Nandi Bull. This is positioned in such a way that the left eye seems to be looking at Lord Shiva and the right eye is directed towards Parvati. What is interesting to note is that the line of sight has been created in such a way that the pillars do not intersect it.

One of the highlights of this temple is an intricately carved stone cot and a triloka mandapa. This was made by the Sonde rulers. The cot sits in a separate mandapa within the praharam. This is not made with soft stone but with granite which is much harder to carve.

Another unique attraction of this temple is a vertically sliced Ganesha idol. It is believed that the other half of this stone idol is in Varanasi.

Banavasi Madhukeshwara Temple ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಮಧುಕೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯ ಬನವಾಸಿ Popular Temple from Kadamba dynasty

The Kadambas (345–540 CE) were an ancient royal family of Karnataka, India, that ruled northern Karnataka and the Konkan from Banavasi in present-day Uttara Kannada district. The kingdom was founded by Mayurasharma in c. 345, and at later times showed the potential of developing into imperial proportions. An indication of their imperial ambitions is provided by the titles and epithets assumed by its rulers, and the marital relations they kept with other kingdoms and empires, such as the Vakatakas and Guptas of northern India. Mayurasharma defeated the armies of the Pallavas of Kanchi possibly with the help of some native tribes and claimed sovereignty. The Kadamba power reached its peak during the rule of Kakusthavarma.

Nagareshvara Temple, Bankapura

Nagareshwara Temple located in Bankapur village is in Haveri District of Karnataka. The Bankapur village falls between Hubli and Haveri. The temple is set in verdant surroundings, a part of the Peacock Sanctuary with the ramparts of the fort adjoining it. One look at the temple reminds a traveler of all the Western Chalukyan temple structures around Karnataka. With intricately carved doorways and pillars, the temple consists of Mukhamanatapa, Navaranga, Antarala and Garbhagruha. Nagareshwara Temple is also known as ‘Aruvattu Kambagada Gudi’ (Sixty Pillars Temple) after the sixty beautiful Chalukyan style pillars in the Mukhamantapa. It can be approached from three sides and visitors can see miniature Gopuras and delicately carved miniature sculptures all along the outer wall of the Mukhamantapa. The door of the Navaranga has beautifully carved five-band decorations with attractive Gajalakshmi motifs on the lintel. There were two entrances from the Navaranga of which only one remains. The left one was damaged due to the ravages on the temple structure by Muslim invaders.
Nagareshwara Temple was built in the Jakkanachari style during the Chalukyan Era (11th century). It is one of the beautiful temples of Karnataka. This temple was excavated by the ASI (Archaeological Survey of India) and found to be underground; its gopuram is not visible to us anymore. The gopuram was covered with soil with the intention of protecting the temple from invaders.
The exterior of Nagareshwara Temple is carved beautifully with a richly decorated entrance and 66 pillars shaped and polished to perfection. Motifs of animals and birds adorn the pillars. Well looked after, the temple, when visited, resounds with the calls of birds, especially the peacocks from the adjacent Peacock Sanctuary.

Tharakeshwara Temple, Hanagal

he Tarakeshwara or Tarakeshvara Temple is a Hindu temple complex dedicated to Shiva as Tarakeswara located in Hangal, Karnataka, in India. It also houses a temple to Shiva's vahana, Nandi, and his son Ganesha. The complex is a listed monument of the Archaeological Survey of India. It also has three memorial stones which are sculpted with religious and military scenes and inscribed with text in the Kannada language. Its octagonal hall has a 6-metre (20 ft) diameter lotus carving as its ceiling.
The Chalukyas of Kalyana reigned in the Deccan from the 10th to the 12th century. They built Hindu temples in Ittagi, Gadag and Lakkundi as well as in Hangal. The Tarakeshwara Temple was also built by them c. ad 1050 or the mid-12th century.

The Tarakeshwara temple is a listed monument of the Archaeological Survey of India.
The temple is built with grey-green chloritic schist in the Hoysala style. More specifically, it is said to be one of the best edifices erected in the Kalyana Chalukyan style influenced by Hoysala architecture.

Opposite the idol, there is an octagonal structure known as the lotus of Hangal. The elaborately-carved structure is 9 metres (30 ft) in diameter. A huge stone, 6 metres (20 ft) in diameter, forms the ceiling of this structure. The stone, cut into the shape of a lotus, is supported by eight pillars. Next to each of the eight pillars, there are sculpted stone pillars which mark the Guardians of the Directions (ashtadikpalaka).

Near the main temple, there is a hall supported by 12 pillars worshipping Nandi, the bull ridden by Shiva. It and an adjacent hall are provided with an inclined balcony for sitting. The columns are made in a lathe-turned octagonal polished form and carved with geometric designs. The two halls are topped by stepped-pyramid roofs. The exterior walls are profusely ornamented with sculptures of miniature temples and other images.

The Ganesha temple is located northeast of the main temple and oriented to the south. The temple has a stepped plan with a sanctum preceded by a square-shaped open hall. Done in the Nagara style,[9] The tower (shikhara) is made of several miniature towers in north Indian style. The hall has a parapet with many carvings.
