Could you imagine living without running water, electricity, plumbing or refrigeration? I have taken my camera behind the compound walls to explore living arrangements in contemporary Gunjur, a small coastal village of about 17,000 people in the south-western part of the Gambia near the Atlantic Ocean. Their compounds house extended families who manage through the needs of everyday life.
As with many countries that are less advanced, in The Gambia, the sense of time is lost. For those living in Gunjur every single day involves what we might consider mind-numbing and backbreaking work like fetching water or handwashing clothes, etc. Almost all of the work within each compound is assigned to women; the men on the other hand men are out looking for work and based on what I've seen there is little work to be found. This is their culture and at times it might be difficult for us to reconcile the contradiction of living as a part of a community and surviving as a community.
There are only a few lodges in the area that are solar-powered and have their own uncontaminated water supply. For more information please contact The Gunjur Project on ????

Day started amazing in Karamaluu garden lodge in Gambia, Gunjur.
Freshly made breakfast, with coffee and good vibes. Good atmosphere. Bajo was an amazing host, and we really got lucky by finding this place in the late night before after disaster Sunflower Lodge.
We continued our adventure towards east in Gambia with extremely getting hotter up to 38 degrees and reaching Soma where we had struggles finding a decent place where to stay over night.
Couple times we dropped the bike in the dark muddy places , broke the mirror.
Completely exhausted in the night and just wanted to sleep to continue east tomorrow
