The Gothenburg archipelago consists of over 30 beautiful islands, easily accessible by car or public transport. The archipelago is split into north and south and both with equally stunning and cosy big, or small, islands to explore.
Hönö island lies in the northern archipelago, with Hönö Klåva harbour acting as the island’s main hub. You can get your bearings and a bird’s eye view of Hönö and neighboring islands from Hönö Vattentorn, a water tower and observation deck on Utsiktsvägen, a 10-minute walk north of Hönö Klåva. Or you can simply chill out on Jungfruviken beach, a 25-minute walk from Hönö Klåva and the perfect place for a dip and a picnic.

Bus & Ferry to Hönö Island | Gothenburg Northern Archipelago (Göteborgs Skärdgård), West Sweden
Taking a bus and ferry ride from Gothenburg (Göteborg) to the Hönö island in the Gothenburg Archipelago (Göterborgs skärdgård) in December.
First I took the Röd (Red) express bus from Stenpiren to the Lilla Varholmen ferry terminal on Hisingen. The bus crossed the majestic Älvsborg bridge (Älvsborgsbron) over the Göta älv river. From Lilla Varholmen my trip continued by the ferry to Hönö Färjeläge (Hönö terminal). The bus ride is about 30 minutes and the ferry takes about 12 minutes. The ferry is free of charge. With bus number 1 or 2 from Hönö terminal you can reach the islands Öckerö, Hälsö, Hönö and Fotö.
The Älvsborg Bridge (Älvsborgsbron) connects the mainland with the island of Hisingen, the fourth largest island of Sweden. The bridge opened in 1966. The total length of the suspension bridge is 933 meters and the longest span between the pylons is 417 meters. The clearance below the deck is 45 meters . Pylons are 107 meters tall, making the bridge one of Gothenburg's most prominent landmarks. Älvsborgsbron takes its name from the mediaeval castle of Old Älvsborg, the ruins of which are located just a couple of hundred meters along the riverbank from the southern pylon.
The idyllic Hönö island is one of the largest islands in the Gothenburg Archipelago (Göterborgs skärdgård). The popular area around the harbour on Hönö is called Klåva, and is the central hub on the island.
The Gothenburg archipelago is divided into a southern and a northern part. The southern islands are car free. You can get to the northern archipelago by car.
The best way to plan your trip and buy ticket from Gothenburg to Hönö is to use the Västtrafik travel planner or use mobile application Västrafik To Go.

When you travel to Gothenburg for several days and don't sure what to see there, you definitely have to visit several islands from The Gothenburg archipelago. These Sweden islands just in 1h from the city center. You can get there easily by tram + ferry. During our stay we traveled to Brännö islands by ferry and then went by foot to the Galterö islands. It's unforgettable experience! It's like being on a different planet! :)
