Trinidad, Cuba
One of the true gems of Cuba and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Trinidad located on the Caribbean coast is probably one of the oldest cities in the Caribbean founded on in 1514.
Cobbledstoned streets surrounded by houses in vivid color leads up to Plaza Mayor in middle of town. On one side of the square you’ll find Iglesia Parroquial de la Santísima Trinidad. The horse carriages and vintage American cars will pass you by when walking on the streets.
The yellow clock tower, The Convento de San Francisco de Asís, can be seen all over town. From its top you get a great view of the surrounding Escambray Mountain and the Caribbean Ocean where the Playa Ancón is a closeby beach.
In the evenings the sound of live latin music can be heard from most places.

Nel gennaio 2016 abbiamo ripercorso tra i boschi, sui saliscendi del Sentiero de la Plata, sulla Sierra Maestra, tra monti di un verde brillante e rigoglioso, i sentieri dove Fidel Castro e Che Guevara per due anni diressero la guerriglia contro le forze di Fulgencio Batista. Su queste alture, nascosto fra la fitta vegetazione, era situato il quartier generale dei barbudos, i rivoluzionari di Fidel e del Che.
Nelle prime ore del mattino siamo arrivati con il nostro bus all’appuntamento con le auto che ci hanno trasportato prima al Centro Visite di Villa Santo Domingo e all’ingresso del Parque Nacional Turquino dove ci attendeva la guida ed in seguito all’Alto de Naranjo, punto di inizio della camminata.
Nel primo tratto del tracciato troviamo i cartelli che indicano due percorsi: il primo, a sinistra, porta al Pico Turquino, la montagna più alta dell’isola con i suoi 1974 metri, che è meta di molti appassionati escursionisti che dalla cima godranno di un panorama memorabile sul mar dei Caraibi, il secondo, sulla destra, ci ha portato alla Comandancia de Fidel nel cuore della Sierra.
Camminando per sentieri a volte impervi ci siamo imbattuti in piante ad alto fusto, piante di caffè, palme, una flora locale che è di tipo tropicale e la guida oltre agli aspetti storici ci ha illustrato anche quelli naturalistici della Sierra Maestra.
La Comandancia è rimasta praticamente come allora, con 16 semplici edifici di legno costruiti senza previa livellazione del terreno e senza l’abbattimento degli alberi per evitarne la localizzazione aerea. Nel tragitto tra la Posta n. 1 e gli altri edifici una tomba ci fa riflettere e ricordare coloro che sono stati disposti a morire per i propri ideali.
La visita alla Comandancia ci ha permesso di vedere le capanne dove il medico-comandante Ernesto Guevara de la Serna visitava i feriti, la Casa de la Prensa, dove venivano accolti i visitatori e teatro delle interviste con i giornalisti che si arrampicavano sulla Sierra, e dare un’occhiata al picco che ospitava la stazione di Radio Rebelde.
Nella capanna comando di Fidel Castro, dove il Lider Maximo ha reso concreto il sogno di indipendenza dall’oppressore, ci sono ancora il letto, le librerie di legno e il frigo a cherosene con il buco di una pallottola su un fianco. Qui si firmò la Prima Legge di Riforma Agraria, il 17 maggio 1959 e si concessero i primi titoli di proprietà nell’area attorno la catena montuosa agli agricoltori. Da questo edificio pare partissero sette vie di fuga preparate in caso di attacco nemico.
Il tracciato tra vegetazione rigogliosa e piante dalle quali pendono filamenti secchi chiamati “barba de Fidel” è di circa 3 km su sentieri in altura. Non ci sono particolari difficoltà, ma le piogge sono frequenti e il terreno potrebbe essere in certi punti fangoso, sono quindi consigliabili scarpe con una buona suola che permetta di non scivolare.
La sensazione di camminare attraverso la storia si sente realmente, ed è davvero suggestiva.
La Sierra Maestra è la più lunga e la più alta catena montuosa di Cuba, è situata nella costa sud-orientale del paese e si estende per oltre 250 km. Si trova qui la Comandancia de la Plata, un luogo storico molto importante, giustamente considerato la culla della rivoluzione. Qui iniziò e qui si presero le decisioni più importanti della Rivoluzione di Cuba. E’ stata dichiarata monumento nazionale nel 1978 dalla Commissione Nazionale di Monumenti.
Camminare tra i sentieri della Sierra Maestra, pensando ai personaggi ed agli avvenimenti che hanno segnato un’epoca e che sono partiti proprio da queste alture rende il trek alla Comandancia de la Plata un’esperienza emozionante. Questo trek permette letteralmente di camminare sulle orme della Revolucion Cubana, in un’area di straordinaria bellezza, di foresta rigogliosa, così densa che si possono vedere montagne ricoperte di verde per chilometri.
Fidel Castro, Che Guevara e altri ottanta uomini , sbarcarono dallo yacht Granma, che ha dato nome alla provincia, nei pressi della Playa Las Coloradas in una zona fitta di mangrovie. A dir la verità si narra che il Che, considerato il rovesciamento della barca, abbia detto che più di uno sbarco si trattò di un naufragio… Dopo un anno sempre in fuga sulla Sierra Maestra, nel 1958 Fidel scelse il posto del suo quartier generale alla Comandancia per la sua inaccessibilità. Situato in cima ad un crinale ammantato da una fitta foresta, ben camuffato e isolato, e situato in posizione strategica in quanto per arrivarci bisognava attraversare uno spazio aperto e quindi arrampicarsi attraverso una macchia fitta, è servito al suo scopo poiché i soldati di Batista non riuscirono mai a trovarlo.
Il trek alla Comandancia de La Plata è stato fatto nel corso del viaggio CUBA BREVE effettuato con Avventure nel Mondo nel gennaio 2016.
LA CIUDAD MÁS PINTORESCA DE CUBA: TRINIDAD
Entre las muchas ciudades que Cuba tiene para descubrir, sin lugar a dudas Trinidad es la más buscada por los visitantes. Y hay una razón para ello, y es que su casco histórico es Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad por la UNESCO desde el año 1988 gracias a lo bien conservado. Este viaje es por la ciudad más pintoresca de Cuba, es hora de conocer Trinidad.
