The most recognized landmark in Hämeenlinna is the 13th century Häme Castle. In the past it used to serve as a military fortress, home for Swedish nobility and as a prison. It was the first prison in Finland with cells. Today the castle is a museum and hosts the yearly Medieval festival of Hämeenlinna which is the biggest medieval themed event in Finland visited by 25,000 people every year.
A must-visit place for those interested in war history is Museo Militaria. The exhibition portrays the history of Finnish artillery, engineering and signaling from the middle ages to the present day. The outdoor exhibition area features cannons from the 1870s to the 1980s.
Another worth-while attraction is the Hämeenlinna Church completed in 1798. It was inspired by the Pantheon in Rome and the altar painting depicts the Savior’s appearance to Mary Magdalene.

Things to see in Hämeenlinna, Finland
My day trip from Helsinki to Hämeenlinna. Walked in my favorite part of the city: Aulanko, discovered the granite castle, the climbing park, the Aulanko lake with it's walking trails and a beach, the watching tower and a cafe nearby and also some hidden cool spots on the way through the forest. We finished the day in Häme castle, which is the symbol of the city. Unfortunately, the museum part was already closed by then. If you are also arriving by car, here is one good tip on where to eat on a budget on your way. Cheers!

Hey guys, welcome to traveling insider, today we’ll look at the top 10 best places to visit in Finland.
From the vibrant art-filled cities of Helsinki and Turku to the depths of the boreal forests and the thinly inhabited outer archipelago, Finland remains a relatively unknown corner of Europe. This is likely because it is so far from the mainstream tourist routes, but the country's many cultural and historical attractions add to the unspoiled natural surroundings to make it an ideal destination. Its lakes fall, rivers and vast wilderness areas, along with the certainty of snow in the winter make it a Nordic playground for both winter and summer activities.
Helsinki is the main point of entry for most visitors to Finland. The busy Baltic port is where you'll find the most important museums, as well as architecture by some of the greatest Finnish architects, especially Eliel Saarinen, who designed Helsinki's Railway Station, a landmark of early modern architecture.
Within easy reach of Helsinki are the charming smaller cities of Turku and Porvoo. But it would be a shame to confine a trip only to the Baltic coast when so much beautiful open countryside beckons. To the west lie the Finnish lakes, and in the north is the vast area beyond the Arctic Circle, home of the midnight sun, northern lights, and some of Europe's best winter sports.

HAMEENLINNA, FINLAND: Exploring one of Finland’s oldest cities & walking around the beautiful lakes & castles situated on the edge of Europe’s largest lake district - Finnish Lakeland.

Visiting Hameenlinna is a straightforward and relatively cheap train ride from either Helsinki or Tampere. I came from the latter with plans to see as much as I could in one well executed day trip. My aim was to spend most of the day in the city and then perhaps a few hours down by the lakes and forests of Aulanko Nature Reserve - enjoying the tranquillity that the great outdoors can bring.
After arriving at one of Finland’s oldest railway stations I headed down to the lake and picked up a well maintained trail that led me through the trees, across the wetland and past several abandoned buildings. There were some wonderful view points as I followed the lakes shoreline, several looking out across to the brick built Hameenlinna Castle and others equipped with tables and seating to just watch the vast waterline of the lake. There were plenty of birds chirping and leaves falling - even an express train or two passing.
After an hour or so I arrived at a magnificent granite castle that served as the entrance to the Aulanko Nature Reserve & Historical Site. The sign listed more castles, swan lakes, hiking trails, bird watching areas, play zones, caves and swimming places so I headed inside. I weaved across a few trails until I got lost in the woods, and just when I was about to re-examine the map I stumbled upon a spectacular lookout tower and viewpoint looking out over the lakes and forest below. It has to be seen to be believed! I was really enjoying my trip to Hameenlinna.
Having spent a few more hours than I planned at Aulanko I walked back towards the city, this time I crossed a fairly modern-looking railway bridge and followed a trail on the other side of the lake back to Häme Castle. I spent an hour exploring the brick structure and learning about its history before continuing on towards the city centre of Hameenlinna.
There I enjoyed walking by a number of old wooden houses and a much more contemporary church (Hämeenlinnan kirkko) that dominated the main square. I also caught up with the statue of Finnish composer Jean Sibelius and gazed upon his childhood home that still stands in the heart of the city.
